Building our reputation — Discover Our World

June 19th, 2017

A message from Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor, University of Nottingham:

“As a pioneering university with an ambitious vision, we have much to be proud of.

“From our excellent teaching that inspires our many students, and our ground-breaking research that transforms lives, to our beautiful campuses, and warm, welcoming staff, student and alumni communities across the world — these are the foundations on which our University is built.

“But we cannot afford to stand still in this increasingly competitive environment. To secure our future as a world-leading university, we must share our great strengths with conviction, integrity, and consistency. We must focus on our different stakeholders and better understand their needs, asking them to embrace and become part of the extraordinary world that is the University of Nottingham.

“This is why I am delighted to announce the official launch of our very first global reputation campaign, Discover Our World — to share our stories, increase awareness, raise our profile, and enhance our reputation. Led by External Relations, the campaign aims to inspire and engage our partners and stakeholders by sharing the significant achievements of our staff and students.

“It is often a challenge to communicate the very essence of our great University to all of our audiences — this integrated campaign is the first step in doing this. From this week you will see a series of initiatives that support the Discover Our World campaign including:

  • press and media relations activity
  • social media
  • events
  • thought leadership activity
  • a campaign microsite
  • advertising in key locations in Nottingham city centre, London and Birmingham
  • online and print advertising in local and national newspapers.

“You will also begin to see materials across our campuses in the UK from this week.

“At the heart of this reputation-building is our vision for research. Crucial to this campaign is sharing our research stories; how we secure sustainable food supplies, end slavery, develop greener transport, reduce our reliance on fossil reserves, and develop personalised medicine. By sharing our stories and our research strengths with a global audience we aim to:

  • encourage the brightest and best students to come and study with us
  • attract and retain talented researchers
  • nurture collaborations across the globe
  • enhance our reputation.

“This is an exciting time for all of us at the University of Nottingham as we take positive steps to enhance our global reputation and our profile. I want to thank you all for the hard work and commitment that make achieving our ambitious goals a reality, and I ask you to support this campaign by getting involved where you can.”

With best wishes
Professor Sir David Greenaway

Research Roadshows: our ambitious vision to transform the world

June 19th, 2017

A series of research roadshows recently unveiled the University’s Research Vision and acknowledged the contributions of researchers and support staff in an exciting new chapter in the University’s history.

Staff heard from Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, at roadshows across our three campuses to outline What our Research Vision means for you.

Dame Jessica acknowledged the dedication of researchers and support staff for their ongoing commitment as she outlined the University’s Research Vision, and detailed how this will support and develop our world-class researchers including unlocking and developing potential in people, infrastructure and digital systems.

The audience also heard from the directors of our six new Beacons of Excellence, who will champion the University’s transdisciplinary responses to some of today’s global challenges.

Some of the questions put to Dame Jessica and her colleagues included:

  • how is the Research Vision being funded?
  • how will Research Priority Areas and research hubs engage with the beacons?
  • how will we inspire, measure and evaluate researchers?

These and other questions are addressed on the dedicated Research Vision pages on Workspace.

Here you’ll also find regularly updated information on the University’s investment in research, and details of where to go for support and information. More roadshows across our campuses will follow, with further opportunities to help develop and contribute to our Research Vision.

The University’s Research Vision and investment will be officially unveiled on Thursday 22 June at The Royal Society in London.

Stay Safe – public information film

June 19th, 2017

A message from Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar and Chair of the Incident Management Team.

An information film that provides advice on the steps to take to keep safe in the event of a firearms or weapons attack is available to the public.

The University has taken the decision to highlight this guidance to staff and students in light of the national threat level – which remains at ‘severe’ in the UK. However, it must be stressed that this is not in response to any particular or specific threat to the city or the University. All UK police forces have been asked to share with partner agencies and large organisations.

The four-minute film, released by National Counter Terrorism Policing, sets out three key steps for keeping safe and is available at
www.npcc.police.uk/staysafe. The film is accompanied by a transcript and an online information leaflet.

The film and leaflet advise that in the unlikely event you are caught up in an incident to ‘run, hide and tell’ – guidance which can be applied to many places and situations. RUN if you can. If you can’t run, HIDE. Then, when you can, TELL the police what’s happening so they can get there quickly to stop the threat. Also tell others of the threat so they don’t approach the danger.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, speaking on behalf of National Counter-Terrorism Policing said: “The public should not be alarmed by this step. While the general level of threat to the UK is severe, the probability of being caught up in a firearms or weapons attack is very, very small. However, it is important the public know what to do in the event of getting caught up in such an incident.”

If you have any concerns please contact the University’s Security team.

Phone: 0115 9513599 (ext 13599 internally) for Security Reception
Phone: 0115 9513013 (ext 13013 internally) for 24 Hour Security Control
Phone: 0115 9518888 (ext 18888 internally) for Emergencies ONLY
Email: security@nottingham.ac.uk.The Security Control and Emergencies numbers are in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Vice-Chancellor receives honorary degree

June 14th, 2017

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham has been honoured by one of Canada’s oldest universities.

Professor Sir David Greenaway attended Spring Convocation at University of Western Ontario, where he was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Sir David joins the ranks of innovators, politicians, an iconic Canadian author, industry titans and a former member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada all receiving honorary degrees as part of the university’s 309th Convocation.

It was given in recognition of his contribution to both economics and education over the last four decades.

Sir David said: “I am absolutely delighted to have received this recognition from the University of Western Ontario, one of Canada’s oldest and most distinguished Universities. It is a signal honour, and as well as being thrilled at a personal level, I also regard it as important recognition for our University.”

In conferring the honour Professor Audra Bowlas spoke about Sir David’s extraordinary career and his connections to Canada.

She said: “Sir David is an internationally renowned economist. His work has been cited more than 20,000 times and he has published in numerous world-class journals. His connections to Western include a 15-year collaboration with Professor Emeritus John Whalley as co-editors of the journal The World Economy.”

She spoke of his public service achievements including Chairman and member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body, the UK Senior Salaries Review Body, and as consultant to the World Bank, the European Commission, the United Nations, the Department for Transport and the UK Treasury.

She also lauded his commitment to fundraising through ambitious bicycle challenges.

In addressing the graduates from the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Faculty of Social Science, Sir David encouraged them to reflect on the enduring nature of universities, where scholars engage the public and continually work to transform the world.

He said: “Graduates are entering a world of rapid change and challenges that come with that will define their lives and generations.

“Maintain high standards. Be bold and ambitious. Be resilient, and be prepared to take risks,” he said.

“If you take risks, sometimes you will fail and failure is not always a comfortable thing to deal with. But it is an essential thing to deal with because you can’t make progress without it.

“Be determined, apply yourself relentlessly. Work hard. Always retain a degree of humility and be prepared to listen. Always set out to give more than you take.”

UoN graduates earn above-average salaries according to new data

June 14th, 2017

Graduates from the University of Nottingham are earning more and could be progressing faster up the career ladder according to government data.

The Department for Education has released data to show how much UK graduates of 22 different courses are earning one, three, five and ten years since graduating.

The Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data released on Tuesday 13 June uses tax, benefits and student loans data to compile employment and salary information.

In 14 of the subjects included in the data Nottingham graduates have earnings at least £3,000 above the average for all universities.

In 15 of the subjects the data shows that the rank of the median salary for Nottingham graduates improves between one and five years after graduation, in some cases by over 10 places. This suggests that graduates from the University of Nottingham progress in their careers faster than graduates from other universities.

Top earners include graduates in medicine, economics and mathematical sciences who command average earnings of £48,500, £47,900 and £39,400 respectively after five years. Nottingham ranked 4th, 9th and 8th respectively for high earners in these subjects across all universities.

The top ranked subjects were English, Medicine, and Social Studies where the earnings of Nottingham graduates after five years were ranked 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively when compared to all universities.

Dr Paul Greatrix, Registrar, said: “It is encouraging to see a healthy rise in average salary for Nottingham graduates between one and five years after graduation. Median earnings vary between subjects, as would be expected, but it is good to see Nottingham’s graduates faring very well compared with graduates from other universities across nearly all our subjects.”

The University of Nottingham has long been recognised for the calibre of its graduates. It is the best university in the UK for graduate employment, according to the 2017 The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide and has been cited as one of the best universities for finding graduate recruits.

It is also ranked in the world top 60 universities for employability by the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2017.

Acting Director of the Russell Group Dr Tim Bradshaw said: “University is about more than future earnings but this will be a factor for many young people who are considering their options.

“We know employers value our graduates. These figures suggest that they are willing to pay a premium for them too. Russell Group graduates benefit from high average incomes after they leave university.

“From psychology to social sciences and law and from computer sciences to engineering and physical science, Russell Group universities outperform in the graduate earnings table. Russell Group universities occupy the top 11 places in the graduate earnings table for law. In maths, our members occupy the top eight places. There is a similar pattern in other subject areas too.

“This is only the first year of LEO data but it is clear this resource will be useful for applicants who want to know how their choice of university will affect their income.”

LEO looks at data from graduates from 2008/9 to 2012/13. There are a number of caveats around using the figures including the difference the region graduates live in makes on the salary levels, and the fact that the data is raw and uncontrolled, based on historic figures and not comprehensive. For more details visit the government website.
