Climate change: a university determined to make a difference

November 21st, 2022

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West reflects on COP27 and says to tackle the greatest challenge of our time we must accelerate the delivery of sustainable technologies and solutions.

As world leaders, ministers and negotiators return from COP27, we know that any further failure to deliver urgent action on climate change will push us deeper into extraordinarily dangerous territory.

The 27th UN conference on climate change took place in a year of record temperatures and extreme weather events, with devastating floods in Pakistan and Australia, wildfires in Europe and catastrophic storms in the USA and southeast Asia.

The United Nations warned delegates in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, that collective failure to act on greenhouse gas emissions was rapidly dashing any hope of limiting the rise in global temperatures to 1.5C.

Beyond this tipping point, climate disaster will accelerate, and our planet could be irredeemably damaged. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that failure to prevent average temperatures rising by more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels will expose half the world’s population to life-threatening heat and humidity.

COP27 saw a welcome focus on supporting adaptation and resilience on the conference’s host continent and other areas of the world most at risk. In east Africa today, 20 million people are facing food insecurity because of unprecedented drought, and populations in highly vulnerable regions are already 15 times more likely to die due to floods, droughts, and storms.

Future generations will ask us: what did you do to avert such catastrophes?

The future is too uncertain to risk an answer at this time, but at the University of Nottingham we are doing our utmost to make a difference. We are committed to making outstanding contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses our commitment to secure a fairer, more secure world: delivering zero carbon technologies,  building partnerships with industry to scale up and drive transformational change, putting sustainability at the heart of all university operations, and inspiring our graduates and postgraduates as globally-minded citizens and change-makers.

The delivery of sustainable technologies is vital if the UK is to achieve its 2050 net zero target. Our emerging zero carbon research and innovation cluster will create a regional hub, where we will work with our partners in industry to turn discoveries made in the lab or workshop into innovative products and services.  We will scale up the delivery of these to homes, business, and society. This cluster will support change, generate regional economic benefit and place the UK at the forefront of sustainable innovation.

Our investment in the Power Electronics and Machines Centre will help deliver this vision. The PEMC hosts the Driving the Electric Revolution Industrialisation Centre – Midlands and the world-leading 20MW UK Electrification of Aerospace Propulsion Facility, together with the first independent business unit established by a UK university for the industrialisation of electrical motors and drive systems.

These capabilities to develop, manufacture and test electrical motors will contribute to a revolution in the electrification of aviation and transport.

As a leading partner in Clean Sky 2, Europe’s largest ever aviation research programme, and with the support of partners including Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Leonardo, our ambition is to make the East Midlands the world’s foremost location for low-carbon aerospace innovation.

Our partnerships with government and industry will further widen the impact of our net zero research in areas such as green fuels and low-energy buildings.

Our engineers and university spinout Promethean Particles are pioneering bioenergy and carbon capture and storage processes at a North Yorkshire power station, while our research is helping the UK dairy industry reduce its carbon footprint by establishing the value of alternative, sustainable sources of protein in animal feed.

Our Energy Institute meanwhile draws on multidisciplinary expertise, and over 25 years has attracted significant funding from government and industry to address the challenges of transitioning to sustainable energy.

COP27 highlighted the importance of international partnerships and building the resilience of developing economies. In Indonesia, we are working with the Ministry of Transport to develop infrastructure for electric vehicles and support SMEs who are working to adapt conventional vehicles to electric propulsion. A new net zero translation centre in West Java will upskill industries to support the transition of Indonesia’s most populous province to a net zero economy, with an initial target of renewables meeting 20% of the energy needs of 50 million people by 2025.

Closer to home, sustainability informs every aspect of life and work on our campuses. The university has set ambitious, science-based carbon reduction targets: by 2030 to reduce our emissions by 63%, with an aspiration of net zero by 2040 and absolute zero by 2050.

To help us achieve this, we are actively working on solutions to reduce demand for energy, particularly in our building stock, and generate more of our own power; as well as focusing on our supply chains for food, paper, travel, construction materials, IT and lab equipment which together account for around 50% of our total annual scope 3 carbon emissions. We also aim to change our travel policies to reduce unnecessary travel, encourage lower carbon journeys and offset the cost of our travel on the environment.

We are also addressing the small but very meaningful changes in our day-to-day activity, for example by providing water refill points across campus to reduce the need for bottled water; partnering with Too Good to Go, an app that helps businesses sell surplus food and reduce food waste; and introducing carbon labelling on some of our menus to educate staff and students on the CO2 impact of their food choices.

Furthermore, we are supporting our friends and partners in their efforts, by backing the city of Nottingham’s ambition to be the UK’s first zero carbon city by 2028 and working with colleagues in China and Malaysia to improve sustainability in their regions.

The University of Nottingham is the world’s second most sustainable university, according to the UI Green Metric World University Ranking’s latest survey for 2021, and THE’s analysis of REF 2021 places us 7th in the UK for our research power, which takes into account the sustainability, quality, international impact and critical mass of our research.

The greatest challenge of our time remains simply enormous; however, we are determined to make our contribution and to work with our partners to meet this challenge head-on.

Take part in East Midlands devolution deal consultation

November 18th, 2022

Leaders of the four county and city councils in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Nottingham have secured an ambitious devolution deal with Government.

If implemented, the proposed devolution will see a historic transfer of powers and investment from Whitehall to our region.

It will give local control of at least £1.14 billion of funding to be spent on things that matter to the people who live in our region.

The proposal means decisions across key areas, such as better transport, skills, the economy, housing, and regeneration would be taken in the East Midlands by people who know and understand the region, bringing benefits for rural and urban communities and improvements to people’s quality of life.

It would also mean a directly elected mayor for Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Derby and Nottingham, with elections being held in May 2024.

A consultation is being held from 14 November 2022 to 9 January 2023 on the devolution deal and proposals for a directly elected regional mayor.

To take part please visit www.eastmidlandsdevolution.co.uk/have-your-say

More details can be found at www.eastmidlandsdevolution.co.uk

Internal Coach Pool now recruiting

November 18th, 2022

The Leadership and Management Academy is delighted to announce that applications for the Level 5 Excelling in Coaching Apprenticeship are open.

All permanently contracted staff from Professional Services Departments, Faculties and Schools and all job levels, from any job family can apply. We are particularly keen to expand the diversity of our coach pool, so would encourage those with protected characteristics to apply.

What does the Internal Coach Pool involve?

The Internal Coach Pool currently comprises a group of around 40 staff who are fully qualified to deliver coaching to staff across the University to help them achieve their goals within their roles.

We currently have 28 staff in training for the Level 5 Excelling in Coaching apprenticeship. You can view the full learning standards here Apprenticeship Coaching Professional (Level 5)

Why coaching?

Coaching is an effective way to help individuals discover their strengths, perform at their best and make decisions about their career that support their well-being and aspirations.

Here at the University of Nottingham coaching is an established part of the strategic approach to leadership, management and staff development.

By completing this qualification and becoming a member of the internal coach pool you will benefit from personal development as well as being able to have more of an impact in your work area as well as contributing towards our university Strategy of helping others achieve their full potential.

The Internal Coach Pool is supported by the university’s Leadership and Management Team and the Coaching Community of Practice.

How can I apply?

All permanent contracted members of staff in the university are eligible to complete an application form to become a coach in the Internal Coach Pool, regardless of their job family or level.

We encourage applications from the wide University population and recognise a range of skills and talent in our workforce.

Applicants must feel comfortable with the prospect of coaching people who may be working in a different area to themselves. Places are limited, so completing a application form is not a guarantee of a place on the programme and a shortlisting process will take place if we have more applications than there are places.

We will work closely with Senior Management Teams (SMTs) to reviewing applications from people from within their teams.  This is a demanding course with a number of commitments that must be carried out within working hours and so please discuss and gain full approval from your line manager prior to submitting your application.

You need to make sure you have support to dedicate the hours required to complete the programme, as well as the on-going coaching commitment in future years. The LMA will also ask a nominated Senior Manager from your work area to approve should you be shortlisted for a place on the course.

Full details on the requirements of the programme can be found here: Coaching Programme 2023 – 24

The deadline for applications to be agreed and submitted is 9 January 2023.

Successful nominees will commence training towards their L5 qualification in April 2023 with an onboarding process starting in February 2023.  They will be matched with their first coachees to work with as part of the programme in May – June 2023.

More information, all important documentation including the application form are available on the LMA Hub.

Influential academics are among the world’s most highly-cited researchers

November 17th, 2022

Seven University of Nottingham academics are among the world’s most highly cited researchers.

The prestigious Highly Cited Researcher list, which is collated by Web of Science to celebrate scientists and social scientists who demonstrate significant influence through publication of multiple papers.

Professor Neil Crout, Interim Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “I am delighted to once again celebrate the influence of our researchers, in this case those working in sciences and social sciences. It is also an opportunity to put this success in the context of our commitment to changing culture around publication metrics and supporting diversity.

“As signatories of DORA – the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment – the university is committed to avoiding journal-based metrics as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research articles, and considering the value and impact of all research outputs and a broad range of impact measures. Nevertheless, it is lovely to see our academics recognised  by Web of Science and Clarivate.”

Nottingham’s highly cited researchers are:

Simon Gosling, Professor of Climate Risk and Environmental Modelling, School of Geography [Pictured above]

You Tube hero professor recognised for contribution to local community

November 17th, 2022

University of Nottingham Professor and You Tube science hero, Sir Martyn Poliakoff, has been honoured for his contribution to his local community by being admitted as a new Freeman of the Borough of Broxtowe.

Sir Martyn was amongst seven local people honoured by Broxtowe Borough Council in recognition of his 40-year support in preserving the history and future development of Beeston and using his academic connections to bring people together to the benefit of the local community.

Sir Martyn has worked at the University of Nottingham for 43 years where he has taught and researched Chemistry. He is passionate about sharing scientific knowledge with and is well known worldwide as the lead presenter and cult hero of the You Tube hit science series – Periodic Table of Videos which started 13 years ago when scientists in the University of Nottingham’s School of Chemistry started collaborating with the renowned filmmaker Brady Haran. Their mission was to document every single one of the 118 chemical elements in a fun, lively and often unconventional way – they achieved this but continue to make videos!

The videos have grown to attract an international audience with more than 1.5 million subscribers with their videos attracting a total of more than 264 million views.

Alongside his University career and You Tube videos Sir Martyn has also been an involved and passionate member of this local community and belongs to several local organisations aiming to improve the area for residents.

He has been a member of Beeston District Civic Society for more than 40 years, where he has led community conversations about the future of Beeston and attracted a large and enthusiastic range of people to be interested in the future development of the town, in particular its sustainability. He is also an active member in Greening Beeston, a group of local people working to help fight climate change.

One of his most ambitious projects has been involvement in #Beeston2020Vision, an independent group of people inspired by the past and passionate about the future of Beeston. As a late addition to the Committee, he helped organise and chair the public meeting in April 2022 to discuss the ideas submitted by the community, which then led the Beeston2020Vision meeting with Broxtowe Borough Council.

Sir Martyn has also brought his passion for developing young people and building positive connections between students and the local area they live. He is also Vice-President of the Nottingham Wildlife Trust, helping build on the opportunities offered by the Attenborough Nature Reserve.

Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff said: “As a long-time resident of Broxtowe, I feel honoured and delighted to be recognized by my local community. I hope that this honour will help me to contribute towards making Beeston an even better place for everyone to live even in these challenging times”.

In 2008, Martyn was awarded a CBE for his services to science, followed by a Knighthood for services to Chemistry in 2015, and in 2021, a Nottingham tram was named after him. Broxtowe Borough Council is able to bestow the award of Honorary Alderman, Freeman of the Borough and Freedom of Entry on individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community. The titles of Honorary Alderman, Freeman and Freedom of Entry are the highest honours that this Council can bestow. This capability was granted to the Council when it received borough status in 1977.

Mayor of Broxtowe, Councillor David Grindell said: “Broxtowe is very lucky to have such an individual as Sir Martyn living in our Borough and being so actively involved in securing its future. This honour is truly deserved.”

Trent building to turn orange for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

November 17th, 2022

The university’s iconic Trent Building will be lit in orange on Friday 25 November 2022 as part of the United Nations 16 days of activism against gender-based violence – taking part from 25 November to 10 December 2022.

Trent Building will be joined by a number of organisations across Nottingham lighting up buildings in orange including both the City and County Council Houses, Nottingham Playhouse, Green’s Windmill and Wollaton Hall.

The global theme set by the UN Secretary General’s UNiTE campaign is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”.

Five years ago, the #MeToo movement, founded by activist Tarana Burke in 2006, exploded and sparked global mobilization creating a moment of urgency in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls.

Since then, unprecedented awareness and momentum have been created thanks to the relentless work of grassroots activists, women’s human rights defenders and survivor advocates worldwide to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.

At the same time, there has been a rise in anti-rights movements, including anti-feminist groups, resulting in shrinking space for civil society, a backlash against women’s rights organisations and a rise in attacks against women human rights defenders and activists.

Supporting and investing in strong, autonomous women’s rights organisations and feminist movements is key to ending violence against women and girls.

Our support is part of the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, supporting our community’s mental and physical wellbeing and prioritising the health, safety and security of our staff and students.

Visit our Vision: Research impact pages to read more about our research into misogyny against women and girls.

You can also read a blog by former PVC for EDI and People, Professor Sarah Sharples called Tackling misogyny, harassment and violence against women or take a look at our joint work to help protect women and girls by producing practical resource materials that are now freely available for general use.
