Code of practice on handling allegations of research misconduct

January 21st, 2020

The University now has a dedicated code of practice on the handling of allegations of research misconduct.  This code applies to all staff and PGR students across our UK, China and Malaysia campuses.

The process described in this code replaces the process described under the section “Procedures for Dealing with Allegations of Research Misconduct” in the current Code of Research Conduct and Research Ethics (Version 6a (revised March 2019)).

The code defines research misconduct activities in line with the Concordat to Support Research Integrity, and is in line with UK Research Integrity Office recommendations and meets the expectations of research funders and regulatory bodies.  The scope of the code makes a clear distinction from The Academic Misconduct Procedure for students and the Whistleblowing (Public Interest Disclosure) Code.

Staff and PGR students are required to familiarise themselves with the new code of practice.  Research leaders and supervisors are requested to bring to the attention of their research teams and PGR students.

The code is available on our Ethics and integrity pages.

For any queries please contact the Head of Research Integrity, Ali Alshukry .

De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre set to undergo £2million refurbishment

January 20th, 2020

The De Vere East Midlands Conference Centre (EMCC) on University Park campus has announced a major refurbishment to begin at the end of January.

More than £2million is being invested to reinvigorate the award-winning conference facility which will be unveiled at the end of Spring 2020. The project, which is set to modernise the venue with state-of-the-art design and equipment including an impressive video wall, comes as the conference centre celebrates its 35th anniversary.

The three month-long refurbishment programme will include the remodelling of the venue’s atrium area creating a collaborative space. The design concept is a subtle celebration of Nottinghamshire and the University’s culture.

The refreshed meeting rooms and banqueting spaces will enrich delegate experience alongside the installation of cutting edge audio-visual technology.

The project will also include featured artwork created by a local Nottingham-based artist commissioned in conjunction with the Lakeside Art’s Centre.

The EMCC will be closed while refurbishment work takes place during February and March, with the project due for completion in late spring, 2020.

Universities for Nottingham: major new civic collaboration with Nottingham Trent University

January 20th, 2020

Universities for Nottingham initiative launched today to help improve the lives of local people.

The Universities for Nottingham is a pioneering collaboration between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, bringing together the strengths and civic missions of our two universities to help drive prosperity and opportunity across our local area.

Together with Nottingham Trent University, we have undertaken a joint economic, social and cultural impact study – and explored where we might be able to join-up our local programmes and activity. Drawing on the recommendations of the UPP Civic University Commission, this work will provide the foundation for a new approach to how we work with each other and with our local partners to help change the lives of people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

Join the conversation on twitter at #UnisForNottingham.

Our two universities already have a huge impact on the lives of local people and this is documented in a joint impact assessment report based on independent analysis from the consultancy Public First, as well as on the Universities for Nottingham website and through a series of videos.

On the morning of 20 January 2020, at Nottingham’s BioCity, the project will be launched in front of an audience of civic leaders, businesses and community organisations and set out our aim to create the first ‘Universities for Nottingham Civic Agreement’ later this year. This agreement will help establish a programme of collectively agreed and publicly shared projects between our universities and partners, around five themes.

These themes are:

  1. Economic prosperity
  2. Educational opportunity
  3. Environmental sustainability
  4. Health, wellbeing and culture
  5. Unlocking the universities

How to get involved
The Universities for Nottingham initiative will support the University’s new strategy, which sets out a vision “to be a university without borders, reaching out to our civic partners”. It will form part of a broader civic strategy for the University, currently being developed by the University’s Civic and Regional Committee.

The initiative has been led by the Global and Political Affairs Unit (GPAU) within External Relations at the University of Nottingham. Members of the GPAU team are planning a series of internal roadshows to present the initiative to colleagues across the University over the coming months, providing information on how to get involved.  Over the coming months, we will explore the development of new internal network for staff interested in this agenda.

The University’s Institute for Policy and Engagement will also be involved in supporting researchers who want to get involved in the project and the wider civic university agenda, through their support of local policy impact and public engagement activities. This month, the Institute has provided funding and assistance for collaborations between academics and local public and third sector bodies across the region working in areas such as health, policing, social care, and refugee support.

To register an interest:

  • in joining an informal University of Nottingham network for those currently, or interested in working more on the civic agenda;
  • in attending a roadshow,
  • in contributing to the ongoing storytelling about our impact with case studies from your work

To find out more, please contact the team at ufn@nottingham.ac.uk or get in touch with Political and Public Affairs Officer, Amy Williams.

Action required: Your University storage to OneDrive

January 20th, 2020

Staff and students are now well on their way to moving their data from their Z: drive to Microsoft OneDrive.

From the end of this month (January 2020), access to existing personal (Z:) drive will be restricted to read only. R: and S: drives will be reviewed with colleagues starting in Spring 2020, with the aim to arrange relocation to Office 365 where possible.

Read only means you will no longer be able to save new data or make changes to existing data on your Z: Drive. You will only be able to access your data, copy and paste it elsewhere. This will be temporary and all access will be removed later this year.

With little over two weeks to go you need to migrate your Z: drive data now – for more information click here or attend an O365 migration workshopNew dates have been added.

Staff and students already have access to 5TB of OneDrive storage through Office 365. Even more space is available when collaborating with others through Microsoft Teams.

Microsoft OneDrive offers greater flexibility, capacity and collaboration. It also provides a greater degree of security for storing our data.

As well as your personal data – plans are now well underway to move data from research (R:) and shared (S:) drives. Information Services are on hand to support colleagues in migrating their research data and their team’s data on shared drives starting in Spring 2020 and would encourage data owners to contact their local Campus IT Support.

Chief Digital Officer, David Hill said: “We know many of our colleagues and students have already made the move to Office 365 and have access to the benefits of this service.”

“Cloud storage provides our staff and students with the best platform for collaborative learning, accessing their secure data globally, more storage and ensuring the stability of their data.

“If you are yet to join the rest of the university in migrating your Z: Drive I urge you to set aside the small amount of time required to do so.”

Director of Governance and Assurance, Jason Carter said: “This is a great opportunity for us all to get our data management in good order. I strongly recommend that we all use this time to review the data we currently hold and make sure we only move what we need. This will really help the University in our GDPR compliance.

“As O365 offers a much more secure place to hold our data, it will also support researchers in meeting your funders’ terms and conditions. Remember – we shouldn’t keep data just in case it’ll be useful one day, only if we have a good reason to do so.”

IT specialists will support staff and students, especially those with complex storage needs. If you think you may need assistance in migrating data to OneDrive or have a specific issue or requirement please contact Campus IT.

To start your data move now more information can be found here.
