Update: Please be aware that the restrictions to Saturn editing in December described in this article will no longer be in place due to a delay in the go-live date for Campus Solutions for UK Student Records. Current access arrangements will continue as planned until further notice.
Early next year, we will be launching Campus Solutions for UK Student Records – replacing our current system, Saturn. On Saturday 16 December, we will start the process of transferring the student data between the two systems, a process that will affect how staff and students will use Saturn.
Access to Saturn3 and Saturn Web
On 16 December, we will be removing access to the editable version of Saturn – Saturn 3. Colleagues who are affected by this change will have been emailed directly.
If you currently have access to Saturn Web, you will retain access to this view-only version of Saturn and will be able to search and view student records. Please do not make changes in this system after 15 December.
Editing is being restricted to allow us time to take a copy of the student information in Saturn and transfer that into Campus Solutions. Any changes made in Saturn after we have taken the copy will not be transferred into Campus Solutions and will be lost.
For information on what to do if you believe there is an urgent, critical change to be made to Saturn during this time, please visit the Project Transform Workspace.
Change in process for students
We will be changing the way students update their personal details during this time. If a student needs to update their personal details from 16 December, they should use the Student Services Enquiry Form rather than the Portal. This process will remain in place until the launch of the new student portal MyNottingham.
Reports pulled from Saturn
As changes will be minimal after Saturday 16 December, you will find that any reports or data feeds from Saturn will no longer be an accurate reflection of the student population.
Learn more
To learn more about the process of ‘data migration’, visit the Business Readiness Workspace.
If you have any questions about the downtime, please email projecttransform@nottingham.ac.uk.

Update: Due to the reschedule of the go-live of Campus Solutions for UK Student Records, the Moodle and Rogo downtime described in this article will no longer need to take place in January. Both Moodle and Rogo will be available as normal throughout Monday 29 January through to Wednesday 31 January. If you have any questions about this please email projecttransform@nottingham.ac.uk.
The live versions of Moodle and Rogo will be unavailable between 6pm, Monday 29 January 2018 and 8pm, 31 January 2018 (UK time).
During this time we will be updating the module codes in the two systems to the new Campus Solutions codes and changing the source of authority for student enrolment on modules from Saturn to Campus Solutions. Student ID numbers are also being updated to include an extra digit (usually a 1) at the beginning.
Campus Solutions will replace Saturn for student records in early 2018. Both Moodle and Rogo will need to be updated to integrate with Campus Solutions. In order for us to be able to do this, live Moodle and Rogo will be unavailable for a period but a revision-only version will be available during this time.
The work is happening on these dates to ensure the changes are happening in time for the launch of the student portal MyNottingham. The dates for this downtime period were agreed by Teaching and Learning Executive Group (TLEG).
Revision-only version available
There will be a revision-only version of Moodle and Rogo available from 8pm on Monday 29 January 2018 until 6pm on Wednesday 31 January.
Students will be able to look at documents and resources but the revision-only version is not for submitting assignments or permanently interacting with forums or other modes of engagement. Whilst students will be able to take some activities such as quizzes, nothing that they submit or change will be saved in this revision only version of Moodle, and anything they have changed, submitted, or forum posts made or replied to, will not be available once the full live version is restored.
Staff should not make any changes to Moodle or Rogo during this period or do any marking as this will not be available on the live version when it becomes available again.
Students will be able to access self-tests in Rogo for revision purposes from 8pm Monday 29 January until 6pm on Wednesday 31 January 2018.
Download your resources ahead of the downtime
As a precaution, we would also recommend that staff or students download any particular resources that they need prior to 6pm on Monday 29 January. We will be communicating with students separately but would appreciate your assistance in passing the message on through any channels you have.
There will be a few hours at the beginning and end of this downtime window when the systems will be down completely. This is to allow the switch between the live and revision-only versions of the system.
The new module codes
After the update, both Moodle and Rogo will list modules using the new Campus Solutions module codes. When you log in you will see the title of the module as usual but the code in brackets will have changed to the new code. The title of the modules will remain the same. An example is:
Nineteenth Century French Narrative (R12051 UK) (SPR 17-18)
Will become
Nineteenth Century French Narrative (FREN2009 UNUK) (SPR1 17-18)
All the new module codes can be found on the Student Services Workspace.
The changes will not convert any module codes within resources. For example if you have used your module code inside PowerPoint presentations or documents, or descriptions or links within the module space. If you are an Editing Teacher of a Moodle module, you will need to update any references to the module code within your module space and resources when you are next updating the resource.
For the duration of 2017/18, you can use the new and old code side by side, for example ‘LAWW4035 (previously M34074)’, if it would aid understanding within a document.
We do not expect that all documents will be updated immediately. There will be some crossover for the remainder of this academic year when documents are not fully updated. However, we recommend that documents are updated as soon as possible where using the wrong module code could cause confusion. All documents should be reviewed ready for the 2018/19 year.
China and Malaysia
This period of downtime also affects China and Malaysia. In local time, their downtime will be from 2am on Tuesday 30 January until 4am on Thursday 1 February 2018.
As with the UK, staff and students in China and Malaysia will have access to the revision-only version of the two systems during the downtime. Nothing changed in the revision–only version of Moodle and Rogo will be preserved.
There will be no further changes to the UNNC and UNMC module codes in this update as these were updated earlier this year when Campus Solutions was implemented locally.
Questions
Thank you for your support during this time.
For more information about the implementation of Campus Solutions, please visit the Project Transform Workspace. Alternatively, you can email the team at projecttransform@nottingham.ac.uk.
If you have any questions about what students and staff will be able to do in the revision-only version, please email learning-technologies@nottingham.ac.uk.

The following statement has been issued from the five UK cities bidding to be European Capital of Culture 2023:
“On Tuesday [28 November] we met with representatives of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport including John Glen MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Arts, Heritage and Tourism. We met to discuss the letter sent last week to the UK Government by the European Commission stating that the participation of the UK in the European Capital of Culture in 2023 will not be possible.
Firstly we want to acknowledge the huge and passionate support we have all received locally, nationally and internationally since the receipt of this letter. In particular we appreciate the support from previous and future European Capitals of Culture, and from members of the independent judging panel which itself had expected to be interviewing our teams this week as part of the formal shortlisting process.
It is further evidence of the power of arts and culture to bring the peoples of Europe closer together. The five cities were united in their desire to find solutions which will enable them to realise their cultural ambitions and further develop their cultural integration with people across Europe.
The meeting with DCMS was positive and we were encouraged by their commitment to try and resolve this issue with the European Commission and agree a clear way forward for the cities involved.
We urged the Department to continue its negotiations with the European Commission on the legitimacy of its latest decision. In particular we wish to highlight that the announcement by the European Commission counters a very recent decision of the European Parliament in June 2017 and of the Council in September 2017 which includes a calendar confirming the UK as the host country in 2023. In addition we are seeking clarity given that the United Kingdom has not yet left the EU and the terms of that departure are not yet agreed.
We have collectively therefore requested that DCMS takes further advice on the legal status of the announcement as a matter of urgency.
The meeting also allowed us to consider jointly how we ensure the local energy, enthusiasm and work done by our cities and partners to date can be positively harnessed and recognised even if the Commission maintains its position. This sudden change of heart has the potential to disrupt well over 100 cultural collaborations across the continent which bidding cities have been developing in good faith.
We all recognise the urgent need to reach a conclusion in a timescale that allows us to harness the momentum in our cities. Therefore intensive and constructive discussions will continue over the coming weeks.”

As many of you are hopefully already aware, a conference for all APM staff (levels 4 and above) will take place on Wednesday 20 December.
The main themes of the conference will be networking, change in Higher Education and enhancing your professional identity as a member of the University’s APM staff. These themes will be covered in the plenary sessions. Career and wellbeing support resources available at the University will be showcased in breakout sessions.
We are also delighted to be able to announce that the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor will be speaking and joining us for lunch on the day, along with several of the University’s Directors who will be giving plenary or breakout sessions.
An outline schedule for the day can be viewed by logging into the conference website and clicking through to the Conference Schedule tab. Please note that the finer details and timings for the day are still subject to change and will be updated on this website during the next few weeks leading up to the event.
Information for nearly all of the breakout sessions can be found by clicking on each session’s title: this will also take you through to that session’s booking page.
Places at the APM Conference are limited to 500, so please make sure you register early via the conference website. Attendees are also asked to book their breakout sessions ahead of the day itself — this action is required in addition to booking your conference place.
The conference will be held in Business School South on Jubilee Campus, 9:00am – 4:00pm, Wednesday 20 December.
Please note: A separate event for APM staff levels 1-3 will be held in spring 2018. Details of this will be distributed early in 2018.
