There is still time to contribute to the consultation for the new University strategy. Thanks to all those who have already done so through the Town Hall meetings which have taken place, local team meetings, consultation stands and the online questionnaire.
If you weren’t able to attend one of the Town Hall meetings, you can view a video of the Vice-Chancellor’s and Deputy Vice-Chancellors’s presentation here.
We continue to welcome your input and feedback to develop the future for the University, so please complete the new strategy questionnaire by Tuesday 30 April 2019. You have the option of completing all of it or only those sections that are most relevant to you. Your views will be used to inform a final draft strategy for further consideration across our community.
If you have any questions please email scu@nottingham.ac.uk.

Her main research interests are in bone healing and osteoarthritis.
Commenting on her appointment, Brigitte said:
“I am honoured and thrilled to accept the role as the Dean of the School of Medicine. I look forward to working with staff, students and partners in leading the School through the next stages of its development, and furthering its renowned medical research and teaching programmes.
“I intend to build on the impressive legacy of our current Dean, Professor Tony Avery, ensuring that the School of Medicine delivers modern technology-enabled learning, research which addresses the greatest needs of patients, and cutting-edge clinical practice for the people of our region.”
Professor John Atherton, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, said:
“I am delighted with Brigitte’s appointment to this important leadership role in the Faculty. Her pioneering achievements over her career made her the ideal candidate to lead the School of Medicine and deliver outstanding teaching and research that will have a real impact on health and wellbeing in the region.
“Brigitte has demonstrated the highest standards throughout her career whether that has been within her clinical practice or an academic setting. She has experience in leading and supporting colleagues and students throughout their medical training and professional development, and brings a strong vision and commitment to medical education and research.”

A new open access initiative is being rolled out across Europe and beyond called Plan S. The new initiative comes into effect on Wednesday 1 January 2020 and states that:
“By 2020 scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants provided by participating national and European research councils and funding bodies, must be published in compliant Open Access Journals or on compliant Open Access Platforms.”
The initiative is supported by cOAlition S — an international consortium of research funders — and has been endorsed by funding organisations including UKRI, Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Although the plan talks about scientific publications, the funders are clear that this will include all research, not just in the sciences.
Plan S is a bid to accelerate transition towards full and immediate open access to research publications and comprises a framework of 10 principles. These include:
cOAlition S has further released implementation guidance on Plan S, which is currently being reviewed following feedback. We expect the results of this review to be published in the spring.
The Wellcome Trust have already realigned their open access policy to incorporate Plan S requirements and other funders, including UKRI, are similarly adapting their open access policies to align with Plan S.
If you have any queries over how this may affect your publishing, please contact the Research Support Team at openaccess@nottingham.ac.uk. For more information please also see our Plan S webpage, which we will be updating as further information is released.

Professor Liz Sockett of the School of Life Sciences has become the first female University of Nottingham scientist to be elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
Professor Sockett is one of 50 eminent scientists from across the world to be elected to the prestigious society this year.
Liz has made her name in the global fight against antibiotic resistance through her work on the predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. These bacteria act like living antibiotics as they naturally invade and destroy pathogenic superbugs like Klebsiella, E. coli, and Salmonella, which cause increasingly hard-to-treat infections.
Reacting to her new fellowship, Professor Sockett said: “I’m very honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. It is recognition of what a fascinating living creature the predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is, and what amazing details can be discovered by working with diverse colleagues who bring insights, dedication and kindness to work daily.”
Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham said: “I am absolutely delighted that Liz Sockett has been awarded this most prestigious scientific honour. It is richly deserved. Liz is one of the University of Nottingham’s leading women scientists, her work into predatory bacteria, showing their anti-pathogen activities and alliances with host’s immune system in killing bacterial infection, is amongst the most exciting in science today and has massive potential for developing new antibacterial systems for human health. It is wonderful that she has been recognised by the Royal Society for her work.”
Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society, said: “Over the course of the Royal Society’s vast history, it is our Fellowship that has remained a constant thread and the substance from which our purpose has been realised; to use science for the benefit of humanity. This year’s newly elected Fellows and Foreign Members of the Royal Society embody this, being drawn from diverse fields of enquiry—epidemiology, geometry, climatology—at once disparate, but also aligned in their pursuit and contributions of knowledge about the world in which we live, and it is with great honour that I welcome them as Fellows of the Royal Society.”
Professor Sockett will be formally admitted as a Fellow to the Royal Society at the Admissions Day ceremony in July, when she will sign the Charter Book and the Obligation of the Fellows of the Royal Society.
To find out more about Liz’s research, listen to BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific.
