The first call is now open for antimicrobial resistance awards of up to £15,000 each.
Bridging the Gaps, a programme recently funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), is offering these awards to researchers interested in developing discipline bridging activities in antimicrobial resistance research such as feasibility studies, collaborative travel and secondments. The awards are worth up to £15,000 each and a budget of £57,600 is available for this first call.
The visiting scholars programme is also open for applications. Funding is available to cover travel, accommodation and a subsistence allowance for a two month period for four visiting scholars.
The basic criteria is for all proposals to involve an applicant from the engineering and physical sciences side and another from the biomedical side. Applicants from other areas eg the social sciences are welcome to be involved, provided this criteria is met. Consideration should be made as to the benefit of the proposed activity to the antimicrobial resistance community at Nottingham and the potential to generate further activity, funding and collaboration.
Both applications have a deadline of Thursday 14 January.
Supporting documents and application forms are available on the Bridging the Gaps website, under ‘Funding’.
For more information, please contact Harry Moriarty at h.moriarty@nottingham.ac.uk

Give an extra gift this Christmas and help us to fund life-saving research for children affected by deadly brain tumours.
Our Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre is aiming to raise £50,000 during December to fund a clinical trial into a pioneering treatment that targets cancer cells but without some of the unwanted side effects that can lead to life-changing disabilities for children who survive brain tumours.
The centre is pioneering the use of a new intrathecal drug delivery system that injects chemotherapy drugs directly into the spinal fluid or brain. Administering the drugs in this way targets tumours more effectively at a fraction of the toxicity, reducing the chance of nasty side effects for the patient.
While significant work has been done pre-clinically, the research is at a critical stage and needs vital funds to allow it to move forward to begin recruiting patients for phase one clinical trials. The appeal will support the appointment of a clinical researcher to work on the study and the materials required for the next phase of the project.
Verity Oliver is mum to Connor who has been treated at the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre since being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 when he was just 11 years old.
She said: “I’ve watched my son deal with the effects of the chemo – the pain, the sickness, the stunted growth. I’m sure you will agree that’s more than any child should have to go through.
“This research gives me hope that one day my son could be able to live without the constant fear of having another tumour discovered. For me – and so many other mothers in my position – that would be the greatest Christmas gift of all.”
Donations to the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre’s Christmas Appeal can be made online at nott.ac.uk/childrenbtr or by calling +44 (0)115 951 3627.

A familiar face to staff and students has been recognised at this year’s UK Bus Awards.
Phil Rowson, driver of the 34 bus, picked up the Bronze Medal at this year’s UK Bus Awards in the ‘Top National Bus Driver’ category – making him officially the third best bus driver in the whole of the UK.
Nottingham City Transport‘s Orange Uni 34 bus links University Park Campus to the city centre and is used by hundreds of University staff and students every day. Known for his warm, friendly attitude and enthusiasm for learning the native languages of international student passengers, Phil was named NCT’s ‘Driver of the Year’ in January 2015 which saw him shortlisted for the UK awards.
Beaten to the top spot by Denis McMahon from Abelio Surrey in silver, and Carole Hind from trentbarton with gold, Phil was gracious to the last – offering congratulations to his fellow drivers who made the podium.
Phil said: “Denis and Carole fully deserve this recognition from the UK Bus Awards and I’d like to say a big congratulations to both of them – especially Carole who will be bringing the award back to Nottingham which is great news for our city!”
UK Bus Awards chairman Tony Depledge commented: “Every one of the 400 entrants has a good story to tell; all the finalists deserve their nominations, every Gold, Silver and Bronze winner is a lesson and an inspiration”.
