App wins UK leg of European competition

A new smartphone app that will help to guide stressed motorists through the trauma of a car accident, while potentially saving millions of pounds in fraudulent insurance claims has been recognised for its innovation.
The Accident Assessor app has won the UK leg of the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2011, hosted by GRACE (the GNSS Research and Applications Centre of Excellence) at The University of Nottingham.
The app, developed by Nottingham-based company InstantVue, provides calming messages for motorists, offers advice for staying safe at the scene of an accident and guides them through a step-by-step process of collecting the information they need to provide to their insurance company.

TARDIS trial hope for stroke sufferers

People who suffer from acute stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA, a mini stroke) could get better treatment in the future thanks to the potential expansion of a large clinical trial of a new combination of drugs led by researchers at the University.
The TARDIS trial is testing the safety, tolerability and effectiveness of an intensive blood thinning therapy involving a combination of three drugs instead of the one or two that are normally prescribed.
The scientists have recruited more than 550 patients with stroke or TIA from across the UK but now hope to expand the trial to include up to 4,200 patients worldwide. They believe that by using three anti-platelet drugs (the combination of aspirin, clopidogrel and dipyridamole) instead of the one or two used now, the effects of the stroke and chances of recurrence could be greatly reduced.

Science champion takes up new post

A science champion who will work to promote the value of studying chemistry — and open people’s eyes to the impact it has on the world around us — has taken up a new post at The University of Nottingham.
Heidi Dobbs is now regional co-ordinator for the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). She will support the RSC’s activities in the region and raise the profile of the educational resources it offers.
Heidi said: “My job title is co-ordinator but I think of myself as of a chemistry ‘fixer’. My role is all about developing networks and providing resources to, and links between people with a passion for chemistry education — whether they are teachers, students, academics or professional scientists from industry.”

Southern Street

December 20th, 2011

Stefan Boness’ exhibition runs from Wednesday 16 November to Sunday 5 February 2012 at the Angear Visitors Centre. Admission is free.
Southern Street forms a poignant companion piece to the Lowry exhibition. It documents a row of Victorian terraced houses in Salford prior to its demolition as part of a contentious government urban renewal programme.
Despite the uniformity of the architecture, Boness shows us the individuality imprinted on each abandoned house by the people who once lived there.

Tate & Lyle signs exclusive deal

December 20th, 2011

Tate & Lyle has signed an exclusive, worldwide licence agreement with Eminate Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The University of Nottingham, for its unique salt reduction technology.
The product, currently known as SODA-LO®, enables added salt levels to be reduced by up to 30 per cent in foods such as bread, pizza bases, pastry, savoury pie fillings, cheese and baked snacks.
SODA-LO® is an innovative clean label salt product that enables salt content to be reduced in food without loss of flavour or structure.
Under the license agreement, Tate & Lyle will assume responsibility for commercialising the SODA-LO® salt reduction technology on a global basis including manufacturing, product development, sales and marketing.
Several well-known food manufacturers, primarily in the UK and USA, are already using SODA-LO®. Tate & Lyle plans to commence a global roll-out of the product in 2012.
Karl Kramer, President of Innovation and Commercial Development at Tate & Lyle said: “The SODA-LO® salt reduction technology is an excellent addition to Tate & Lyle’s Health & Wellness offering. Salt reduction is a high-profile priority for many of our customers who are committed to formulating reduced salt products to meet growing consumer demand.”
Neil Davidson, Chairman of Eminate Ltd, said: “This is a significant deal for Eminate Ltd and we are delighted that Tate & Lyle is working with us and The University of Nottingham to fully commercialise our novel salt reduction technology. Tate & Lyle’s relationships with global food companies and its technical and applications development expertise and resources, will help both parties to maximise commercial value from this exciting technology.”
This technology partnership was assessed and developed by Tate & Lyle’s Open Innovation team, part of its Innovation and Commercial Development group. The Open Innovation team utilises its global network to develop partnerships with universities, customers and start-ups specialising in food science with the goal of successfully bringing their new technologies and products to market.
