New one-way system goes live at Royal Derby Hospital

April 7th, 2017

A new one-way system on the loop road around the Royal Derby Hospital will go live on Monday 10 April.

Patients and visitors are being asked to take care this weekend as final preparations take place. Entrance B (first entrance off Uttoxeter Road for traffic coming from the city) will be closed to all traffic from 8.15pm on Saturday evening for the rest of the weekend. Traffic will be able to use the entrance off the roundabout as usual.

From 6am on Monday, the new one-way system on the hospital loop road will come into effect, taking traffic around the hospital. New traffic lights on Uttoxeter Road, located at the first entrance to the RDH site, will be switched on to help control the entry and exit of traffic from this entrance.

From Monday, visitors will notice several changes:
• Traffic entering the hospital site at Entrance B will be controlled by the new traffic lights and will flow onto the site across the front of car park 8 before travelling anti-clockwise. Traffic entering here will no longer be able to turn left.
• Traffic leaving the site at Entrance B will also be controlled by the new traffic lights and will leave in two lanes to join Uttoxeter Road
• Traffic entering at Entrance A will turn right to go anti-clockwise around the site. Traffic turning left will only be able to access short stay car park 8
• New entry points will also be opened for car parks 4 & 6

You can find a map showing the new one-way system on the Derby Hospitals website.

New Masters course in slavery and liberation

April 7th, 2017

We are now offering an exciting new MA in slavery and liberation. The course will be taught by world-leading academics and experts and will introduce students to slavery, liberation and human rights.

Professor Kevin Bales from the School of Politics and International Relations says: “We all want to end slavery and support freed slaves, but how do we do that? Sooner or later, everyone in the world of human rights and anti-slavery asks this question. This is the question whenever we face the tough challenges of liberation and reintegration, and this hunger for knowledge is not surprising, given that there has been no professional training and education programme for anti-slavery scholars, activists or workers – until now.

“This MA is designed to prepare students for both future study and to equip them with the skills needed by anti-slavery and anti-trafficking organisations. Its true aim is to answer the fundamental question of how we can work together to end slavery and how best to support freed slaves.”

This course will be available for the 2017/18 academic year.

Karnival Rag Raids to be discontinued

April 6th, 2017

Statement from the University of Nottingham Students’ Union Trustee Board.

Last year Karnival went through changes in response to The Charities Act and new fundraising legislation. Changes were made to the processes and safeguarding requirements to protect not only those who carry out fundraising activities, but those people Karnival come into contact with as part of those activities. Karnival being reinstated last year was on the condition that they followed safeguarding policies.

Following an investigation into Karnival Rag Raids the Students’ Union and the Karnival Executive Committee are taking action to resolve serious concerns over compliance with safeguarding and health and safety requirements associated with their activities, as required by The Charities Act. The investigation found that the systems put in place had not been followed, and safeguarding requirements, as set out for all student groups, were not fulfilled on numerous occasions.

With the breaches to the safeguarding and health and safety policies and the potential risks, the Chief Executive, supported by the Board of Trustees, has ceased Rag Raids.

Ismail Sadurdeen, Chair of Trustees and the Students’ Union President said:

“The safety of our students is paramount and in the event of something happening on any of our activities we need to be confident that we’ve followed all safeguarding checks.

The failures and learnings have been identified and the Karnival Executive Committee and the  Students’ Union Officers and staff are now working together to review and improve the training, support and the policies for all Karnival activity.”

The Karnival Executive Committee commented:

“While the news that RAG raids will cease comes as a huge disappointment to us all, we are now looking forward to the future and are working to improve and expand Karnival. We aim to develop a more sustainable model for our group that includes activities that can engage more students than ever.”

Karnival continues to make a huge contribution to many charities through its fundraising activities and to the local Nottingham community through its volunteering activities, as well as being a significant part of a great student experience for those who get involved. The Karnival Executive Committee thank the charities who they partner with and look forward to redeveloping and continuing the relationships. The volunteering activities that Karnival support and lead on, such as Kontact, will continue with the support of the Students’ Union Volunteer team.

New provisions for Disability Leave & Disability Related Sickness Absence

April 5th, 2017

Message from Jaspal Kaur, Director of Human Resources.

The University is committed to ensuring reasonable measures are taken to remove any identified disadvantage for disabled employees and to support and retain disabled employees in employment.

I am pleased to confirm the University will be making provision for Disability Leave and Disability Related Sickness Absence, which will be included within the University’s current Sickness Absence Management Policy. This will take effect from 1 April 2017.

Disability Leave

This is a new provision of leave, which enables a disabled person to be absent from work for ‘rehabilitation, assessment or treatment’ for a fixed period(s) of time known in advance. Colleagues intending to request Disability Leave should discuss this with their relevant manager and complete a Disability Leave form. Full details of this provision can be found in the revised Sickness Absence Management Policy.

Disability Related Sickness Absence

The University recognises that some disabled employees’ impairments may result in some sickness absence. The University will be recording any disability related sickness absence within HR systems via the sickness absence notification process. This will assist us in ensuring staff are not disadvantaged with respect to HR policies. Full information is contained within the updated Sickness Absence Management Policy, available on the HR web site.

I would also like to take this opportunity to advise you that employees can update their status by completing an Equality Data Monitoring form. This information will be treated and stored confidentiality as sensitive personal data.

If you have any queries, please contact Rebecca Dalton, HR Project Manager (tel ext: 68539) or the HR Employment Relations Team.

Module enrolment changes – new online form

April 5th, 2017

Message on behalf of Chris Hulse, Director of Student Services.

In early May 2017, we will be inviting returning students to make preliminary module choices for the 2017/18 academic year. A copy of the communication sent to students is available here.

This year we will be using a new online form which will be available from Monday 8 May until Friday 12 May 2017. All returning students will use the same online form. Students have been informed that we will contact them again in early May, before the online form opens, with a link and instructions. We will also provide more information about how to check which modules are available in 2017/18, and how to confirm the requirements of their programme of study.

The communications we send to students will be specific to their programme of study and will, where required, provide instructions about entering choices in preference order or choosing more than 120 credits (in case they have to be allocated an alternative choice). As ever we are advising students that submitting the form doesn’t guarantee a place as enrolment on any module is subject to timetabling and course requirements. The follow-up communication will also include information about how students will be able to see their choices via the module screen in Blue Castle once they have been checked and uploaded into Saturn.

On Monday 15 May 2017, we will begin the process of checking module choices, including allocations to capped modules. This process will be led by colleagues in Student Services but may need to involve module convenors in Schools and Faculties to, for example, confirm that students meet the pre-requisites to study on the module. Student Services colleagues will be in contact with module convenors as required. In the meantime if you have any questions please contact the programmes team in your location:

Student Services roadshows – find out the latest from Project Transform on the summer go lives

April 5th, 2017

A series of roadshows giving staff across the University the opportunity to find out the latest developments from Student Services and Project Transform will take place at the end of this month.

The roadshows will be hosted by the Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellors or their representatives, and the Registrar, and all staff are encouraged to attend.

From a UK perspective, the largest and most far-reaching Campus Solutions go live will take place in August. The new student records system will be launched then, replacing many of our legacy systems.

The roadshow will provide an update on the UK implementation and explain more about how we are working to get the University ready for this significant milestone.

Meanwhile, Student Services is in its first year of operations. 2016/17 has been a transitional year with the launch of the new Student Service Centres, using some interim processes – such as module enrolment – in advance of further changes when Campus Solutions becomes live. The roadshow will provide some information about how the new arrangements are developing and bedding in.

Please attend a convenient roadshow and take the opportunity to find out how the coming changes will affect your Faculty/Department. The sessions will last for an hour with an opportunity for informal questions and discussion with Student Services colleagues immediately afterwards.

Colleagues from Student Services and Project Transform will present at the events, but much of the session will be given over to Q&A, giving you the opportunity to ask questions about the changes taking place over the coming months.

The roadshows take place as follows:

  • Wednesday 19 April, 2.30pm, Studio 7, King’s Meadow Campus – hosted by Paul Greatrix, Registrar
  • Tuesday 25 April, 11.30, A4, Medical School, – hosted by Prof Michael Randall, APVC (Education and Student Experience), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
  • Tuesday 2 May, 11.30am, A33 Food Sciences Building, Sutton Bonington – hosted by Prof Kevin Shakesheff, Faculty PVC for Science
  • Friday 5 May, 3pm, DLT3, Exchange Building, Jubilee Campus – hosted by Prof Todd Landman, Faculty PVC for Social Sciences
  • Monday 8 May, 11.30am, C24, Coates Building, University Park – hosted by Prof Sam Kingman, APVC and Deputy Head of the Faculty of Engineering
  • Monday 8 May, 2.30pm, C14, Pope Building, University Park – hosted by Prof Jeremy Gregory, Faculty PVC for Arts

There is no need to book – just turn up on the day.

Trailblazing ‘Nottingham Day’ wins national recognition

April 3rd, 2017

The success of last year’s ‘Nottingham in Parliament Day’ was recognised last week at a black-tie awards ceremony in London.

The University’s Political & Public Affairs Unit, who led the ground-breaking initiative, collected the PRmoment.com ‘Event of the Year’ award in recognition of the day-long celebration of all things Nottingham.

Nottingham in Parliament Day – held on 25 October 2016 – saw over 100 organisations take over the Houses of Parliament for 45 different activities showing off the strengths of the city.

From research showcases with Michelin starred chefs, GSK and Rolls Royce; to “Parliamentary Ping Pong” with Table Tennis England and Robin Hood – 3,000 guests, 140 speakers took part in a trail-blazing initiative with a media reach of 15 million that boosted Nottingham’s profile, highlighted Nottingham’s issues and celebrated Nottingham’s strengths at the heart of government.

With over 800 entries, a jury session involving 93 judges and an awards ceremony attended by over 700 PR and communications professionals – the PRmoment Awards took place in London on Wednesday 29 March 2017.

In the same week, the team learned the initiative has also been shortlisted for the ‘Education Communications Campaign’ award at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Excellence Awards, and been put forward as a European finalist to the global CASE Platinum Awards for ‘Best Practice in Marketing & Communications’. Both awards will be announced in the week commencing 5 June 2017.

New Research Information System – Faculty-wide pilot launched

April 3rd, 2017

The University is about to start the first full-Faculty pilot phase of the new Research Information System – RIS.

Information Services, Research, Enterprise and Graduate Services and the Faculties have worked together to deliver this first step on a project that will evolve further over the next year.

RIS provides a structured mechanism to handle the preparation, approval and submission of grant applications and a user-friendly interface to enable more effective management of live projects. It will replace pFact, ePrints and other systems with a single, modern and integrated tool.

The Faculty of Engineering is now using RIS as its primary tool for research project costings. The team will test workflows and support models through the pilot. All Engineering staff with responsibility for research project data now have access to the tool.

This pilot is expected to last around four weeks. Once it is complete, a schedule outlining the release of RIS to the rest of the University will be released. Training for RIS will be provided in a number of ways, including through Moodle and group sessions. Training schedules will be available prior to full launch and researchers will be notified as soon as it’s available.

Project Sponsor Prof Kevin Shakesheff said: “More than 100 proposals have been entered into the new system and checked before the Faculty pilot was launched, and we look forward to assessing how it operates in a live environment. I’d like to thank the many people across the University who have worked together to get the RIS project to this stage.”

Project Transform Success with Tri-campus systems exercise

March 31st, 2017

Colleagues from UNNC, UNMC and the UK responded to a situation where Campus Solutions and its associated systems were unavailable for a prolonged period of time.

The simulated scenario affected all campuses at a very busy time just after registration, impacting UNNC and UNMC at 1300 on Tuesday 28th March, several hours before the UK would have arrived for work.

Silver Response Teams (teams trained to respond to such disruption to student journey operations) on each campus reacted quickly and made arrangements to issue communications to staff and students, providing alternative ways of working.  Feedback is currently being gathered and lessons learned to ensure we are ready for GoLive on all campuses.

To prove we have the technical capability to recover from a major disruption, colleagues from Project Transform, IS and Ciber worked late into the night on Tuesday 28th March, to switch systems from the main data centre in Slough, over to the disaster recovery site in Frankfurt.

All of the major systems ran ‘live’ from Frankfurt until the evening of Thursday 30th March, when they were then returned to Slough.

During the process, a number of valuable lessons were learnt, which will improve overall technical resilience.

Completing such a test is a first for the University and a major undertaking and achievement.

Taidhgh Oregan, Business Continuity Lead, said “The University can take great confidence from this exercise, it has really demonstrated genuine resilient capability this week.”

Plans on paper are one thing, but bringing them to life really makes a difference. I’m extremely happy with how quickly and effectively each Silver Response team performed across each campus.”
