As outlined in the recent Vice-Chancellor’s blog invitations will be issued to all staff from this week to contribute their thoughts to the development of the next University strategy.
Staff will be able to join a series of workshops in faculties and professional services departments at our campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia to gather views and perspectives to inform a ‘Green Paper’ which would set out the foundations of our future strategy.
Each session will be fully interactive, stimulating group discussions and debate to explore perspectives on the possible futures for the University and our community’s role in delivering them.
Invitations will be issued to faculty staff via Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellors and to professional services and operations staff via the Registrar and Chief Finance Officer. Places may be limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. The workshop dates can be found below – just click the links to register for your place.

A number of events are taking place at the University of Nottingham this month in celebration of Black History Month 2018.
The programme of events and presentations taking place throughout October acknowledges that history is being made not just during Black History Month but every day.
Staff and students are welcome to attend, with many events also open to the wider community. We encourage all to get involved and share details of the programme.
With 2018 marking the platinum anniversary of the UK arrival of the first 492 passengers from the West Indies onboard the ship Empire Windrush, the programme commences with a blog published today by Professor Cecile Wright, Lenford Vassell and Dr Val Watson.
Event highlights from our Black History Month programme include:
Other events may be announced throughout the month. For full listings, please visit the University’s events page.
Professor Sarah Sharples, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said:
“I am very pleased that our staff and students are supporting an activity as important as Black History month. This month represents a vital opportunity for learning and celebration, and I wish the team every success with the exciting programme of events”.
Dr Val Watson, Head of University Counselling Service and Chair of the University’s BME Staff Network, said:
“We hope that you will join us in this celebration and contribute to the ongoing debates about the inequities that exist and the progress that is being made albeit slowly. Here, at Nottingham we want to do our part. History is an active process so join in.”

The University of Nottingham is backing a campaign calling for government legislation to ban so-called ‘essay mills’, which has been widely reported on BBC News.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West has joined more than 40 Vice-Chancellors in signing an open letter to the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds, which states: “We are confident that you abhor such cheating as much as we do and encourage you to take the necessary steps to curb these practices, steps which must include a legislative ban on operating or advertising an essay mill.”
Registrar Paul Greatrix invited University staff to add their names to the online Parliamentary petition, which calls for a ban, saying:
“Instances of cheating at Nottingham are thankfully rare and in every case are wholly unacceptable. Students must declare the work is their own, and we promote study skills, specialist software, email filters and academic review to counter plagiarism. The promotion of essay mills is banned on campus. But the best way to tackle essay mills is to ban them, which is why we support the current campaign calling on government to legislate in this area.”
The full text of the open letter is available to view here: Essay Mills – Letter.

Professor Chris Denning has been appointed as Director of the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences (CBS) as it undergoes a £23m expansion to underline its reputation as a hub of world-class interdisciplinary research.
This extends the existing £40m CBS buildings, where areas of research excellence include the Centre for Synthetic Biology, the National Biofilms Innovation Centre, as well as medical chemistry and protein engineering.
The centre’s extension will bring together experts in serious diseases including cancer, cardiovascular, liver, bone and respiratory conditions to encourage collaboration and drive new breakthroughs in treatment and diagnosis.
The CBS extension is due to open in late 2019. It will house academics, researchers and PhD students across five floors of state-of-the-art laboratories and research space and bring together experts from six separate University of Nottingham sites.
Professor Denning, who heads the Stem Cell Biology Unit at the CBS and also leads the transdisciplinary Regenerative Medicines and Stem Cells Research Priority Area, said: “It is a privilege to take on the role of Director of the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences.
“This is an exciting time for the University of Nottingham. The CBS expansion will be completed in November 2019. By interlinking four of its buildings with world-class facilities, we will create a flagship of interdisciplinary enterprise and collaboration for 800 staff at the heart of the University’s main campus.”
He added: “Our vision is that through chemical and biological discovery and engineering, we will diagnose, treat and cure disease, and provide security for quality of life. Our talented researchers, academics and clinicians will achieve this by tackling important questions for cancer, regenerative medicine, microbiology and genomics, through to re-engineering bacteria to produce valuable advanced fuels.”
Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “I am delighted at Professor Denning’s appointment. Chris is a world leader in genetic engineering and stem cell therapies as well as an inspirational advocate of the power of transdisciplinary discovery. Under his leadership, the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences will bring together remarkable researchers from complementary fields under one roof, working together to deliver advances that change lives.”

Universities UK and the University & College Union have both welcomed the Joint Expert Panel report (JEP) published on 13 September 2018.
UUK is now conducting a period of formal consultation on the report with employers, including the University of Nottingham, and has published its consultation document.
Staff are invited to help inform the University’s response to the consultation by contributing their views by email to br-PensionEngage@nottingham.ac.uk by 12:00 noon on Friday 26 October 2018.
In brief summary, the JEP report suggests that a combination of employers taking on greater risk and the trustee updating the valuation assumption could mean that the future USS deficit could fall from £7.5 billion to £4 billion.
This could mean combined employer and member contributions of 29.2% to fund the current benefits of the scheme (minus the 1% match). This compares to the current rate of 26% (18% by employers, 8% by employees) and the rate of 36.6% proposed from April 2020 by USS, based on the valuation as it stands.
If agreed and implemented, these changes would avoid the need for the steeper contribution increases envisaged in the USS consultation on cost-sharing and create the space for the Joint Negotiating Committee to consider some of the longer-term issues and establish a stable platform for a further review of the pension scheme by the Panel.
The USS Trustee has confirmed that they are ready to engage constructively with UCU and UUK over the coming weeks as they consider their respective positions, in the hope of finding common ground that could lead to a way forward: www.ussemployers.org.uk.
The Vice-Chancellor has written to the Chair of the University’s UCU Branch, saying:
“The University of Nottingham agreed the negotiated direction of travel in setting up the JEP and we therefore take their outcomes seriously.
“As I maintained last term, my hope is that the JEP report will support positive discussions between UUK, UCU and USS and act as the first step towards a solution for the USS pension scheme that is workable, affordable for members and employers and meets UUK’s commitment to continuing to offer valuable defined benefits as part of the overall scheme.
“Of course, there are a number of challenges ahead: the views of the Pension Trustee and the Pension Regulator are as yet unknown, and the affordability of the additional contributions from both employee and employer perspective needs to be considered carefully.
“I hope that our colleagues who are members of the scheme – whether UCU members or not – take the opportunity to make their views known and that they approach renewed negotiations in the spirit of constructive discourse which I observed was a hallmark of the debate at Nottingham last spring.”
