The Next Generation Research SuperVision Project (RSVP) is a £4.6m national project on doctoral supervision and is believed to be the largest collaborative, cross-disciplinary, translational research project into doctoral education ever funded.
The project is led by the University of York with the University of Nottingham taking a leading role through the Researcher Academy.
We’ll be examining research supervision culture and practice to understand what works in different contexts, identify effective supervision and determine how supervision practice is both supported, recognised and rewarded.
This is a really exciting opportunity to transform supervision in the UK and beyond by developing training and support programmes to help supervisors work more effectively with each other and their PGRs.
If you are involved in the supervision of doctoral candidates in any capacity, we want to hear from you. This is your chance to share the highs and lows of the supervisory experience, and what leads to good supervision.
Your participation will help to form a national picture of the experiences, values and views of research supervisors and help to shape the UK Council for Graduate Education’s future support for research supervision.
You can contribute via a national survey and sign up to join one of five online Focus Groups taking place in July.
Each focus group will explore a distinct area, and to ensure open and honest feedback, facilitators will not be from the University of Nottingham.
The schedule is as follows:
To thank you for your time, colleagues taking the survey will be entered for a prize draw for £250.

Colleagues from across the university are invited to play a special part in this summer’s graduation ceremonies.
This summer we are holding graduation ceremonies between 16 – 24 July for our Class of 2024. This is an amazing time to celebrate the achievements of our graduates and staff.
Feedback from students tells us that they really value seeing staff who have been involved in their learning and broader student experience at their ceremonies.
Volunteers are needed to be part of the graduation platform party for each of our ceremonies. Staff at all levels and from all job families are encouraged to take part.
The platform party is approximately two hours in total. You will arrive 45 minutes before the start time of the ceremony to the staff robing room – upstairs at David Ross Sports Village – where you will be robed by Ede and Ravenscroft.
Around 20 minutes before the ceremony starts, you’ll be asked to form the academic procession which will be led down the ceremony hall and onto the stage to be seated. This marks the beginning of the proceedings.
After an introduction by the Presiding Officer, students will be called to the stage to have their degrees conferred and you’ll be asked to applaud as the students cross the stage.
The ceremony generally lasts for an hour and 15 minutes, after which the academic procession will leave the ceremony, returning to the robing room. Robes are collected back in and at that point you’re able to leave.
We are particularly low on-stage presence at the ceremonies below:
Saturday 20 July, 10:30am – Humanities (all courses except History)
Saturday 20 July, 1:30pm – English and Humanities (History only)
Saturday 20 July, 4:00pm – Cultures, Languages and Area Studies
Monday 22 July, 10:30am – Economics
Your support would be hugely appreciated.
To accommodate extra people, we have decided to extend our registration deadline and platform party gown hire until Friday 21 June 2024.
If you’d like to volunteer, please contact graduation@nottingham.ac.uk stating your interest in volunteering as a member of the platform party before the deadline and a member of the team will be in touch.

The Welcome and Arrivals team has already started to work hard in creating a wonderful experience for our students who will first join the University of Nottingham in September.
This year, Welcome and Arrivals will start on the weekend of 20 September. We will be trialling a new approach and will be proposing events spread across a few weeks to fully support students in their transition to their university life.
The team includes a Steering Group and several Task and Finish Groups (Student Communication – Registration, University Cards and Student Enquiries – Student Living – Student Wellbeing – Student Activities – International Students) who work collaboratively to cover all the aspects of Welcome and Arrivals.
These groups meet regularly to ensure a smooth student experience.
The SU is also playing a key role in the organisation of Welcome and Arrivals and is working closely with the University of Nottingham in co-chairing the Steering Group and actively attending some of the Task and Finish Groups.
Updates and news about Welcome and Arrivals 2024 are posted regularly on the Welcome and Arrivals Team.
If you are interested in hearing more, please join the Welcome and Arrivals Teams channel. You are also very welcome to post questions and comments.
During the Welcome Period, we aim to highlight a wide range of services, schemes and opportunities on offer to students at the university.
For Welcome 2024, several events will be hosted in the Welcome Villages.
All Professional Services and faculty colleagues are invited to host a stall, advertise their opportunities and chat to students.
Some examples from previous years include ambassador scheme working opportunities, the Academic Language and Communication Skills team and Careers and Employability.
For 2024, events are currently scheduled as follows:
If you are interested in hosting a stall at an upcoming Welcome Village for students, please contact Ruth Chamberlain.

Due to popular demand, the agile working and organisation development teams are hosting more briefings to introduce the Agile Working Framework, answer questions and support managers with practical advice for using this new guidance with their teams.
The Agile Working Framework replaces the previous hybrid working guidance, which was tailored to the specific circumstances of the pandemic.
Updated guidance emphasises that decisions should be made at the most effective level; empowering line managers and their teams to determine the most suitable working arrangements to meet their operational responsibilities and the needs of students and colleagues.
The Agile Working Framework and associated documents are more than just directives on physical location; they’re tools to support line managers and staff in crafting effective working practices that align with operational responsibilities. As such, they will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the university.
The sessions aim to support those line managing a team to navigate the new Framework, and supporting People Guidance, and harness the benefits.
These sessions can be booked using this link.
Sessions last between an-hour-and-a-half to two hours and will be taking place throughout the summer.
If there is greater demand than places, more sessions will be scheduled.

The university has announced publication of its first Wellbeing and Mental Health Strategy for staff, which marks a turning point in our commitment to our staff members.
The new staff strategy, developed by the Organisational Development Team, has been created further to the People and Culture strategy’s wellbeing programme of work and was crafted in consultation with the university’s wellbeing steering group and People and Culture Committee.
You can view the strategy via the Your Wellbeing HR webpage and it will also be uploaded to other university webpages for ease of access.
The strategy was authored by Organisational Development Manager Louise Benski and contains a foreword by Helen McNamara, Director of Organisation and People Development, who said:
“This strategy will be the starting point for a number of important workstreams to turn our commitment to staff wellbeing and mental health into tangible support services which will help us all to thrive in our work and in our interactions with each other as a university community.”
You can view the strategy here.
The new strategy will be presented at the Inclusion and Intersectionality group meeting in June to gather views from staff network leads and to support the wellbeing and mental health frameworks being developed with support from Organisational Development Adviser Jo Lambert.
Louise and Jo are grateful for all those who have already contributed to this strategy and welcome all feedback and views on the new strategy by e-mail at: louise.benski@nottingham.ac.uk and jo.lambert@nottingham.ac.uk.
