2017/18 leadership and management programmes available for application

July 3rd, 2017

Apply or register your interest now for the Leadership and Management Academy (LMA) programmes for 2017/18.

Are you interested in enhancing your leadership and management practice? Do you want more flexibility in your leadership style?

Whether you’re leading large teams across multiple sites, a small team or project, or even if you are thinking of applying for a leadership position in the future, there’s something for you in the LMA.

With a mix of workshops, coaching, 360° analysis, and the application of learning in practice through a work based project, you’ll be learning and working with people from your peer group from across the University.

The first programmes open for application are:

  • Leadership for High Performing Teams, Departments and Research Groups
Learn to deal more effectively with the challenges and dilemmas of being a senior leader at the University of Nottingham, review and reflect on your own leadership style and learn how to shape it, and explore and enhance aspects of leadership that are important for you and our University.

In broad terms, this programme will be right for you if you are in a senior role that might have cross-University connections, although is more likely to have breadth across a Faculty or Department. Your role is likely to be at L6 or L7. This programme is designed for staff from all job families at these levels. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 1 August 2017.
  • Leadership for High Performing Teams
Explore aspects of leadership that are important to your role, and really understand your leadership style. Workshops will focus on four specific leadership themes: change leader, organised/effective leader, motivated leader and future-proof leader. We’ll look at the leadership skills needed to motivate and engage your staff, to deal with conflict, to support them through change, and to handle difficult conversations. And bringing these leadership skills together, we’ll enable you to consider the application of these skills in an organisational context.

This programme is ideal if you’re leading teams at an operational level — whether it’s in an academic, research, or professional services context. It’s likely that LHPT will be the right programme for you if you’re already leading — whether that’s a team of people, or a project, or a programme – and in doing so you’re engaging with a wide range of stakeholders. Your role is likely to be at L4, L5 or L6, and staff from all job families are invited to apply. The deadline for applications is Tuesday 1 August 2017.

Each of these programme combines blended learning, personal diagnostics, group coaching, the application of learning in practice through a work based project, and the opportunity to learn with your peers from across different areas of the University.

You can find out more about these programmes on the LMA Hub on Moodle, or by contacting a member of the Leadership and Management Team.

There’s a raft of on-line learning resources available for all staff to access on the Learning and Resources page of the LMA Hub. From change management and emotional intelligence to personal impact and managing stress, there’s a range of topics to choose from. You can also discover more about what’s available from the Leadership and Management Academy by downloading the prospectus. If you’d prefer a hard copy, please email a member of the LMA team.

Our Research Vision: introducing the Rights Lab

July 3rd, 2017

The University of Nottingham’s Rights Lab is working to help end global slavery by 2030.

It is one of our six Beacons of Excellence – transdisciplinary areas of world-leading research excellence that address global challenges.

The Beacons were unveiled at the Royal Society in London at the launch of the University of Nottingham’s Research Vision, an unprecedented investment of more than £200m in our people and our research. The launch attracted widespread media coverage of how the University will attract world-class talent and enhance our international reputation as we address all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

By supporting the work of our researchers, we will enhance our reputation around the world for discoveries that will change lives, attract further funding for research and forge deeper international partnerships.

Our Beacons of Excellence are instrumental in building this reputation. Each addresses a key global challenge. Following an introduction to Propulsion Futures, which places Nottingham’s expertise at the heart of a revolution in greener transport, the spotlight now falls on the Rights Lab and the fight to end slavery.

There are 46 million people enslaved today. Working closely with slavery survivors, governments and NGOs, our Rights Lab has built the world’s first truly large-scale research platform for ending slavery. The University is home to the world’s leading contemporary slavery experts, including Professor Kevin Bales, CMG, whose work on slavery has been named one of the top ‘World-Changing Discoveries’ by the Association of British Universities.

Professor Zoe Trodd, Director of the Rights Lab, says: “The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals call for an end to slavery by 2030. To help achieve this, the Rights Lab is underpinning antislavery with an advanced research platform for the first time in the 230-year history of antislavery action. Our comprehensive disciplinary breadth means we can apply the lessons of past antislavery movements as a usable past; design new mental health recovery techniques for survivors of slavery; understand slavery’s relationship to environmental destruction; and design new slavery-free supply chains, to mention just a few of our projects.”

Todd Landman, Rights Lab Executive Director and Pro Vice Chancellor, Faculty of Social Sciences, adds: “The Rights Lab brings together more than 100 scholars at the University of Nottingham across a wide range of disciplines and projects, all dedicated to understanding and ending modern slavery. The scale of the University and the quality of our scholars provides the perfect platform for addressing this significant global challenge, while our commitment to scientific and methodological rigour means we are establishing systematic evidence and analysis of modern slavery.”

Ending slavery will create a better world for everyone – read more about this Freedom Dividend in Professor Trodd’s introduction to the Rights Lab.

How Nottingham is mapping slavery from space

Trans Working Party recognised as sector-leading practice

July 3rd, 2017

The University is committed to advancing equality for trans staff and students and ensuring their voice is at the heart of activities that affect them.

For the last year, a key way we have been doing this is through the Trans Working Party; a partnership between the LGBTQ Network, HR and other colleagues working together to remove barriers to equality and to raise awareness of issues impacting on trans members of the University community.

The work of the University’s Trans Working Party has now been featured as an example of sector-leading practice in a report published by HEFCE. The report shares innovative national practice in advancing equality and diversity, and the work of the Trans Working Party has been included as a case study that will be entered into a searchable web repository of good practice for the higher education sector. The work of the group has resulted in ongoing organisational change, such as the amendment of some important university systems to include the gender non-specific title Mx. If you would like to find out more, or to feed into further work to support trans colleagues, please visit the trans web pages.

For more information about the Trans Working Party, contact Natasha Russell.

Trans equality – Help us to go further

We recognise that we have further work to do to support trans colleagues within the institution, and want to understand how best to take this forward. We are keen to learn from the experiences of trans colleagues to inform this activity. We’d like to understand the impact of the work done so far and identify any new issues to address. Your views and experiences will help us to support the development of a more inclusive working environment.

If you are interested in being consulted about your experiences of gender identity and/or trans history in the workplace, please contact Justine Wallis-Leggett.

Please be assured that any feedback will be entirely confidential, and that participation in any future activities resulting from this consultation will be entirely voluntary. We look forward to hearing your views.

Moodle and Rogo downtime in August – now complete

June 27th, 2017

Updated: The August downtime is now over and the full functionality of Moodle and Rogo has been restored. Thank you for your patience during this essential work.

There will be a period of downtime for both Moodle and Rogo between Tuesday 1 August and Thursday 3 August. During this time there will be read-only revision versions of the systems. Read the message from Professor Sarah O’Hara for more information.

Dear colleagues,

As you will be aware, the implementation of Campus Solutions will mean a change to all of our module codes.  We are now ready to make these changes to the codes for modules running on the Ningbo, China campus in 2017-18.

Rest assured that it is only the module code in the title of the module that will be changing. Module content will not be affected, and links to reading lists and lecture captures will be automatically updated.

Moodle and Rogo downtime for all campuses

We will be updating the system from 6pm UK time on Tuesday 1 August to 6pm UK time on Thursday 3 August (1am Wednesday 2 August to 1am Friday 4 August in China and Malaysia). Both Moodle and Rogo will be unavailable during this time across all campuses (China, Malaysia and UK) but revision-only versions of the systems will be available to support students who are undergoing exams in the resit period later in August.

Please note that this work requires a short period of complete downtime for Moodle and Rogo between 6pm and 8pm UK time (1am and 3am CN/MY) on 1 August while we turn the read-only revision versions on. Then, on 3 August, a brief period of downtime before we return to the full versions.

This work is being carefully planned to minimise disruption to our normal business. As you know, these changes are necessary to change the source of authority from Saturn to Campus Solutions.

Any questions

Please do not hesitate to contact learning-technologies@nottingham.ac.uk if you have any questions about the downtime for Moodle and Rogo.  Both staff and students will receive reminders about this over the coming weeks. We would greatly appreciate your support in disseminating this information.

Best wishes,
Professor Sarah O’Hara

Research Vision Update

June 27th, 2017

On Thursday 22 June we launched our Research Vision and a planned investment of more than £200m at the Royal Society in London to an audience of policymakers, funders, partners, potential collaborators and the media.

The investment, the most the University has ever dedicated to research, will support our world-leading experts in finding solutions to six global issues.

External speakers at the Royal Society included Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation. He said: “With one of the largest research and development investments in the East Midlands, the University of Nottingham is at the forefront of UK innovation, supporting the creation of hundreds of local jobs and pioneering start-ups.”

Professor Philip Nelson, Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) also attended and welcomed the news. He said: “The core purpose of the EPRSC is to make the UK the best place in the world to research, discover and innovate. To achieve this we work with universities across the UK to support research and develop skills. This investment by the University of Nottingham is incredibly exciting — not only due to its scale and vision — but because it is predominantly an investment in people.”

The investment will help transform lives: even more world-class facilities and equipment will support the capture and delivery of discoveries with impact. It will also accelerate a commitment to attract the brightest and best minds through the recruitment of 100 Research Fellows, while creating and strengthening high-performance teams of researchers from across the University.

Beacons of Excellence

As part of this investment we are funding six Beacons of Excellence – multi-disciplinary research programmes focused on finding solutions to today’s global challenges.

Over the next six weeks we’ll be focusing on each of the beacons, introducing their research, key researchers and highlighting the ground-breaking projects they are working on.

Our first featured beacon is Propulsion Futures.

Transport is on the cusp of a revolution.

To meet mounting economic and environmental pressures, we are being challenged to identify new ways of moving people and goods, while escaping our dependency on conventional fuel systems.

Greener transport will be at the heart of this revolution, with the biggest game changer being electrified propulsion. Within this beacon, we are driving the discovery and translation of new materials, components and technologies to drive innovative electrified propulsion systems in this a new age of sustainable transport.

We are perfectly positioned to make a significant impact with our research.

We are a global specialist in sustainable materials, electrification and transport technologies.

We will investigate all aspects of new electric propulsion systems, including:

  • high-power density electrical machines
  • innovative high-efficiency designs
  • hybridisation and new power generation systems
  • efficient transmission
  • power converters
  • smart systems
  • systems integration
  • high performance materials
  • energy harvesting
  • energy generation and storage

We will utilise new sustainable materials to deliver high performance, reliable and most importantly eco-friendly propulsion systems, securing economic and strategic benefits for the UK and the world.

Propulsion Futures Director Professor David Grant said: “We will lead advances in electrified propulsion with our expertise in power electronics, smart systems and sustainable materials. We will use a holistic approach towards the development of all aspects of the propulsion of electric and hybrid electric transport vehicles.

“We are at the heart of the Midlands, and the UK and significantly at the heart of research collaborations with industry.”

To find out more read Professor Grant’s blog or visit  www.nottingham.ac.uk/world.

Please note, the name of this beacon is Propulsion Futures, not Propulsion Imaging as communicated in error last Thursday.
