I now pronounce you husband and wife… And husband and wife… And husband and wife (x10)

April 25th, 2017

Ten couples have shared their special day in the first mass wedding ceremony to take place at The University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC).

The couples, who met and fell in love while studying at the university, were invited to come back as part of celebrations to mark a decade of the organisation’s alumni association.

The wedding ceremony took place at 10am on Saturday 15 April outside the Trent Building at UNNC, in the coastal province of Zhejiang, near Shanghai, China.

While mass weddings are not uncommon in China this was the first of its kind to be held at UNNC and involving former students. It came about after the number of enquiries from alumni wanting to take wedding photographs in the grounds of the campus.

Li Wang, 25, and Shuai, known as Janet, Cheng, 28, were one couple taking part in the nuptials.

Despite both being enrolled onto the same module, at UNNC, and even sitting the same exam in the same classroom they met via social media.

After finishing her last exam, on Monday 5 January 2015, Janet, decided to set up a WeChat account which also showed people online nearby. Coincidently, Li was doing the same thing.

Li began to woo Janet by telling her that she had the same name as the author of his favourite book.

Janet explained that it was as though the two of them had lived in different worlds on the same campus.

She said: “UNNC plays such a significant role in our lives. We met the person we love at UNNC and we wanted other alumni to be the witnesses of our wedding.

“No matter what happens in the future, we will always support each other and we will always be the person nearby for each other.”

Senior Officer for Alumni Relations, Candy Shen, said: “Normally Chinese people get a legal marriage certificate and then set up a wedding feast to celebrate on a different day.

“They may have several wedding feasts so the group alumni wedding party on campus is one of those celebrations although the ceremony itself is classed as an “official” ceremony.

“It is a great way to welcome our alumni back to campus as part of April Fest, the Alumni Homecoming Day.”

Unlike a UK wedding where the father of the bride might make a speech Saturday’s wedding featured words from Professor Stephen Morgan, Associate-Provost of UNNC. Group photos were then scheduled, followed by a group dance at noon and finishing with the ten brides throwing their bouquets to the assembled audience.

Free online course – Ending Slavery

April 24th, 2017

There are more slaves alive today than at any point in history. Around the world, nearly 46 million people are forced to work against their will for no pay.

Responding to this challenge over the past 20 years, a new antislavery movement has shown us that a world without slavery is possible. During this 5-week course, you’ll learn from experts at the cutting edge of human rights research, and you’ll investigate the complex systems that sustain slavery today.

You will consider:

  • Different forms of slavery
  • Ground-breaking research about slavery’s measurement and definition
  • Strategies for ending slavery at the local, national and international levels
  • The roles of governments, businesses, technology, legislation and enslaved people themselves in ending slavery

The course will be taught by Professor Kevin Bales, the world’s leading expert on contemporary slavery and one of the leaders of the antislavery movement, along with Professor Zoe Trodd, a leading expert on antislavery, and Dr. Katie Donington, a slavery historian.

This free course for University students and staff starts on Monday 8 May and can be accessed through Future Learn.

The course is the latest MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) to be offered by FutureLearn, the leading global social learning platform, owned by The Open University.

Maintenance works on Coates Road

April 21st, 2017

From L2 (number 39 on the campus map) westward, Coates Road on University Park will be closed until Friday 5 May while the public space around the west side of Coates Building is improved.

The improvements include creating an accessible path from the rear of L4 (number 30 on the campus map) through to Pope Building, narrowing the road width adjacent to L4 to incease the pavement capacity, removing the dwarf walls and improving the clarity of the vehicular route onto campus between L3 (number 31 on the campus map) and L4.

Estates are taking the opportunity to renew the ageing water main infrastructure along the length of Coates Road.

There will still be access to all of the parking areas between the L buildings, but there will be no thoroughfare for vehicles between L3 and the Coates Building during this period. Staff should therefore be advised to use an alternative entrace to access University Park buildings.

2017 Staff Engagement Survey

April 13th, 2017

At The University of Nottingham we want to enhance our working environment and develop a culture where staff feel supported, motivated and empowered to do what they do best every day.

From Monday 24 April to Friday 19 May, we will be running the 2017 Staff Engagement Survey which will give you the opportunity to provide specific feedback on how you feel about working for The University of Nottingham. It only takes 5-10 minutes to complete.

The survey will help to make the University a better place to work. The results will provide insights into where our key strengths lie and where there is room for improvement. Following the survey, you will be invited to discuss the results within your teams and play a part in making improvements within your Faculty or Department and the wider University.

The independent research company and experts in staff engagement, Gallup, are supporting us with this work. In our survey we will be measuring Gallup’s Q12; 12 items that measure the core elements of a workplace needed to attract, focus and retain the most talented individuals. We will also be measuring a small number of other key workplace areas for the University.

Confidentiality has been paramount in developing this survey, and will remain so when analysing and disseminating the results. The University will not be provided with individual responses or identifying information. Gallup will provide results only for groups with four or more survey participants.

For more information, please visit the Staff Engagement Survey webpage.

Chris Jagger, Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at the University, has won the Association of University Directors of Estates’ (AUDE) Chair’s Award for Long Term Contribution. The award celebrates Chris’ long-term achievements benefiting the higher education estates and facilities management community.

The 2017 AUDE Awards took place on 11 April at Manchester Metropolitan University. Each year the awards celebrate and highlight the achievements of universities and best practice in the industry, including those who lead the way in estate and facilities management.

As Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at the University for over 20 years, Chris has completely transformed the campuses of University which is vast in scale and plays an integral part of navigating the estates at several other campuses in the UK and overseas.

Chris Jagger joined the University in 1995 as director of estate management and has led the development of the estate both in the UK, China and Malaysia.

His leadership and vision has seen the university’s UK and overseas footprint grow enormously.  The University’s UK footprint now stands at 1,614 acres comprising four campus areas and other land holdings within the city of Nottingham and south Nottinghamshire.  The award-winning Jubilee campus was a revolutionary development and created a huge buzz in the sector at the time, successfully reclaiming brown field and capturing the vision of Hopkins Architects.

The judges were on the lookout for individuals who have made a significant contribution to enhancing excellence and ensuring university estates provide best value to support the institutional mission and promote efficiency and effectiveness.
