The Life Cycle 6 endurance bike ride will set off from Lizard Point in Cornwall on 19 August, finishing 16 days later at Dunnet Head in Scotland. The ride covers 1,400 miles, taking in the four compass points of mainland Britain to help raise £1 million for breast cancer research here at the University.

EU Task Force update

August 10th, 2016

The University has been preparing to respond to potential outcomes from the EU Referendum since the date for the vote was announced in February 2016. Following the outcome of the vote, an EU Task Force chaired by Professor Karen Cox, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, has been leading on our strategy to deal with all potential issues related to Brexit, and Europe more broadly.

The Task Force is responsible for activity around staff and student engagement, fees, funding, research and knowledge exchange, partnerships, communications, student recruitment and mobility. Scroll down for the full membership. The EU Task Force remit is to:

  • prepare for medium and longer-term implications and impacts
  • identify risks (and mitigations) and opportunities
  • manage the University’s internal/external communications and responses
  • consider the strategic implications
  • identify lobbying responses

The Task Force’s first response has been to communicate with staff, with our current students and with our prospective students. For a list of communications, visit the EU Referendum webpages.

A number of events took place in July, including an open forum for EU and EEA staff, and a separate forum for postgraduate researchers. In addition, Human Resources ran seminars with expert legal advice on immigration issues, and workshops focused around skills for wellbeing for those concerned about potential changes following the Referendum. More seminars and workshops have been organised for the future.

The Task Force continues to gather intelligence from within and outside the University about impacts of an EU Exit. Members of the Task Force are actively working with Nottingham City and County Councils, the local police, the NHS and other local groups on public engagement.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Greenaway has recorded a video message outlining how the University is responding to the result of the EU Referendum. Watch the video.

As Chair of the Russell Group, Sir David is working closely with other Russell Group Universities as well as with UUK and with Government and ministers to ensure they fully understand the consequences and opportunities for the University and the sector.

In addition to the Task Force, Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, is leading an EU Referendum Expert Advisory Group.

We will continue to keep you updated on our activity in the wake of the EU Referendum, and updates will follow as information becomes available. You can also read an update regarding staff and student international mobility support.

For more information, visit the University’s EU Referendum information and guidance website. If you have any queries or wish to feed in issues or concerns, please contact eu-support@nottingham.ac.uk. Students can make enquiries by emailing europe-team@nottingham.ac.uk

National Student Survey 2016 results

August 10th, 2016

The University of Nottingham’s results for the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS) are in. The results are the University’s best to date and its strongest year-on-year improvement since the NSS began in 2005.

University highlights

We achieved our highest ever level of ‘overall satisfaction’ (Question 22) – 89% – against last year’s 86% and our previous high of 88% (in 2014). The corresponding score for question 22 was 4.29 – again the highest we’ve achieved and which also just exceeds the University’s Strategy 2020 target of 4.28.

Our average score across all questions was also our highest, at 4.16. This score across all questions places Nottingham at 9th within the Russell Group, as compared to 17th in the 2015 results (noting that reported rank within any group depends on which NSS measures are used).

We also maintained our very high response rate of 75%, reflecting our students’ strong engagement with providing us this important source of feedback and insight about their experience.

In addition to the strong rise on Question 22, Nottingham also registered at least a small rise against every one of the remaining 21 questions, and in every question area.

What do the results mean?

Prospective students use NSS data when choosing their course and University and it plays an important role in the domestic league tables. Nottingham’s 2016 NSS results will first be reflected in The Times ‘Good University Guide’, which will be published in September 2016. All indications are that our rank on that measure will rise considerably, and that we’ll also see improvements in ranks in various subject tables (all other things being equal).

Professor Sarah O’Hara, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, has said that “At University level, the overall picture is very positive and these results should contribute strongly to the University’s overall position. This is excellent news and a huge tribute to the enormous amount of work that has been undertaken by all colleagues in Schools, Faculties and Professional Services.”

Subject highlights

The NSS is fundamentally about students’ experience on their course, and the University result of 89% for ‘overall satisfaction’ reflects the aggregate result across all of our subjects. 24 subjects (out of a total of 39) scored 90% or above – again an all-time high for Nottingham – with four reaching 100%: American and Canadian Studies, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Music and Theology.

Also among those scoring 90% or above for ‘overall satisfaction’ are Economics (96%), The Vet School (95%), English (94%) and three departments within the School of Humanities – Archaeology, Classics and Philosophy – which all achieved 94%, and Natural Sciences at 93%. Law, Life Science and Mathematical Sciences all achieved 92%, and those with 91% were Biosciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Architecture and the Built Environment, Mechanical, Materials & Manufacturing Engineering, and Culture, Film and Media Studies. At 90% were the Business School, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and History.

Further results and analyses

Institution, School and subject level results are already being prepared by Strategy, Planning and Performance (SSP) for internal circulation in the coming week, using official data provided by Hefce, so there is no need or benefit for colleagues to download data or for analyses to be undertaken locally.

SSP are also creating an updated version of the NSS Results Explorer, which will be release as soon as possible after Hefce releases the open ended comments on Wednesday 24 August.

Find out more about our commitments to improving the student experience and beyond in Global Strategy 2020, our vision for the University over the next four years. For further public coverage, visit the Times Higher Education.

Participants wanted for a new study into driving behaviour

August 8th, 2016

A Doctoral Psychology student conducting a study into people’s driving experiences and behaviours requires participants for an online survey.

Driving behaviour is an issue that affects many of us on a day to day basis. The purpose of this study is to investigate how members of the general population react to different situations encountered when driving, and how they make sense of other drivers’ actions.

By completing this survey you will answer questions about your own lifestyle and driving behaviours, and there will be some more general questions about yourself.

In order to take part you must be 17 years or over, be fluent in English, hold a full driving licence and have driven in the UK in the last 12 months. The survey will take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

Find out more and complete the survey online.

If you have any questions about this project please email msxlb1@nottingham.ac.uk

University Boulevard closure for works

August 5th, 2016

From 8pm Friday 5 August until 5am Monday 8 August, University Boulevard will be closed from Beeston Road to the roundabout at Broadgate/West Entrance to the University.

This includes full closure of Queens Road East southbound from University Boulevard to Tattershall Drive and northbound from Tattershall Drive to University Boulevard. Access to the Hockey Club, Tennis Centre and Nottingham Science Park will be maintained. Access to the University of Nottingham, including Nottingham Lakeside Arts and Highfields Park, will not be possible from University Boulevard. Visitors to Lakeside Arts Centre and Highfields are advised to enter the University Park Campus via the north and west entrances.

For the duration of the closure, the Sutton Bonington hopper bus (901) and 34 service will not stop at the Arts Centre bus stop. The nearest alternative stop is East Drive.

The full closure is scheduled for 8pm on Friday 5 August; it is planned for Queens Road East to be completed first by 7am Saturday 6 August to reduce the diversion. From 7am Saturday 6 August, the west-bound carriageway will open to service Science Park, the Tennis Centre and the Hockey Club. Exiting these facilities will be in a westerly direction only and will be available until 8pm only. During this period, works will continue on the eastbound carriageway under a full closure and lane closures on the westbound carriageway. At 8pm, the westbound carriageway will close once more and works will again continue in both the east and west-bound carriageways in full capacity. The full closure of University Boulevard is expected to last until 5am on Monday 8 August.

For more information and a map of the works, view NET’s message.

Diversions

Queens Road East Northbound traffic will be diverted from A6005/B6003 Junction, A6005/By Pass Road/High Road, A6005/Station Road and A6005/Humber Road; all routes will lead to the A52 and follow the tactical diversion via A52 Priory to QMC.

Traffic requiring the use of University Boulevard east and west-bound will be diverted via A52 Priory; west-bound traffic requiring Queens Road East will also follow this diversion but be moved on to the junction with the Nursery Man Pub and turn left into Beeston or may continue straight on for Stapleford/Toton/Long Eaton. Signage will also be placed at Bardills Roundabout and Bramcote Roadabout. The diversions will be reduced in accordance with the completion of sections of work.
