Meningitis alert

November 18th, 2015

The following advice is issued as a result of a confirmed case of meningitis involving a student resident at Raleigh Park.

The meningococcal bacteria lives in the nose and throat and is only passed on by prolonged intimate contact. The University has worked with local Public Health Doctors and has already identified and traced very close contacts (eg hall residents who have shared a room or kitchen with the affected person) who have been given prophylactic antibiotics. Anyone with more casual contact should be at no greater risk of catching this disease than a member of the general public and does not require treatment.

Members of the University are advised to be especially vigilant over the next few days. The important thing to know is that the disease can develop very rapidly, sometimes within a matter of hours. Early symptoms may be similar to those you get with a flu or hangover:

• feeling feverish
• vomiting
• severe headache
• stiff neck, back and joint pains

If you feel unwell, and your fever or pain symptoms are not relieved by paracetamol or aspirin, you must consult a doctor. Let a friend know you are unwell and ask them to visit you regularly.

If any of the following symtoms develop, get medical help urgently by phoning 111 (free from any phone), as early treatment saves lives:

• rash of tiny red bruises that do not fade under pressure
• severe dislike of light
• disorientation or drowsiness

If you need further information or advice, contact your GP or phone 111 or access one of the following meningitis information websites:

Phishing emails – don’t get caught out

November 18th, 2015

This morning the IT Service Desk was alerted to a Phishing attack on staff and student email addresses.

A Phishing campaign is an email that prompts you to provide personal details or log-in credentials so the attacker can shut down or falsely use your online accounts (banking, email, social media etc). The University will never contact you in this way and will never ask for you to provide your username, password or bank details.

Visit the IT Network blog for tips on how to avoid these attacks.

Professor Christine Ennew goes bald for cancer awareness

November 18th, 2015

Professor Christine Ennew, CEO and Provost of The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC), has shaved her head in the name of cancer awareness.

Prof Ennew pledged to to go bald if RM 20,000 was raised as part of the Jom Botak campaign organised by Ace Society of UNMC and MAKNA, and carried out this promise on Tuesday 17 November in the Student Association Circle after the target was reached.

Prof Ennew said, “Our students have been fundraising to help MAKNA enhance treatment and support for cancer suffers from disadvantaged backgrounds giving them the best possible chance to fight this devastating disease. They have worked tremendously hard and I wanted to offer them my support in the best way I could. It’s a small price to pay to be able to raise so much to support this important cause.”

The “Jom Botak” campaign is running for the fourth year in UNMC to raise funds, to increase awareness and to show support to cancer patients throughout Malaysia. This year the campaign ran from 28 October to 5 November.

“We have raised over RM 20,000 with money continuing to come in, and on November 5 we were thrilled to get our CEO on board towards this pledge,” said He Manli, the Organising Chairperson of Jom Botak and second year international business management student at UNMC.

Several staff members and students also got their heads shaved as part of this campaign while others donated towards the individual pledges.

Dr Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz, who went bald and is also growing a beard in conjunction with Movember, said: “I was very pleased to participate in this initiative by MAKNA and UNMC’s student association. In Malaysia there is a risk that 15 percent of people would suffer from cancer before the age of 75. Early cancer diagnosis saves many lives. For this reason, awareness and campaigns like Jom Botak are very important.”

After having her head shaved, Prof Ennew said: “At the University we are hugely supportive of initiatives which are student led and bring benefits to our broader community, so losing hair, which will soon grow is something is really not too difficult to do.” Professor Ennew received the cheers and support by the many students and staff who gathered to witness the bold show of support towards those affected by cancer.

The Jom Botak campaign involved a “Go Bald Auction” which was opened for members of staff and students at UNMC. Jom Botak simply means to go bald, an initiative by MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional) to get involved in the fight against cancer. The participants were required to be included in an auction list with a pre determined price tag. When the said auction amount had been reached, the participant shaved his or her head.

You can donate online until Monday 30 November.

In other news, Professor Ennew recently announced that she would be leaving The University of Nottingham to take up the post of Provost at Warwick University – read our article for the full story.

NUSA moves out of ‘special measures’

November 18th, 2015

Improvements at Nottingham University Samworth Academy (NUSA) have lifted the school out of special measures, according to the latest inspection by Ofsted.

NUSA was placed in special measures in the autumn of 2013 and the leadership team and staff have worked hard to improve all aspects of the school. The outcome of this inspection is a welcome confirmation that the strategies put in place by the sponsors (The University of Nottingham and the Samworth Trust) and the Torch Academy Gateway Trust (who operate the school as education partners), have had a real impact.

The conclusion of an Ofsted Inspection at the Bilborough school on October 20-21 was that “Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector is of the opinion that the school no longer requires special measures”.

Mark Watts, Head of School, said: “We are delighted that Ofsted have moved the school out of special measures. This judgement is testament to the immense hard work that staff and students have displayed over the last two years.

“With the unwavering support of the sponsors and directors we have undertaken an ambitious and focused programme of school improvement. Every aspect of the school’s operation has been reviewed and our unrelenting focus on teaching and learning has begun to bear fruit.

“We would agree with Ofsted when they categorise the school as ‘Requiring Improvement’. We believe we have only just started a journey that will eventually create a school at NUSA that realises the ambitions of all its students and challenges the young people of Bilborough to achieve their true potential.”

Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience at The University of Nottingham, said: “This is very welcome news for the students, staff and leadership team and it’s fantastic that all the improvements at NUSA have been formally recognised. NUSA has come a long way in the last two years, and we look forward to working with the school as it continues to improve.”

There were many positives contained within the inspection report which placed the school in the ‘Requires Improvement’ category.

John Tomasevic, CEO of the Torch academy Gateway Trust concluded: “This outcome validates the direction of travel the Torch Academy Gateway Trust Group has set out in partnership with the NUSA Trust for the long term prosperity and wellbeing of the students who attend the academy. Whilst we recognise there is still a long way to go to build an outstanding school we are confident that we now have the foundations to deliver this vision.”

Headline Strengths

  • The head of school, deputy headteacher and other senior leaders have transformed the culture and aspirations of the academy; there is increasing evidence of impact of their actions in pupils’ achievement and behaviour and in the quality of teaching.
  • Achievement in English is consistently good.
  • Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make good progress.
  • Vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils are well supported and cared for.
  • Pupils’ conduct, manners and attitudes towards one another are usually respectful.
  • Partners and sponsors have enhanced the quality of the curriculum, teaching and continuous professional development across the academy.

Leadership and Management

  • The executive headteacher, head of school and other senior leaders have been successful in bringing about order and stability to the academy. Management systems are clear and simple. Staff, parents and pupils have high levels of confidence in the leadership of the academy.
  • The academy ethos of ‘Work Hard: Be Kind’ is reinforced and realised through consistent messages and the professional conduct of all members of staff.
  • The academy’s partnerships and sponsors, specifically the University of Nottingham and the Torch Academy Gateway Trust, have made a significant difference to improving the quality of teaching and leadership across the academy.
  • Leaders have rightly given top priority to improving the quality of teaching. The range of training and development programmes available to staff is wide, well thought-out and tailored to teachers’ levels of experience. Teachers also have good opportunities to learn from best practice outside the academy.

Quality of Teaching and Learning

  • The teaching of English is a strength of the academy.
  • The quality of teaching is consistently good or better in a range of subjects including Spanish, physical education and practical and vocational subjects. In physical education, there are high levels of engagement and participation because teachers meticulously plan activities which are interesting and stretching. In the social sciences, including child development and health and social care, teachers ensure that work is carefully planned and they provide pupils with expert guidance to help them make progress.
  • Support and guidance for pupils with disabilities and special educational needs is exemplary. In particular, support staff in the academy’s specialist provision for pupils with hearing impairment are very skilled and effective.

Behaviour

  • Pupils’ behaviour in the classroom and around the academy is now calm, orderly and respectful. There is very little low-level disruption to learning.
  • Pupils’ attitudes towards learning are also improving. An example of this is that pupils’ attendance at after-school clubs and revision sessions is high, even when they are on Saturdays.

The University brand – join the conversation!

November 17th, 2015

A few weeks ago a number of key stakeholders were invited to take part in a survey about the University to inform a brand perceptions study we are currently engaged with.

Thank you to the 3,180 people who responded to the survey and those who took part in the depth interviews earlier in the year – you have given us lots to consider and have made a great contribution to the next phase of the project.

Next steps

Now we would like to show you some of the ideas that have been generated from the research so far and ask for your feedback. It’s an online consultation where you can take part in activities which should be fun and interesting to do.

This will take place between 30 November and 11 December 2015 and anyone connected with the University is welcome to register their interest in taking part.

How do I take part?

If you are interested in taking part in this exercise, please register your interest here. This should take no more than a minute.

Once registered, you will receive an email when the online consultation is open inviting you to participate. It will take around 20 minutes of your time to give us your views and you will really help to shape how the University presents itself in the future.
