Research Information System — update

July 11th, 2017

The Proposal Development and Costing part of the new Research Information System (RIS) (Work Package A) has been successfully launched in all of our UK schools and faculties and we are planning to roll out the award management part of the system (Work Package B) in the Autumn.

Feedback to date on RIS has been positive, with users reporting that the system is relatively simple to navigate and easier to use as a costing tool than the university’s historic pFACT system.

More than 650 funding applications have been entered into RIS by academic and research management staff from all faculties and over 160 of these have now progressed to the stage where we are waiting for a response from the relevant funder.

By the end of the three-month faculty roll out period more staff were using RIS than the total number of registered pFACT users. Some of you may be aware that the salary information within pFACT has not been updated recently and we are now at the stage where we need to decommission the pFACT system.

From Tuesday 1 August 2017, pFACT will therefore be switched to a read only system. From that date costing information in pFACT will be accessible, but it won’t be possible to update existing costings or create any new ones – since this should now be done in RIS.

If you have any existing costings in pFACT that you might like to progress to the application stage in the future, please contact the designated RIS Manager for your faculty to discuss transferring this information across to RIS as soon as possible. The relevant contacts for each faculty are:-

  • Faculty of Arts – Sally Bowden
  • Faculty of Engineering – Rachel Brereton or Karen Attreed
  • Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences – Jonathan Hollands
  • Faculty of Social Sciences – Paula Gurteen
  • Faculty of Science – Shaun Beebe

If you haven’t yet registered for RIS and would like to do so then all staff members can do this by accepting the Terms and Conditions on the RIS learning module on Moodle. Your account will be activated within 48 hours.

A message of thanks from Professor Karen Cox

July 11th, 2017

A message from Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the University of Nottingham.

I just want to say a few words of thanks as I leave this wonderful place with all its fabulous people.

I came to this University in 1994 and when I arrived I had no idea that this was the place where I would grow my career, my friendships and my family and have experiences I never would have dreamed of.

I achieved my PhD here, secured my first lectureship, secured a senior lectureship, was promoted to professor, became a head of school, a pro-vice-chancellor and now have the privilege of being deputy vice-chancellor. I have travelled the world from here, spent time at the University of Pennsylvania, Trinity College Dublin and Yale, met and worked with fantastic people, students, colleagues and mentors. In those 23 years I also got married, had two wonderful children and built a home and a life here in Nottingham.

For all of that I feel very lucky. Lucky to have a job that is so varied, that allows me to contribute to my profession of nursing and healthcare, to undertake teaching to develop future generations, to carry out research that changes and influences practice, to shape and lead an organisation of which I am very proud and to work in a sector which I firmly believes transforms lives.

But above all I feel lucky to have worked with fantastic people. A few who I want to mention include; Jane Robinson, the Foundation Professor of Nursing who took a punt on me and gave me the opportunity to work at Nottingham; Nicky James and Jim Carmichael, my PhD supervisors and early mentors; my colleagues in the School of Nursing who supported me as Head of School for five years; all of my UEB colleagues over the years; and importantly David Greenaway who took a chance on me in 2008 when I became pro-vice-chancellor and then deputy vice-chancellor in 2013. Getting to know David has been a real joy and privilege and I am forever grateful that he has been such an integral part of my career at Nottingham.

No one achieves anything on their own, we are always better versions of ourselves when we work together, and as such we achieve more together. So thank you for being with me on this journey and making me better and achieve more; I will take you all with me in my memories as I leave this place and go on to the next adventure.

Thank you all so much for your friendship and support, I shall miss you and this university very much.

Yours sincerely
Karen Cox

Our Research Vision: introducing Precision Imaging

July 11th, 2017

Precision Imaging is one of our six Beacons of Excellence – transdisciplinary areas of world-leading research excellence that address global challenges.

Our Beacons of Excellence were unveiled at the Royal Society in London at the launch of the University of Nottingham’s Research Vision, a landmark investment of  more than £200m in our people and our research.

Our ambition is for our University to be recognised as among the very best in the world. Our Beacons of Excellence are at the core of this global vision.

The beacons will drive significant inward investment to our internationally renowned research areas, and support our ambitious vision by increasing collaboration, strengthening networks and partnerships, attracting diverse funding, and raising the reputation of our world-changing research.

Each beacon addresses a key global challenge and collectively they address all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Following introductions to Propulsion Futures and the Rights Lab, the spotlight now falls on Precision Imaging.

We are the home of MRI and our pioneering invention continues to transform lives and medical care across the world. MRI is now used in more than 60 million clinical examinations around the world every year.

We have an internationally leading position in biomedical imaging research, and our advances in medical imaging are driving the development of personalised therapies in mental health and other chronic diseases.

Professor Dorothee Auer, Director of Precision Imaging, said Nottingham’s biomedical imaging research has revolutionised medical diagnosis across the world.

The next step for precision imaging in medicine is to deliver personalised and pre-emptive care — where treatments are tailored to each person’s individual pathology and health risk.

Professor Auer added: “The hope for such a healthcare revolution is underpinned by massively accelerated biomedical breakthroughs fuelled by technological, science and knowledge advances and, last but not least, big data.

“The bottleneck problem for personalised or precision medicine is diagnosis: how to identify the person at risk of becoming ill, the person who needs treating, and, above all, the right treatment.

“Our vision is that next generation imaging can address these diagnostic needs — providing the magic looking glass and guiding the magic wand of precision medicine.”

Over the coming weeks we will introduce the remaining three Beacons of Excellence: Future Food, Smart Industrial Systems and Green Chemicals, while highlighting how our investment is supporting all researchers in the delivery of exceptional discoveries.

What our Research Vision means for you

We cannot achieve the ambitious goals of our Research Vision without the support of researchers and all colleagues working across the University.

Research colleagues should have received a guide entitled ‘What our Research Vision means for you’. This guide outlines the opportunities available, and where to go for help and support. You can also access the guide on the dedicated Research Vision Workspace. A guide to the opportunities our research investment offers to Professional Services and support staff is also now available on the Research Vision Workspace.

Our beacons are just part of a significant investment in the resources, people, infrastructure and environment essential to delivering our world-leading discoveries and your input, support and engagement is invaluable.

We will be holding further research roadshows over the summer for you to hear Professor Dame Jessica Corner outline what the Research Vision means for you, and how you can get involved – to support and shape the future of research at our University. Look out for more roadshow dates in the coming weeks.

Changes to trentbarton 21 and 23 routes

July 10th, 2017

From Sunday 23 July, the 21 and 23 trentbarton bus routes will be combined.

The new simple and more frequent connection will run between Heanor, Ilkeston, Kirk Hallam, Stapleford and Nottingham.

This new route will run up to every 30 minutes Monday-Saturday, and will also call at Ilkeston Hospital and the Queens Medical Centre.

Also, a change of route in Cotmanhay means the service will travel along Heanor Road instead of Cotmanhay Road and Nelson Street. Cotmanyhay Road will continue to be served by the ‘Ilkeston flyer‘ and ‘the two‘ services.

Staff Engagement Survey — initial results and what happens next

July 7th, 2017

In April/May this year most of you completed our Staff Engagement Survey — our first since 2011. Thanks once again for sharing your views on how you feel about working at the University of Nottingham. We can now share the high-level results and outline what will happen next across the University.

We worked with Gallup to deliver the survey and are the very first UK university to attempt to measure staff engagement in this way. The response rate of 61% is very positive. It shows most of you are interested in feeding back on your working environment and improving how you and colleagues engage within the University.

Survey results – what you told us

The survey results highlight that there is much work to be done to achieve the aims of our People Strategy — part of Global Strategy 2020. While there are areas where we are doing well, the results clearly show that there are areas where we need to do better in supporting colleagues — particularly in understanding the University’s strategic aims, and the part you play in achieving them.

Our relative strengths are: many of you feel the work your colleagues do is of a high quality; and in the last six months many of you have discussed your progress with your manager. A significant number of you also told us you felt you had a ‘best friend’ at work.

Our weaknesses lie around a deep institutional understanding of the University’s mission and purpose: whether the strategy makes your job seem important; whether you felt you had the opportunity to do what you do best every day; and whether you fully understand what’s expected of you in your role.

Jaspal Kaur, Director of HR, said: “The results of the survey provide a solid basis on which to improve our communication and engagement with colleagues across the institution. I want to thank again everyone who took part in this important process.

“By collecting and analysing the experiences and opinions of colleagues working at all levels within our University we can begin to paint a more accurate picture of the working environment and, most importantly, reflect on how we can improve it. Engagement is everybody’s responsibility and we all have our part to play.”

What happens next

Every Department in the University has been tasked with discussing their results with all staff, and using the outcomes to create action plans which build on strengths and address areas of weakness.

A network of Engagement Champions has also been created to support the culture change needed to improve engagement across the University, and they will guide and support this process. Expected timings are as follows:

• Monday 10 July — Identified managers and Engagement Champions receive access to their results
• July to October — Discussions take place with colleagues within departments and action plans are drafted
• September — UEB discuss institution-wide implications of the survey and action planning progress
• Early November — Local and University-level action plans in place, with Engagement Champions driving implementation of the plans across all Departments
• December — HR review action plans to report to UEB
• January 2018 — Action plans and report reviewed by UEB to ensure appropriate progress is being made
• Throughout 2018 — Implementation and ongoing review of action plans, sharing best practice through our Engagement Champions network

Engagement Champions will be in contact over the coming weeks with more detailed next steps for your area.

The University-level action plan will incorporate four themes: leadership and management; wellbeing and inclusivity; talent and development; and communications and change. This plan will be available for all staff to view once it’s complete.

We have also recently completed a comprehensive review and refresh of our Global Strategy 2020, with many of you adding your voice to the consultation process. UEB and the senior leadership team will be driving communication of the refreshed strategy over the coming months, helping colleagues understand the part they play in helping achieve our aims and objectives. We will also be sharing progress and good news stories about colleagues and departments who have contributed so far.
