Estates Strategy

October 12th, 2016

The University has been recognised for the quality of its estate overall, its buildings and its commitment to sustainability – attracting a number of prestigious awards and accolades over the period 2010-2015.

We know the architecture, landscape and facilities we provide are important to students and staff – it’s part of our wider offer that attracts and retains the very best people here at The University of Nottingham and in 2015, it was placed 1st in the University of Indonesia’s Global Green Metric as the most sustainable university in the world for the fourth year since 2010.

Our refreshed strategy aims to provide a long term development and management plan for the estate (both UK and international campuses) which underpins the University’s Global Strategy 2020. It outlines aims, objectives and performance assessment for the Estates Office in the next ten years, whilst building flexibility and agility to enable The University to respond effectively in a fast changing higher education environment.

Delivering a coherent estate strategy means listening to the needs of our customers to achieve the University’s objectives. We work closely with each of the five faculties to develop and deliver investment that meets their needs in terms of teaching and research. We also work collaboratively with key services to ensure the supporting infrastructure for study-space, accommodation, libraries, sport and catering are met.

Over the next five to ten year period, the estate will continue to remodel its teaching and learning spaces and to provide the right facilities for world class research. Alongside this, we will continue to further enhance Nottingham’s unparalleled parkland campuses; provide sector leading Library and social learning spaces; Acquire land to support further development and consolidation of our campuses; refresh our long-term (10 years +) master plans for all our campuses.

Alongside the most recent developments, such as the Carbon Neutral Laboratory and the David Ross Sports Village, over the period up to 2020 we will deliver the following projects with agility to respond to new opportunities:

  • Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre extension
  • Teaching Building
  • Centre for Biomolecular Sciences Phase 3 and 4
  • New Health Centre
  • Portland Building Remodelling
  • Campus-wide Arboretum
  • Ingenuity Centre
  • Advanced Manufacturing Building
  • G-ERA Building
  • National Centre for Dairy Research
  • North Laboratory Re-modelling

Funding support for EU students

October 11th, 2016

European Union students applying for university places in the 2017 to 2018 academic year will still have access to student funding support.

The government has today (Tuesday 11 October) announced that EU students applying for a place at an English university or further education institution in the 2017 to 2018 academic year will continue to be eligible for student loans and grants – and will be for the duration of their course.

The decision will mean that students applying to study from 2017 to 2018 will not only be eligible for the same funding and support as they are now, but that their eligibility will continue throughout their course, even if the UK exits the European Union during that period.

This announcement follows assurances given by the Government in June shortly after the EU Referendum result. This included immediate guarantees that students currently in higher or further education, and those applying for a place this year (2016 to 2017) would continue to be able to access student funding support – including loans and grants – under the current eligibility criteria.

Under current student finance rules, EU students are eligible to receive undergraduate tuition fee loans if they have resided in the European Economic Area for at least three years prior to study. EU nationals who have resided in the UK for over five years, are also able to apply for undergraduate maintenance support and master’s loans. Similarly, under EU law, EU students are also eligible for home fee status – which means they are charged the same tuition fees as UK students. Other, non-EU, international students do not have their tuition fees capped in this way.

Today’s confirmation will mean that for EU nationals, or their family members, who are applying for a place at university from August 2017 to study a course that attracts student support, the current funding rules will remain unchanged. All applicants will be eligible for student loans and/or grants under the current terms and, if deemed eligible, will be able to receive those for the duration of their course.

For more information, read the Government’s press release. You can also read a response to the announcement from Universities UK.

Dylan Hartley suprises UoN students at rugby tournament

October 11th, 2016

England Rugby Union captain Dylan Hartley made a guest appearance at the 02 Touch Tour event last week on campus, even surprising our first XV BUCS Rugby squad with a post-match team talk.

Held at the Highfields playing fields on Wednesday 5 October, the O2 Touch Tour hosted over 150 University of Nottingham students who part in the fun touch rugby tournament or tried a new sport on one of the ‘turn up and play’ pitches.

The 02 Touch Tour aims to promote the benefits from taking part in social mixed touch rugby and, as well as this week in Nottingham, have taken the tour to Gatehead and Oxford. Joining Dylan in Nottingham were Rochelle ‘Rocky’ Clarke MBE, Women’s Rugby World Cup winner and soon to be England’s most capped player.

After the tournament kicked off, Dylan Hartley took to the stage for a Q&A session with students, talking about his experiences in the England squad, his dedication to keeping in shape and calming of that notorious temper – before making his way onto the pitch for a friendly run around with two of the teams.

Dylan even headed over to the first team pitch at Highfields, where our top squad were in the final moments of their triumphant win over University of Birmingham. It certainly was a surprise to the players when he joined in with their post-match huddle!

Sam Bell-Minogue, Assistant Director of Sport, commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Dylan and the O2 Touch Tour to the University of Nottingham – it was a fantastic experience for our students and really positive to see so many try out Rugby for the first time.”

“We have partnered with the RFU and O2 Touch for several years now and they are incredibly supportive of our student rugby programme. As well as elite performance training for our top squads, we also offer social rugby through our O2 Touch ambassadors and the popular Engage programme. We hope meeting Dylan today will inspire students to carry on with their rugby; it’s a great way to keep fit with your friends.”

For more information about the Engage programme, including Touch Rugby, visit the UoN Sport website. Take a look at pictures from the day in the gallery below.

Nottingham in Parliament Day 2016 – programme now live

October 7th, 2016

With over 45 events developed in collaboration with well-over 100 partners, the Nottingham in Parliament Day 2016 programme is now live, with all events confirmed and ready to book online on the Nottingham in Parliament Day website.

Led by The University of Nottingham, Nottingham in Parliament Day is nothing short of a full take-over of Westminster all taking place on Tuesday 25 October. Highlights of the day include:

  • academics from The University of Nottingham pitched against members of the House of Commons in an episode of University Challenge
  • members of the GB archery team giving Robin Hood target practice
  • Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff conducting live chemistry experiments with Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation

Over University 70 academics and researchers are involved in the day – with over 40 parliamentarians helping us book rooms across Westminster. There are approximately 15 other University of Nottingham-policymaker meetings taking place on the day (that we know about) that aren’t on the programme, so it’s not just about holding events.

How to sign up for events?

Each event is being run by a different coalition of partners from across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, and as with all events held in Parliament, you will need to register for each event individually in order to receive a formal invitation. To sign up to events, please explore the programme and then get in touch with the relevant organisers using the contact information provided on the relevant event pages (either an email address or event registration link). Some events are invite-only and aren’t open to general interest.

Why has the University led this initiative?

The event has been developed by the Political and Public Affairs Unit in External Relations with three primary aims. Firstly, to support increased researcher engagement with policymakers and the development of pathways to impact. Secondly, to raise awareness and improve the perception of the University amongst MPs and other policymakers. Thirdly, to use the sense of collective endeavour and collaboration to support the development of partnerships amongst the local, regional and national stakeholders working with us on the programme.

Meningitis alert

October 6th, 2016

The following advice is issued as a result of a confirmed case of meningitis in one of our halls of residence.

The meningococcal bacteria live in the nose and throat and is only passed on by prolonged intimate contact. The University has worked with local Public Health Doctors and has already identified and is tracing very close contacts (e.g. fellow teammates and hall residents who have shared a room or kitchen with the affected person) who have been given prophylactic antibiotics. Anyone with more casual contact should be at no greater risk of catching this disease than a member of the general public and does not require treatment.

Members of the University are advised to be especially vigilant over the next few days. The important thing to know is that the disease can develop very rapidly, sometimes within a matter of hours. Early symptoms may be similar to those you get with a flu or hangover:

  • feeling feverish
  • vomiting
  • severe headache
  • stiff neck, back and joint pains

If you feel unwell, and your fever or pain symptoms are not relieved by paracetamol or aspirin, you must consult a doctor. Let a friend know you are unwell and ask them to visit you regularly.

IF ANY OF THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS DEVELOP, GET MEDICAL HELP URGENTLY BY PHONING 111 (FREE FROM ANY PHONE), AS EARLY TREATMENT SAVES LIVES:

  • rash of tiny red bruises that do not fade under pressure
  • severe dislike of light
  • disorientation or drowsiness

If you need further information or advice, contact your GP or phone 111 or access one of the following meningitis information websites:
