International Women’s Day Civic Showcase – can you join us on Sunday 8 March?

January 31st, 2020

On Sunday 8 March, the University of Nottingham will be joining with Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham City Council for an event in the Old Market Square to celebrate International Women’s Day.

As with similar public engagement events like Wonder, we are hoping to showcase some of the amazing work that happens across our campuses, in a fun and interactive way. For this International Women’s Day event, we want to show, in particular, some of the fabulous women of our university community, to inspire the young women of Nottingham to ignore preconceptions and prejudice about gender roles and limitations.

Where and when?
UoN-NTU shared marquee on the Old Market Square, Nottingham

Sunday 8 March, 10:30-14:30 (if a planned activity doesn’t require much setup, we could split the day into 10:30-12:30 and 12:30-14:30 sessions)

Who?
Inspiring women from the UoN community. In particular we would love to feature women whose jobs or roles challenge traditional stereotypes, and those who represent the broader diversity of our community.

What?
Public engagement / showcasing activities aimed at the general public, particularly families and young women – we can provide electricity and a table or space to setup a stand. We have a little funding available to help cover the cost of getting equipment there on the day, although we aren’t able to pay people to take part.

Objectives
This is part of a broader set of celebrations around International Women’s Day 2020, which will include staff and student focused activities on campus in the surrounding weeks. This event aims to work proactively with Nottingham Trent University and the City Council to showcase – to the public and our civic partners – some of the inspiring and world-changing research happening here in Nottingham. We are also aiming to promote core messages of UoN as an inclusive local employer and encourage local women to come and work with us.

I’m in! How do I take part?
Please get in touch with Natalie Lewis as soon as possible, but by Friday 14 February at the latest, with as much information as possible about you and your team, your proposed activity, space requirements and any equipment needed.

Headliner Victory for Women’s Water Polo

January 30th, 2020

On Wednesday 29 January, Nottingham hosted the second Headliner event of the academic year.

Our girl’s Water Polo team went up against Warwick for an intense 4 quarters and came out on top with the final score resting at 33-5 to Nottingham.

We had an excellent start to the game with Nottingham scoring 3 goals in the first few minutes. The 1st quarter finished 12-2 to Nottingham after some confident saves by our Nottingham goalie, Rhona Savin, and an excellent score by Rachael Lewin with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.

Nottingham’s strong defence created 3 turnovers in the 2nd quarter after Warwick could not get past the #GreenandGold defensive line. Another goal was scored by Lewin with only 4 seconds on the clock to close the first half, 17-4 to Nottingham.

Half time saw an excellent performance by UoN Sport’s Synchronised Swimming club, hyping up the crowd for the final half of the game.

Nottingham took the ball with style into the 3rd quarter. They continued the quarter with top class saves from Nottingham goalie, Savin once again. Alex Bryant also had a smashing goal in the final quarter, raising Nottingham’s score to 28-4 going into the final quarter.

Crowds were full off support after a high-scoring game and were confident in the #GreenandGold to secure a victory. After some intense game play, the final quarter finished with Warwick smashing the ball into the back of the net just as the horn sounded. This left the final score at an amazing 33-5 to Nottingham!

We caught up with our Water Polo captain, Abigail Turner, about how she felt the game went; “I think it went really well, the score board reflects how we played in the water. It shows the teams we are going to play against in the future that we are not here to mess around.”

Speaking about performing at the Headliner; “It was such a great opportunity for Water Polo! It means so much to us, especially as a female team it is such an amazing opportunity.”

Abbie also spoke to us about the goals she wants for the future of the water polo team;

“I want to get us into the premier league. We were disappointed last year but I think we’ve got such a strong chance this year especially getting a goal difference at fixtures like this. There’s no reason for us not to be there.”

Rachel Lewin, player No.2, was awarded player of the match after scoring so many amazing goals and continuous top-class game play. Speaking about how she felt the game went;

“It went really well. I have to give my hat off to Warwick, being a new team coming here can be really intimidating and I think they held their heads the whole time and never gave up. As we’ve seen from this match our team is pretty well developed. I think we have some progress to make that will eventually get us into the premier league.”

Looking forward to the rest of the season, Head Coach, Sam Joyce said; “We changed up the team a bit during the game, so everyone got good match time. I am really pleased with the whole team performance. This is all part of the pathway we will be building on towards March for BUCS Big Wednesday here in Nottingham and hopefully the premiership play-offs as well.”

The Nottingham Women’s team will continue their season in BUCS Tier 1 and will be aiming to progress through the Trophy stages to play at home again in the BUCS Big Wednesday Final, on Wednesday 25th March 2020.

LGBT History Month at the University of Nottingham

January 29th, 2020

February 2020 will once again see the marking of UK Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans (LGBT) History Month at the University of Nottingham.

This year’s LGBT History Month will take place from Saturday 1 February to Saturday 29 February.

As in previous years, a variety of events will take place around the University during LGBT History Month. These are free to attend and open to everyone.

Our events programme includes:

Film Screening/Q&A: The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye
Thursday 6 February, 6.30pm-8.30pm
A30 Lecture Theatre, Arts Centre
Event link: https://watermelonwoman.eventbrite.co.uk
Please note: This film contains scenes of a sexual nature, which some viewers may find disturbing. Attendees must be aged 18 or over

The Watermelon Woman is set in the ’90s and was made in 1996 in the days when video shops were popular and most people had a video recorder and played VHS videos. The film’s main Character is called Cheryl (played by Cheryl Dunye) who is a young black film-maker and works in a video hire shop with her friend Tamara. Cheryl takes an interest in black actresses from the 1930s and notices that they are often not in the credits and stereotypically are given the role of a servant. Cheryl investigates further why one particular actress (Fae) has only made one film. Her research leads Cheryl to think this actress might have been a lesbian. As well as her investigation, Cheryl meets a white woman called Diana, in the store, who flirts with Cheryl.  They have an affair and Tamara accuses Cheryl of wanting to be white.

Lecture and workshop: Decolonising queer spaces (in collaboration with UoNSU BME network)
Tuesday 11 February, 5.30pm-7.30pm
A17, Pope Building, University Park

Presented by Sara Khan (Access and Liberation Officer for the University of Manchester Students’ Union), this workshop is an interactive interrogation into colonalism and its’ influence on queer experiences. By thinking about positionality, we come to conclusions on how to build anti-racist, liberatory queer spaces with a focus on decolonisation.

Documentary Screening/Q&A with Angela Cooper
Invisible Women
Thursday 13 February, 6.30pm-8.30pm
A30 Lecture Theatre, Arts Centre
Event link: https://invisiblewomennottm.eventbrite.co.uk

Invisible Women is a short documentary that will tell the untold story of the North West’s LGBTQ past over the last 50 years through the lens of two women’s incredible journey of activism and rebellion. Angela Cooper and Luchia Fitzgerald have spent the last half a century fighting for their rights as women and as lesbians. Their work has revolutionised Manchester whilst transforming the lives of thousands of women and yet no record of them exists in the city’s archives; theirs is a story that risks disappearing from history.

Lecture/presentation and Q&A:
Cultures, Identities, Sexualities: what makes for an inclusive Higher Education space? A conversation for LGBT History Month with Dr Max Biddulph
Friday 14 February, 12.30pm-2.00pm
Room A33, Food Sciences Lecture Room, Sutton Bonington
Event link: https://cultures-identities-sexualities.eventbrite.co.uk

Reporting in 2018, Universities UK note that Higher Education in the UK has experienced consistent growth over the last decade with a change in the staff/student demographic to becoming progressively internationalized. In a parallel review, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA, 2017) note the polarization of attitudes towards gender and sexual minorities globally, with 72 countries criminalising same sex relations. What happens when this collision of people, faith, cultural diversity, values and attitudes inhabits the same higher education space? How can everyone get on and feel included?

Lecture/presentation and Q&A:
“This is who I am” by Ice and Fire – Organised by STAR

Monday 17 February, 6.30pm-9.30pm
Nottingham New Theatre, Cherry Tree Hill, University Park

Getting in Shape Director Appointed

January 27th, 2020

Director of Careers and Employability Dr Nalayini Thambar has been appointed as Director of the University’s Getting in Shape programme to provide senior leadership and direction for its activities across the institution.

Working in close partnership with academic and professional service colleagues, Getting in Shape: investing in our future  is a five-year programme to improve University processes, reduce complexity and generate further investment for our teaching, research, staff and students.

The programme started work in October 2019 and has already generated more than £3 million in savings from central printing, purchasing and service contracts to reinvest in teaching and research. Work is also underway to improve the University’s travel booking systems to make them cheaper, easier to use and better able to support environmental commitments.

From next month, Getting in Shape will support teams in faculties, schools and professional service areas to identify their priorities for improving contracts, services and processes across the institution.

Professor Sam Kingman, UEB sponsor for the programme said “I am very pleased that Nalayini is joining the team, the programme has made good progress and is poised to accelerate its benefits to all parts of the University. I look forward to working with Nalayini to make the University of Nottingham an even better place to work and learn.”

Nalayini said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the continuing success of the University of Nottingham in this role. Following the successful development of the University’s Careers and Employability activity and outcomes, I look forward to working with the Getting in Shape team and colleagues across the institution to reduce unnecessary complexity, realise the benefits of collaborative working and optimise our skills, expertise, experience, time and resources to support our collective ambitions. “

She will continue to provide overall leadership for the careers and employability agenda at the University, while the Careers and Employability Service management team continue to sustain the development and delivery of sector-leading services for our students and graduates.

Nalayini is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a qualified careers adviser, whose career has encompassed teaching, professional practice, project management and leadership across all areas of student employability.

Prior to joining the University of Nottingham, she was Assistant Director at the University of Leeds Careers Centre, responsible for business engagement and established and led a graduate retention project across the 10 universities in Yorkshire.

Following significant expansion of Nottingham’s UK Careers and Employability Service in 2013, Nalayini established the delivery of expert services to students within Faculties and Schools, and the development of non-clinical placement activity across the UK campus.

As Director of Quality for the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), Nalayini has introduced the first ever sector-owned professional standards and quality assurance process for careers and employability activity across UK higher education.

National Student Survey 2020

January 22nd, 2020

Final-year undergraduate students will be invited to complete this year’s National Student Survey (NSS) from Monday 27 January.

The NSS gives final-year undergraduate studnets across the country the opportunity to provide honest feedback about their experience at University. It consists of 27 questions covering teaching, learning, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, student voice and overall satisfaction.

The results of the NSS are calculated on a University-wide basis but can also be broken down to a school/department or course level. They are used to inform prospective students on the satisfaction rates between universities and courses, and also to make improvements to the student experience here at the University of Nottingham.

The survey takes just 10 minutes to complete and consists primarily of Likert scale questions with open-ended comments.

Staff support

For NSS results to be made publicly available, a threshold of both 10 respondents and a 50% response rate must be reached both across the institution, and in each course or school/department.

The University is therefore requesting the support of all staff in communicating the NSS to final-year students.

The majority of UK students report learning about the NSS directly from staff members, so lectures, seminars and personal tutor meetings are opportune moments to communicate.

Please note that there are stringent guidelines in place that provide parameters around the manner of our communications. You can find clear guidelines in the NSS Communications Presentation for Staff.

If you have any questions, or would like access to NSS promotional materials, please contact the NSS representative(s) in your area – if you are unsure of who these are, please email studentcommsoffice@nottingham.ac.uk.

A list of FAQs can be found on the NSS website, should students have any queries throughout the duration of the survey period.

Launching the communications campaign

The NSS has been live and available for students to complete since Monday 6 January.

However, we will not be launching our communications campaign until Monday 27 January to avoid interrupting the exam campaign, and ask that all staff comply with this date, unless otherwise agreed in advance. The campaign will run until Thursday 30 April.

January 21st, 2020
