Farewell to Project Transform Sponsor Professor Karen Cox

January 26th, 2017

Professor Karen Cox will leave The University of Nottingham at the end of July 2017 to take up her new and exciting role as sixth Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Kent in August.

Project Transform Programme Director, Ian Leitch, said: “Karen has been the programme sponsor for Project Transform since it first began back in 2013. As a programme director, it is rare that I come across a sponsor that is so supportive and engaged in the delivery of such a large scale transformation programme.

“Karen will be sadly missed by all of us here at Project Transform. Her support and guidance has been instrumental to the success of the programme over the past few weeks. We will make sure that the final phases of Project Transform are delivered, in order for Karen to see her vision as a sponsor become a reality.”

“I can think of no better or more apt way to say thank you to Karen than by successfully completing something that she has put so much personal investment into.

“We do not expect any change of sponsorship or interim measures as things stand, however we can never rule out what may happen in the future. If this does become the case, then we will react in the correct way. Project Transform has enjoyed a level of sponsorship and commitment from the Executive group that I have rarely seen throughout my career and I don’t envisage that support diluting between now and the programme completing.”

Deputy Vice-Chancellor appointed Vice-Chancellor at Kent

January 23rd, 2017

Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen Cox, will leave The University of Nottingham this summer to become the sixth Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Kent.

Professor Cox will leave Nottingham at the end of July, taking up her new role in August.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir David Greenaway said: “Karen’s work at the University has never been less than exemplary. Whether working with cancer patients and their families on their experiences of clinical trials, or serving our University as Pro-Vice-Chancellor and as my Deputy, she has been vital to the growth and success of this institution.

“We will miss her greatly. However, we can only celebrate the achievement of being appointed Vice-Chancellor and President. I wish Karen the best of luck in her new role. She has been an outstanding Deputy Vice-Chancellor, and I have no doubt she will become an equally outstanding Vice-Chancellor.”

Professor Cox said: “By the time I leave Nottingham I will have been here for twenty-three years and I have loved every minute. I have developed academically and professionally here and have been surrounded and supported by wonderful colleagues and friends. It has been a privilege to be part of this University and I shall be sad to leave, however, it is the right thing for me to take this next step. I am tremendously excited about joining the University of Kent and am very much looking forward to this next phase in my career.

A Professor of Cancer and Palliative Care and a Registered Nurse, Professor Cox is currently a Privy Council appointed member of the Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

She completed her PhD at Nottingham in 1999, subsequently holding various academic posts before being promoted to Professor in 2002. Karen served as Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery from 2002-2007. She was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor in 2008. She has held two different portfolios in that role, with responsibilities covering human resources, community engagement, access and widening participation, infrastructure and capital developments and information services.

She was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in January 2013 with responsibility for the development, advocacy, and implementation of the University’s Strategy.

Her academic and research interests include patients’ and families’ experiences of cancer clinical trial involvement, cancer trial management and more recently, choice and decision-making in palliative and end of life care.

Her work has been funded by Cancer Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, ESRC and the NHS. She studied at King’s College London, Oxford Brookes and The University of Nottingham, and has been a Visiting Professor at Trinity College Dublin and Yale University.

Trent Building transforms for Chinese New Year celebrations

January 20th, 2017

Nottingham Lakeside Arts will host Jixiang (Propitious), a world premiere of a specially-commissioned digital projection in a series of free outdoor shows, transforming The University of Nottingham’s iconic Trent Building into a huge digital canvas over the Chinese New Year weekend on 28 and 29 January.

Digital artist Barret Hodgson has collaborated with Chinese artists; Ningbo brush painter Jiang Hongsheng, winner of the ‘National Golden Prize for Chinese Painting’, and virtuoso erhu player Ling Peng, to inspire his 15-minute ‘Jixiang’ projection which will be set to music, celebrating contemporary and traditional Chinese culture.

Director at Nottingham Lakeside Arts, Shona Powell OBE, says: “Barret and I have long shared an ambition to use the Trent Building as a canvas for a digital art commission. This year we’re realising that aspiration and marking the fact that we’ve come a full zodiac cycle since first celebrating Chinese New Year. This is a great occasion for families and friends, and we wanted to create a visually stunning free event which people of all ages can enjoy, and which we hope may also become one of many highlights in our Vice-Chancellor’s final year in post.”

Hodgson’s company Vent Media creates and stages visual media for international live performance events including theatre, music, art and dance. Barret has been a national VJ for many years, collaborating with DJ Yoda, Fat Boy Slim, Ghostface Killah and Roni Size. His recent work in theatre has taken him to Shanghai touring with choreographer Tom Dale’s Digitopia dance theatre performance, created and presented in partnership with MOKO in association with Warwick Arts Centre but also premiered at Nottingham Lakeside Arts.

The Chinese New Year celebrations continue to fortify Nottingham’s strong cultural links with China. In 2003 The University of Nottingham was invited to become the first foreign university to establish an independent campus, under new legislation passed in China. University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is located in Ningbo, a historic city on China’s eastern coast close to Shanghai.
