Please continue to wear face coverings on campus

February 1st, 2022

Government restrictions regarding face coverings have recently changed. However, as a university community we must remain vigilant to ensure that our infection and transmission rates continue to remain low.

We strongly encourage all members of our university community to continue to wear a face covering in all indoor spaces, unless exempt, and this includes: corridors and communal spaces; teaching settings, including lecture halls, seminar rooms, laboratories and workshops; libraries and shared offices to protect everyone, especially those who are vulnerable.

Staff around the university can request disposable medical face masks and FFP2 masks from the University Testing Service.

We have also updated the promotional materials on our Covid resources SharePoint site which include A3/A4 posters and landscape versions for use on digital screens.

We’re also asking colleagues to replace the current ‘face coverings are mandatory’ materials in their department with the new assets provided. There are a range of options, including:

For any questions, please email the testing inbox.

Professional Services – the return to campus working

January 31st, 2022

A message to Professional Services colleagues from Paul Greatrix, Jaspal Kaur and Margaret Monckton.

Dear colleagues,

It is good to start 2022 with the positive news that the government has lifted its ‘Plan B’ restrictions – this is a significant and positive milestone in our own recovery from the lockdowns and restrictions that have been a feature of our lives for almost two years.

Whilst many of our colleagues in professional services, operations, teaching and research have spent time working on campus throughout the pandemic, we are able to invite those colleagues who were required to work from home before the winter break to return to regular time spent working on our award-winning campuses again.

As the Vice-Chancellor set out in her recent VC Blog, we have a busy and indeed game-changing year of projects to deliver for the university and our colleagues. We are designing the new Castle Meadow Campus in consultation with staff across the university, as well as completing the purchase of our Malaysia campus to cement and extend our operations in the ASEAN region.

We are also improving the foundations for our performance as an institution, with work to deliver our new research strategy, curriculum reform and realising our full potential as a university, embedding our values into how we teach, research and deliver our services. And we are refocusing on the essentials to improve the working conditions for our staff and students, spending an additional £6 million to alleviate workload pressures and address the maintenance backlog, alongside work to further improve Campus Solutions and deliver new digital solutions for our HR, Finance and student recruitment operations.

To deliver this, we will need to revitalise both how and where we work, moving from an approach which was often wholly remote for many colleagues, back to our hybrid model where time is spent both on campus and working from home.

A university is so much more than a set of buildings, laboratories and classrooms. It is a thriving community of people, collaborating in their work, and a bustling exchange where people meet to study, work and socialise together. We have missed many of these aspects whilst away from campus, and although MS Teams is now an undoubted essential in our working lives, it simply cannot replicate the enjoyment of face-to-face interaction with our colleagues, or enable the level of collaboration, innovation, learning and creativity that can come from this.

It is important that we once again begin the transition to regular working from campus and re-join colleagues who have remained on them throughout. A physical connection to the wider university as well as our own teams is a critical part of all of our roles, and just as important as some of the efficiencies that may be gained whilst working from home. Please work closely with your line managers during the transition back to campus, support your colleagues and take advantage of the wide range of wellbeing, guidance, training and other support materials listed at our Hybrid Working Site.

We know that returning to campus, albeit for 40% of the time initially, will prompt different feelings and emotions among our colleagues. For many the prospect of return will be eagerly anticipated, for others there may be no strong feelings either way, and for some there may be feelings of anxiety and apprehension.

All of us will have had different experiences during the pandemic and therefore it is important we consider how we behave inclusively and supportively during the transition back to campus.

We will want to retain the work/life balance and business benefits of a more flexible approach to our work, alongside the team, social and productivity dividends of working on campus. We will also want to continue our journey from hybrid to agile working – and we will be publishing an update on the agile working vision and programme very shortly.

Your line manager and directors will determine with you what the return to hybrid working looks like for you in practice, within the parameters defined in the communication from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Appreciating that some may need a little time to adjust back to campus working we have asked that arrangements are as supportive as possible.

We very much look forward to working with all of you over the coming months and continuing the journey to return our campuses to the busy and vibrant centres of innovation and learning that our staff and students value so much.

Internal Mentor Pool: apply to be a mentor

January 31st, 2022

The Leadership and Management Academy is pleased to announce that it is expanding its Internal Mentor Pool.

We are looking for new mentors from all Professional Services Departments, Faculties and Schools.  All staff, from all job levels, from any job family can apply to be a mentor.

We are particularly keen to expand the diversity of our mentor pool and would encourage all staff to consider applying.   We know how important it is to be able to see ourselves in others.  Representation matters.  We are very keen to hear from staff from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQIA staff, staff with disabilities, neurodiverse members of staff, and anyone who has overcome a challenge within their working lives that they may be able to share with others to help them on their journey.  We do believe that everyone has something that they can offer, no matter how small or insignificant you may feel it is.  It may just be the missing piece to someone else’s puzzle.

What does the Internal Mentor Pool involve?

The Internal Mentor Pool currently comprises around 140 staff from a range of professional service and academic roles who we match through our internal service to staff across the university. Often these staff members are looking for particular support in their careers from others who may have once experienced what they are currently working through.  You do not need to have a formal qualification to become a mentor.  It is your life experience and commitment to helping others that is of most important.  We will offer you support and internal training as part of your induction to mentoring.

What is mentoring?

A mentor is someone in the workplace who is able to provide support, advice and guidance to a colleague.  The mentor is willing to share their lived experience, skills, knowledge and expertise and to guide for the benefit of the mentee and the University.  Mentors are from everywhere within the university and matches are made based on what you want to achieve.  Mentors work with their mentees on a one-to-one basis, although they may suggest further people for you to contact as part of your relationship.

Why mentoring?

Mentoring creates opportunities for the development of supportive relationships, enabling individuals to develop personally and professionally.  By taking part in the Internal Mentor Pool you will also benefit from personal development, deeper insights into the challenges others face, and a greater understanding of the positive impact you can have on others.

How can I become a mentor?

All members of staff at the university can complete a short application form to become a mentor.  We encourage applications from across the university population, recognising the range of skills and talent in our workforce.  You must feel comfortable with the prospect of mentoring people who may be working in a similar or different area to yourself.

There is no requirement for you to mentor a certain number of mentees throughout a year, but we would like you to mentor at least one staff member within every 12 month period.  We offer internal training, support and a Community of Practice where you can build relationships with other university mentors.

You can find more information on mentoring on the LMA Hub.

For further information, please contact Ruth Francis, Management Development Manager.

Professional Services Awards 2022: celebrating our extraordinary PS teams

January 28th, 2022

The university is excited to be hosting its inaugural Professional Services Awards in May 2022 to celebrate our extraordinary teams.

2020 and 2021 have been extraordinary years for the university, and in particular for the Professional Services teams who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, often unnoticed, to ensure that our campuses and core services remained operational under unique and often trying circumstances.

For the first time, on Monday 23 May 2022 we will be holding an inaugural Professional Services Awards ceremony.

This will be an evening of celebration and reflection, showcasing all that our teams have achieved and will provide an opportunity to come together collectively at our fantastic EMCC conference centre venue (note – physical attendance will be subject to any relevant government restrictions at the time).

To fully reflect the breadth and depth of services that are supported by our Professional Services teams, we have identified 11 nomination categories – all of which align to university core goals and values.

All nominations will be team-based to reflect the extraordinary collective efforts that we have all witnessed during the past 24 months.

Any member of the university’s staff or student community can nominate a team and Professional Services staff will also be able to self-nominate for any of the categories.

Nominations will open in early March 2022 and will stay open for six weeks. People will have the choice of either submitting their nominations digitally via an online form, using a printed paper form or by submitting a video/audio clip.

Paper forms will be distributed to key staff and student networks closer to the time.

The Professional Services Executive (Paul Greatrix, David Hill, Jaspal Kaur and Margaret Monckton) who are sponsoring the event, said: “We are absolutely delighted to launch our first PS Awards and see an event that we have been eagerly awaiting for the last 12 months come to fruition.

We are extremely proud and humbled by the extraordinary efforts of our teams and how they have contributed both on the front line and behind the scenes, to ensure our campuses, systems and services remained fully operational during the most trying of circumstances.

This event will provide the opportunity to showcase our amazing contributions and for us to take time to stop and reflect upon what we have collectively achieved. We are very much looking forward to celebrating these successes with you”.

Further details regarding the event and how to nominate will follow in the coming weeks.

If you have any queries about the PS Awards, or would like to volunteer to be involved in this celebratory event, please contact Sharon Caine.

Lively and thought-provoking research town halls

January 28th, 2022

Update from Professor Dame Jessica Corner

My thanks to all who supported our latest series of online town halls, where we updated on the university’s renewed strategy for research and held a Q&A to discuss how we can together achieve our goals.

Questions at each of the five faculty-led town halls were thought-provoking and challenging. I am delighted the town halls were well-attended and underlined our commitment to engage with you in delivering our research strategy and building a vibrant research culture.

Themes emerging include:

  • the evidence that our research strategy puts us in a leading position
  • acknowledging that research needs a long-term approach
  • support for small-scale blue-skies pilot projects
  • balancing resources for securing funding with those needed to deliver projects
  • promoting smaller £50k to £500k grants in parallel with supersize funding initiatives
  • time for research and grant writing and reducing bureaucracy
  • cascading best practice of high-performing areas
  • how PGR research fits into the strategy
  • more reliable PhD funding
  • effective support to get research projects under way

For those unable to attend, recordings can be found on the research strategy pages. You will also be able to view my short presentation on the research strategy.

MBE investiture for university technicians’ ‘champion’

January 25th, 2022

The University of Nottingham’s most senior technician has received her MBE from His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge.

The investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle followed the announcement of the honour for Director of Technical Skills and Strategy Kelly Vere in the Queen’s New Year Honours 2021 for services to championing the role of technicians in higher education and research institutions.

Unsung heroes

There are currently more than 30,000 technicians employed in UK higher education and research institutions working across all disciplines including engineering, science, health and technology. They will be integral to overcoming some of the great challenges of the coming years and decades – from updating our transport infrastructure and local internet access, to securing the future of our energy supply.

However, an ageing workforce means that 50,000 of our best technicians across all sectors are retiring every year, and forecasts show we will need as many as 700,000 more technicians in the UK over the course of the next decade to meet demand from employers.

Kelly Vere has spearheaded the implementation and development of the University of Nottingham’s Technical Services Strategy to enable the strategic and professional development of the University’s 700+ technical staff across the UK and Asia.

Kelly’s contribution to championing the role of technicians – the ‘unsung heroes’ of research and teaching in UK higher education and research institutions – is unique. She represents the University externally within and beyond the sector, and works with government and funding bodies to influence national policy.

Kelly rose through the ranks to her current position after joining the University as a junior technician at the age of 18, whilst studying for a part-time degree in Biomedical Science, before rapidly progressing to positions as Senior Research Technician and Laboratory Manager.

Kelly Vere and her son Lewis proudly show off her MBE

Building visibility and recognition for the technical community

Alongside her role at the University of Nottingham, Kelly is on a long term secondment with the Science Council where she leads on engagement with the higher education sector to increase visibility and recognition of technicians. She founded and leads the Technician Commitment – a sector wide initiative funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for the technical community across higher education and research.

The Technician Commitment currently stands at over 100 institutional signatory and supporter organisations. In February 2020 it was announced that she would lead a new £5M programme ‘TALENT’, awarded to the Midlands Innovation universities and funded by Research England to advance status and opportunity for the technical community. Kelly has built and developed partnerships with higher education institutions, industry, government departments, funding bodies and learned societies to influence sector activities and policy in the area of technical roles, skills and careers.

Additional external roles include being chair of the Midlands Innovation Technical Skills Strategy Committee and Advance HE’s Athena Swan Professional, Technical and Operational Staff group while also serving on the Challenge Panel for the BEIS Review Review of Research Bureaucracy, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Research Technical Professional Working Group, the Institute of Physics Technical Skills Awards Panel, the Royal Society’s Research System Community of Interest, the Researcher Concordat Strategy Group, the Times Higher Education Awards judging panel, and an advisory board for the Science Museum.
