Module enrolment for 2019/20 optional modules

Students whose programme of study allows a choice of modules will be able to make these choices following the summer exam period. 

The online module enrolment form will be available between noon on Monday 10 June and noon on Monday 24 June. Students will be able to access it via the MyNottingham web application (note that this is different to the MyNottingham app). 

To help students with their choices, a preliminary module teaching timetable will be available, which will contain the anticipated main sessions for each module. 

Students will be informed of the general process and dates when they return for their studies on Monday 13 May. They will also receive reminders and more detailed information just before module enrolment opens.

Essential workspace maintenance from 4pm, Monday 13 May

May 9th, 2019

Following the recent workspace incident, we are working to fully restore service as soon as possible. For complete restoration to take place, we will need to make workspace read-only for up to two weeks from 4pm, Monday 13 May 2019.

During this time workspace will not be editable until essential platform maintenance is complete. We will issue further communication when service is restored.

Please ensure any content changes are saved and uploaded by 4pm, Monday 13 May.

After placing workspace into read-only, we expect to restore external (off campus) access by midday on Tuesday 14 May.

We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.

Staff Room — a new internal communications channel for staff at the University

Next week sees the launch of a new internal communications channel for staff at the University. Staff Room will be live for the start of term, from Monday 13 May.

Staff Room replaces In the Loop as the landing page for staff, and has been developed with the support and feedback of colleagues from across the University.

The new page will highlight key news and information, colleague and student successes, and updates to systems and services affecting our UK campuses.

Nottingham Credit Union — providing ethical, fair and competitive financial services

University of Nottingham has entered into an agreement with Nottingham Credit Union (NCU) so that staff can benefit from a range of straightforward saving products and fair, manageable loans, with the option to save or make repayments directly and easily by salary deduction through payroll.

All financial arrangements, queries and agreements are handled directly by NCU. NCU set up any agreed salary deductions directly with the University, as a ‘payroll partner’.

Renaming the Teaching and Learning Building — nominations open

As announced on International Women’s Day, we’re renaming the Teaching and Learning Building. Now’s your chance to get involved by helping us pick a name.

We’re planning to rename this state-of-the-art building after an inspirational woman who has made a significant contribution to teaching, learning or research.

This is a great opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contribution that women staff and students make to our local community. With this in mind, we’re particularly welcoming nominees who have a demonstrable link to the history of Nottingham and/or the University.

Professor Sarah Sharples, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, explained:

“The names of our buildings can remind us about our University history, but also affect our sense of inclusion in the present. Our commitment to delivering an inclusive University environment means that we need to think about diversity in the names of our buildings, and has prompted us to focus on women nominations for this important new building at the heart of our University Park campus. I look forward to receiving an inspirational set of names nominated by our University community.”

The deadline for nominations is Tuesday 21 May 2019.

All of the names put forward will be considered by a panel, who will decide on a shortlist. This shortlist will then be passed back to staff and students for a final vote later this month, with the subsequent formal recommendation provided to University Executive Board before the end of session.

Do you want to see change? Play your part, make a difference

The University’s largest-ever survey into racial equality on campus launches today (Tuesday 7 May 2019) for staff and students.

Responses to the survey will be used to inform an action plan on racial equality, outlining how the University will develop its recruitment, support, teaching and learning process to better support BME (black and minority ethnic) staff and students. They will also help shape work the University is already doing to tackle racial inequality, such as the Excellence in Education programme examining BME attainment.

The University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Professor Sarah Sharples, encouraged staff and students to take part.

“By taking this survey, you can play your part in making a difference. Please encourage colleagues and students to complete the survey – to help us to build a picture of racial equality on campus that we can use to bring about real change.”

She was joined by the Race Equality Charter Student Ambassadors, a group of students who are supporting the University’s work on the REC application, in urging all members of the University community to complete the survey and play their part in making change on campus.

Ikra Mahmood, first year undergraduate student in the School of Medicine and REC Student Ambassador, said: “Being part of an underrepresented group at university may make you feel like your voice won’t be heard. We’re here for exactly that: to support empowerment and real change – starting with the Race Equality Charter Survey. Fill it in and have your say.”

“Your views on race equality, diversity and inclusion really matter: only with your responses can we know what we have done well, what we need to improve, and what we need to start planning,” added Ruochong Zhang, Race Equality Charter Ambassador and postgraduate student in the School of Psychology.

“This survey is only a beginning. We are here to represent your voices. Based on your input, we will keep pushing for improvements in race equality in all aspects of University life.”

Part of the University’s application for Race Equality Charter bronze status to be submitted in summer 2020, the survey will provide key data on the experiences and perceptions of the University community in relation to race.

The experiences and perceptions of all students and staff are essential to the data collection process – but it is particularly important to gather information from the BME members of the University community. The REC self-assessment team is working with the BME Staff Network and student cultural societies to encourage responses from all sections of our diverse community.

The survey can be completed online – staff and student versions are available. Paper versions of the survey are also available – contact alternativeformats@nottingham.ac.uk or call 0115 951 4591 for information on how to obtain and submit one.

The survey helps us to assess and define our current position – giving us a picture of the experiences of staff and students across the institution. Survey data will be used with other information already collected by the University to create this picture – including recruitment and attainment data.

All information collected during the survey and through other data-gathering exercises will be confidential. On occasion we might ask for contact details so that we can invite respondents to be involved in further activity. Providing contact details is entirely voluntary, and contact information will always be stored separately to survey responses.

Update to Windows 10 on University laptops/desktops

To ensure your version of Windows 10 stays in continued support from Microsoft, we released a feature update from Wednesday 17 April.

The update will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes to install once the restart has been started.

The update involved a notification requesting you to restart your computer — please do so when convenient. You can start the installation anytime by right clicking the green square icon and select ‘Restart Now’.

Please note, if you have pending system updates before Wednesday 17 April, you will need to restart your computer to install these first.

In most cases the update will be three versions ahead of the current installed version. You can read more about the updates and new features on the Windows blogs:

Service/software affected: University Windows 10 laptops and desktops

Users/areas affected: Users of devices running an older edition of Windows 10

Impact: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes for the update to install

Date & time: From Wednesday 17 April

Action: Please contact the IT Service Desk or Campus IT Support if you experience issues updating Windows 10.

Our Dementia Choir with Vicky McClure

The University of Nottingham is set to feature in Our Dementia Choir, a new two-part series presented by BAFTA-award winning actress Vicky McClure.

Over the course of three months, the Line of Duty actress joined forces with the University of Nottingham and the UK’s leading scientists as she discovered the physical and emotional effects of music on the brain while meeting people with dementia and their families as she created a choir of people living with the condition.

Vicky has close personal experience of dementia, through caring for her Nana Iris, who died in 2015. During that period, and through her role with the Alzheimer’s Society, Vicky has seen first-hand how music and singing had affected dementia patients and those who love and care for them.

Now, she aims to spread the word on a much bigger scale. In this series she meets the scientists exploring pioneering techniques and cutting edge scanning technology in order to reveal how music can stimulate a brain damaged by dementia. And, bringing her choir together, they’ll put on the biggest show of their lives with the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in our understanding of how music therapy can help people with dementia.

In the programme choir members are kitted out with special wrist sensors that measure key changes to their bodies during each rehearsal, providing data to review at the end of the choir project, but also to contribute to a wider three year study by Prof Seb Crutch from the University College London.

Update (14 May 2018): Choir rehearsals have continued at the University following the documentary with a fundraising appeal set up to provide weekly singing lessons for members.

Nottingham backed research impact and influence grows

Andy Naylor, CEO of Nottingham Technology Ventures (NTV), the organisation which manages the University’s interest in a portfolio of 18 spin-out companies – hails the University’s landmark year. 

The University of Nottingham has a proud history of research and impact – not least giving the world the MRI scanner. This year has seen exciting growth and we are viewing this not only as a landmark year but also as a platform for an exciting future. 

We’re immensely proud to have played a part in advising on some truly ground-breaking businesses and in helping the University achieve a record return from its shareholdings. 

That return is also a tribute to an expert Intellectual Property Commercialisation Office at the University which has a long track record of identifying the value in research projects, nurturing and developing potential, and bringing transformative products to market. 

The businesses which began life as research projects earned a return of more than £11 million for the University of Nottingham last year. They developed a range of advanced products and services for industries which range from agriculture and the environment to healthcare and manufacturing. 

The £11m return will be reinvested in supporting the University’s core mission of creating a learning environment which inspires students and carrying out research which leads to transformative discovery. 

NTV’s work in managing the portfolio means it plays an important role in helping the University nurture projects that can be commercialised to benefit the local and regional economy through jobs and financial gain, and wider society by developing products and services which address major challenges. 

NTV’s team advises on investments the University makes into spin-out companies from two funds. It also supports the progress of those investments and uses its expertise to help build valuable shareholdings and secure a return from them in a way which benefits the businesses and the University. 

NTV and the University have a different approach to more traditional investment funds, combining in-house academic and technical expertise with specialist commercial knowledge which suits the needs of projects which may take time to come to fruition. 

Spin-out successes during the year included early cancer detection company Oncimmune, where £5 million was raised from the sale of shares, and cancer research spin-out CrownBio Inc., where the sale of the University’s stake raised £3.6m. 

They follow in the footsteps of Monica Healthcare, which developed a foetal heart monitor later acquired by industry giant GE Healthcare. 

Professor Dame Jessica Corner, the Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Nottingham is clear about the pivotal role research has on the world. 

“Research into the ideas and industries of the future is central to the contribution which the University makes to the world around us, and the professional expertise we have within NTV is vital in helping us to fulfil that mission. 

“The financial return that has been achieved demonstrates both the sheer scale of innovation being driven by our research teams and our ability to translate that into valuable real-world outcomes.” 

NTV is based at the University of Nottingham Innovation Park (UNIP), one of the biggest concentrations of research commercialisation in the Midlands. NTV works hand-in-hand with the IP Commercialisation Office to identify and support research projects that have long-term commercial potential.
