Update from Professor Dame Jessica Corner
I am delighted to announce a series of town halls to update you on the development of our five-year research strategy.
We encourage our whole community – colleagues from all job families as well as researchers and staff who support research – to join us and help shape our vision for the future of research.
The virtual town halls follow the first steps of our university-wide consultation, where we asked colleagues to respond to a simple set of questions on the future of research at Nottingham.
We received 1,426 responses, which is excellent. Your insights are essential as we work together to deliver a new strategy for research.
Discover more about the consultation
The town halls will update you on the consultation so far, how to get further involved and plans including a series of workshops that will help shape how we prioritise and achieve our ambitions for research. There will also be an opportunity to ask a question.
There are five events, each geared towards one of our faculties. If you are unable to attend your faculty’s event, please feel free to express an interest in attending one that best suits you.
The town halls take place on:
Monday, 17 May 11am-noon – Faculty of Social Sciences
Tuesday, 18 May 10.30-11.30am – Medicine and Health Sciences
Tuesday, 25 May 11am-noon – Arts
Wednesday, 26 May 4-5pm – Science
Thursday, 27 May 3.30-4.30pm – Engineering
Please register your interest (before 5pm, Friday 14 May 2021). A Teams link will be sent to you during week commencing 10 May.
I will be joined by the relevant faculty Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at each of the town halls. Each faculty will also be contacting colleagues about the town halls.
We look forward to welcoming you. Thank you for taking the time to help shape our future.
Jessica

The university would like to remind its European staff who are EU, EEA or Swiss nationals, that the deadline for applying to the EU Settlement Scheme is 30 June 2021.
This applies to any EU, EEA or Swiss nationals who have been living in the UK before 11pm on 31 December 2020.

During March, the university held its first ever virtual diversity festival
Our first ever virtual diversity festival was a real success with over 5,000 visitors to our web hub and more than 1,500 attendees at the 40 or so live events. Feedback included:
“An absolute joy to work for an organisation that is championing diversity in all forms. Bravo!”
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the events so far. They have been varied and interesting and I have found the online, virtual nature of the festival more inclusive and easy to access.”
“Excellent events all round. I’ve attend around 6 sessions and all have been well organised and relevant. Thank you to all involved.”
In case you couldn’t join in, below are highlights of some of our featured activities and events:
Celebrating diversity
Pre-recorded performances and interviews with diverse musicians and influencers celebrating diversity including conversations with Gilles Peterson, BBC 6 Music DJ and record collector. These recordings were captured in partnership with University Radio Nottingham, Lakeside Arts and the Nottingham Global Roots Festival.
Having challenging conversations
Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West CBE and Chancellor, Baroness Young OBE reflect on their own experiences of challenging conversations in a fireside chat facilitated by Dr Max Biddulph.
Painters, sharks and crimson waves
A panel discussion exploring period inequality and stigma that is often associated with menstruation, chaired by Stacy Johnson MBE, featuring Nadia Whittome MP, Moss Mitson and Dr Supriya Garikipati.
Impact of Covid-19 on minority groups
A panel discussion, chaired by Dr Mohamed Elmaghrbi, showcasing the latest research on how Covid-19 has impacted on minority groups and exploring how the University can use this to inform its strategies and policies.
Caring for carers
A 60 minute workshop, chaired by June McCombie and supported by Obianuju Amamgbo (alumna) and Ayaan Hersi, work coaches at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), providing practical advice on the support and benefits available for staff, student and alumni carers.
Five ways to wellbeing expo

The University of Nottingham is committed to embedding a culture of research integrity and good research practice across the university.
To support this, our Research Ethics and Integrity pages have been refreshed, with new resources aimed at research ethics committees in schools, departments and faculties.
These now include a dedicated Code of Practice for Research Ethics Committees for projects involving human participants. The university’s Research Integrity and Research Ethics Committee has also produced guidance on ethics for research projects involving animals.
Professor Gowland, chair of the University Research Integrity and Research Ethics Committee, said “I am delighted that we now have an aligned approach for Research Ethics Review processes across the University of Nottingham to strengthen our research integrity and ethics infrastructure.”
“I am grateful to the UK Research Integrity Office, research ethics committee members and all support teams who contributed to the development of this code.”
It is expected that all University of Nottingham Research Ethics Committees will follow these guidelines.
Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange said: “All staff and students will also find these codes and guidance will benefit them immensely in planning research projects and by providing a clear understanding of the review criteria used to assess research projects.”
The code was written to allow discipline-appropriate procedures to be implemented where appropriate. Research Ethics Committees should continue to be independent in forming their opinions, and these guidelines are designed to ensure alignment of process and governance.
The code applies to all University of Nottingham campuses, with exceptions for China and Malaysia campuses to be managed locally.
For any queries please contact the Head of Research Integrity via email Ali.alshukry@nottingham.ac.uk

Libraries have extended the opening times of six libraries to 2am (Sunday – Thursday) for the summer term.
With the summer assessment period on the horizon, Libraries have extended the opening times of all libraries, except Music. The libraries will stay open until 2am from Sunday to Thursday to allow more time for individual, silent study.
From 9pm – 2am, library study space is available without advance booking. At all other times, library study space must still be booked in advance using Click and Study.
Library staff are available until 9pm to answer any questions about access to resources or facilities. After this time, the library spaces are monitored by Octavian Security.
We ask that you visit our libraries to use study space or access resources only when essential – for example, if you don’t have access to appropriate study space elsewhere.
It is expected that the extended opening times will be available for the duration of the summer term. Find out more on the Libraries’ website.
Help us to provide a safe study environment at all times by following the essential Covid-19 safety measures in place in our libraries.
Anyone failing to follow the safety measures will be asked to leave the library and will be unable to book study space for seven days. Failure to follow the safety measures is a breach of the Code of Discipline for Students.
It’s important to look after your health and wellbeing whilst studying, including taking regular breaks, eating healthy food and getting plenty of sleep.
Whilst libraries are staying open until 2am, we recommend starting your studies as early as possible, setting yourself an achievable target for your study session and getting some rest once complete.
For the moment, food cannot be eaten in the library so it may be helpful to schedule your study sessions around meals.
If you have any questions about library opening times or other services, please contact Libraries via email, phone or live chat.
