Last year’s Wonder Festival was very successful. We had 7,280 visitors to campus on the day.
We surveyed 3.4% of the visitors to the event. Of those surveyed, 91% were from local postcodes (NG, DE, LW) and the number of families attending through partnerships with schools in less advantaged areas increased. 65% of parents surveyed said they want their child to attend university, and 77% of attendees said they would recommend Wonder as an event to others.
You can read more about Wonder 2017 in the attached presentation.
Following the last MayFest in 2015, preparations for Wonder in June 2017 began 18 months prior to the event, and so we will look to 2019 to hold our next festival so that we can secure the scale, quality and impact it deserves.
We received a lot of helpful and constructive feedback from those who worked with us to develop the event. Valid questions included whether Wonder should do more to go into those communities across Nottingham that the University doesn’t normally reach – or even have a presence in the city centre. There is also more the University can do to improve the event to make it more efficient, bring in more sponsorship and in-kind support from local partners and businesses – and enhance the experience for those attending on the day.
As part of its new Research Strategy, the University is in the process of refreshing the approach it takes to supporting, coordinating and promoting the public engagement activity taking place across the institution. With the new Nottingham Public Engagement Network now at over 300 members, the appointment of Faculty Public Engagement Leads and a University-wide Steering Group has been established. A Head of Public Engagement will also be appointed to support this activity. We hope that, through these groups and others such as the Outreach Network and the Practitioners of Outreach Operations Group, we can have an open conversation about what the University does next to build on Wonder for 2019…
There is a huge amount of public and community festival engagement taking place over the next year. For example, the University will be providing some support for the Festival of Science and Curiosity, which takes place across the city centre and some of Nottingham’s most deprived networks. Our Faculties, Schools and Academics will also be heavily involved in the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences, the Being Human Festival, Pint of Science 2018, Malaysia Fest 2018 and the East Midlands Big Bang Festival. We will seek to pass on the learning and experience of Wonder 2017 to the organisers of these initiatives and many more.

Are you familiar with the meeting and conference venues located around our campuses?
Throughout our Nottingham campuses we have a wide selection of University-owned conference and events spaces, including:
- Over 500 meeting spaces, teaching rooms and lecture theatres (up to 550 capacity), as well as more than 4000 bedrooms
- East Midlands Conference Centre (EMCC): 21 event spaces and 2002 m² exhibition space
- Orchard Hotel: Four meeting rooms and an executive lounge, Brailsford suite, Bramleys Brasserie and 202 bedrooms
- Jubilee Conference Centre: Eight event spaces, Spokes restaurant and 95 bedrooms
All internal staff and team members who manage venue bookings are being encouraged to consider using campus-based venues as a way of helping to promote the University and reducing expenditure on external facilities.
The message stems from a recent procedural requirement — introduced by the Financial Stability Task Force — for staff to contact Nottingham Conferences, the University’s in-house conference department, to ascertain if an internal venue option can be offered at an equivalent or lower cost than an external venue.
Overall, the budget holder remains accountable for achieving good value from all University expenditure whilst retaining the discretion to make the decision to use either internal or external venues.
Find out more by calling Nottingham Conferences (extension #86100 or 0115 7486100) or email conferences@nottingham.ac.uk.

Do you have a great idea for a sustainability-related project but need funding to make it happen? If so, the Environment Initiative Fund may be the solution!
Each year, the University’s Sustainability and Environment Committee awards around £100,000 to student or staff-led sustainability projects.
Projects funded in recent years include:
- A Health, Food and the Environment exploratory workshop engaging local stakeholders in developing learning resources to support undergraduate teaching on the topic of food, health and sustainability.
- The Wortley Hall Close passive house project, to retrofit a domestic house on University Park campus to meet passive house standards, benefitting tenants and also offering a demonstration site as part of the Department of Architecture and Built Environment’s Creative Energy Homes project.
- The #BeastsofUoN photo competition, which provided a focal point for those interested in the biodiversity of our outdoor spaces, highlighting the wellbeing benefits of our campuses and encouraging people to explore these spaces.
Applications to the Environment Initiative Fund are currently being welcomed for 2017/18. If you have an idea on how to make the University or local community a more sustainable place to work, live and study, you’re invited to apply.
The deadline for applications is Thursday 22 February.
For further details, visit the Environment Initiative Fund webpage.

A number of students will encounter problems during their time at University, and members of staff may be called on to provide some help.
Problems that may be academic, personal or practical and difficulties in one area can often have an impact on other areas of the student’s life. Some students may directly approach staff members to ask for support. Others may be reluctant to ask and try to struggle on but their problems may become apparent.
What to do about this will depend on a number of factors.
To help staff identify and respond to students in difficulty, the Campus Life division has recently published an updated version of its staff-facing document focused on this subject. The guide is intended to help members of staff to:
- Clarify their own role and the limits of their responsibility towards students in difficulty
- Work out when (and when not) to intervene
- Identify problems
- Decide what to do about them
Read the guide here.

The University and the Copyright Licence Agency (CLA) is currently conducting a data collection exercise affecting all staff who photocopy or re-use published material, containing content under copyright, for teaching purposes.
Although not an audit, the exercise — running until 23 February 2018 — will provide the CLA with indications of copying or re-use, enabling appropriate payments to be made to the rights holders, rewarding authors, publishers and visual creators accordingly.
Copying from books, journals, magazines or any other published material which includes copyright content should be reported during the collection period: You may see posters describing how to report this, along with yellow data collection boxes, at selected photocopiers/printers across our campuses.
You can find out more on the Libraries website.
