The Universities of Nottingham, Oxford and Warwick are leading ‘blue sky’ research into artificially-intelligent medical devices that will improve treatment for cancer and intensive care patients and those with chronic wounds.
The future technologies will continuously monitor critically-ill patients and administer medicines or adjust treatment automatically, using feedback from built-in sensors. The aim is to provide more personalised, accurate and timely care and, ultimately, to save lives.
For the next three years, Professor Stephen Morgan, from the Faculty of Engineering at Nottingham, will head up a network of experts in healthcare technologies, sensing, clinical care, control and modelling to identify potentially innovative clinical tools and approaches.
Over 100,000 patients are admitted to intensive care units in the UK per year. Survivors of critical illness commonly have a care requirement post-discharge from hospital and many experience reduced cognitive function.
Meanwhile, a substantial proportion of the worldwide burden of cancer could be prevented with early detection and better treatment. Similarly, 200,000 patients in the UK have a chronic wound with the cost to the NHS conservatively estimated at £3bn per year, around three per cent of the total estimated expenditure on health. With proper diagnosis and treatment, much of this burden could be avoided.
Professor Morgan said: “The advent of massive computer power, highly sensitive, specific and flexible sensors, and precisely delivered treatments has finally allowed closed-loop control systems to offer a revolutionary leap in medical treatment.
“The intensive care unit, for instance, provides a highly controlled and technology-friendly environment that favours the development of closed loop control and so there are excellent opportunities to make rapid progress in optimising treatment and advancing the proposed technology.”

A group of students and alumni from The University of Nottingham Ningbo (UNNC) are set to take on the world at Ultimate Frisbee.
The group will compete at the World Flying Disc Federation 2016 World Ultimate and Guts Championships in London as part of the China and Hong Kong teams. Three alumni from UNNC are also volunteering at the event which takes place between 19 and 25th June and will see 120 teams from more than 40 countries compete.
The team is being captained by Zhixing Xue who was taught to play Ultimate Frisbee by Gordon Thomas who first introduced the sport to students in Ningbo between 2004 and 2006.
Now nine players, including Wanshu Qu and Shengyi Zhao who are on courses that divide their time between UNNC and The University of Nottingham, will complete in the China Mixed team and two players will complete for the Hong Kong Mixed teams. The success of the students at UNNC has grown since four of them competed in the 2012 Championships.
Zhixing said: “We are very excited to be coming to the UK to play in the championships- especially with such a large number of UNNC students and alumni. There are so many benefits to playing Ultimate – it is free, open and fun. All players including opponents are very friendly on and off the field. We have learnt how to work as a team, respect our teammates and our opponents. We love the community and treat it as our family even after we have graduated.”
Ultimate is a non-contact sport played by two teams of seven players. The object of the game is for a team to pass the Frisbee disc from player to player, all the way up the field, and catch the disc in their end-zone, which scores a point. Players cannot run with the disc.

The UEB-approved schedule for the phased implementation of the University’s new student administration system, Campus Solutions, is now available.
Following the decision to phase, colleagues in IS, Student Services, External Relations, Finance, SPP, LRLR and Project Transform have developed the schedule, below which allows us to implement our new student administration system while offering colleagues across all locations the support they need to transition to this new way of working. It also allows the UK team to focus on delivering an excellent experience to our new and returning students this September.
August 2016
September 2016
December 2016 – January 2017
February – April 2017
July – August 2017
The proposed phasing is based on information currently available and assumes the system will be ready in October 2016. It offers the benefits of a single campus implementation first, from which lessons can be learned and stabilisation achieved. Colleagues are now working up detailed plans to enable delivery – these will be shared when ready.
For more information on the changes taking place over the next year, visit the Project Transform blog and Workspace.

What better place to enjoy a picnic than the beautiful landscaped grounds of University Park? Throw in live music and a host of free activities and you’ve got a perfect way to spend a summer’s afternoon.
Picnic in the Park takes place between noon and 3pm on Sunday 26 June in the Millennium Garden, University Park.
As well as performances by the award-winning Newstead Brass Band, there’ll be face-painting, rocket-making with an environmental artist and a children’s nature quest trail. You can find out more about the rich biodiversity of the campus by trying pond-dipping between 1pm and 2pm.
David Beadle, University Park’s Grounds Manager and a member of the Friends of University Park, said: “University Park is one of Nottingham’s green jewels and we’re proud to invite members of the public and the wider community to enjoy our lovely grounds and gardens with us.”
Refreshments are also available and the nearby Orchard Hotel has a bar and restaurant. You could also extend your day with a visit to the exhibitions and café at Nottingham Lakeside Arts.
Use any of campus entrances and follow signs to the ‘park event’. Admission and parking are free. If you would like to help with the Picnic or require further information, call David Beadle, Grounds Manager, on 0115 951 3605 or email david.beadle@nottingham.ac.uk

Eight sports. Three Campuses. One University.
Let the Tri Campus Games begin! Running from Sunday 12 to Friday 17 June at the University’s Malaysia Campus, the games bring together students from the three University of Nottingham campuses (UK, China and Malaysia) to compete against each other in a week-long festival of sport.
The Tri Campus Games were first hosted in University Park Campus in 2009, and take place at a different one of the University’s international campuses each year, involving nearly 200 student athletes from over 20 different nations. Underpinned by the ethos ‘friendship through sport’, the games offer a fantastic opportunity for sporting and educational exchange in the friendly spirit of competition. Ten sports will be played ranging from basketball, football and tennis, to badminton, Ultimate Frisbee and squash. All will include both men’s and women’s (or mixed) teams. Each of the international campuses sends 60 students to compete in the games. Get a glimpse into the athletes’ thoughts by reading an introductory blog post from Ellie Hill, Team UK Volleyball player.
We will have daily updates and reports on the Sport at UoN blog, and you can also find UoN Sport on Twitter and Facebook.
Keep up to date with every goal, point and basket by following #TCG2016 on social media – and make sure you use the hashtag to let us know what you think!

The University of Nottingham’s School of Veterinary Medicine & Science is a 2016 Award winner within the Aspire Scheme (the programme to recognise international excellence in medical, dental and veterinary schools supported by Association for Medical Education in Europe) for Student Engagement.
This is a testament to the hard work of the staff and student body, as demonstrated by the fantastic application put to the scheme by Liz Mossop, Karen Braithwaite, Catrin Rutland and Janika Patel.
The School will be presented with the ASPIRE trophy at the AMEE 2016 International Conference in Medical Education in Barcelona, Spain on Monday 29 August 2016, when about 3,500 teachers and leaders in health professions education from around the world will be present.
