The university is launching a new agile working project, which will be part of the Getting in Shape programme.
The agile working project will help the University of Nottingham define the way we will work in the future, and it will shape the requirements for the infrastructure and policies that we will need to achieve our vision.
Agile working is focused on enabling everyone in our university community to feel supported in using time, technology, workspaces and campuses in the best way to deliver our shared goals for teaching, research and students.
Returning to new and different patterns of hybrid working has undoubtedly been challenging or awkward for many of us. One of the purposes of the agile project is to establish new models of working and effective approaches to the new environment which will address these issues.
To do this the agile working project will collaborate with colleagues across the university to create a shared vision of our future way of working, and then coordinate with Estates, Digital and Technology Services, HR and Planning, Performance and Strategic Change to develop a plan to implement the culture, policies, working environments and digital platforms that will make it happen.
The first phase of the project will run for the next two years and will lay down the foundations for how we will work as we enter the second quarter of the 21st Century. It is going to take us a bit of time to get there but we want to do this properly and get it right for everyone.
The project will build on the work of the Return to Campus and Hybrid Working projects. For the present time, we should all continue to work in the ways agreed with our local line management during these projects. Agile working will set the path for the university’s next steps.
Describing the project, Registrar and project sponsor Paul Greatrix said:
“Agile working really matters. To me, to you, to all of our staff community and for the University of Nottingham. It will be the means by which we empower our staff to achieve their potential and embed collaboration in all that we do. As we say we will in our University Strategy.
By developing a comprehensive agile working framework we will provide the structure and develop a culture which enables everyone to thrive, to deliver their best work for the university and to make more effective use of their time.
All of this will mean that we are all working better and smarter to help the university achieve our goals. This is not empty rhetoric. It is about providing everyone with the tools, environment, policies, collaborative opportunities to do what we all want to do: to deliver our best for the university in our core activities – supporting education, the student experience and research and knowledge exchange – together with all of the enabling operations that go with them.”

Following the successful Designing Programmes for Learning conference that took place in January 2022, in which the university showcased its approach to curriculum design, there is now an institutional commitment to provide resources that will support all schools in redesigning their courses to embody programme-level design principles.
The university’s Education and Student Experience Strategic Delivery Plan set curriculum as one of its key priorities. Through a series of pilot studies in a selection of schools, we have developed and refined a framework for programme-level curriculum design which we shared with colleagues from other HEIs at a conference in January 2022. The framework initially involves the assembly of an evidence base obtained from various stakeholders (employers, alumni, students, market research).
This evidence base is used to inform the design of a programme of study that focuses on the student journey, leading to the skills and values that we expect UoN graduates to be able to demonstrate. The design process is undertaken by both staff and students, with the outcome a negotiated co-creation.
The process ensures that assessment is purposeful and sustainable, and that students are clear on why, how, and when, they acquire and demonstrate programme-level learning outcomes.
New university funding means that we are now able to roll out our design framework to schools across the institution, thus launching the Curriculum Transformation Project. The university commitment will provide support through central teams, through roles in faculties, and through the teaching backfill needed to allow staff in schools the time to devote to the design process.
The project will also capitalise on the integration of new digital solutions that will support both curriculum management and electronic assessment.
Various events will be held to ensure that information about the Curriculum Transformation Project is disseminated to staff and students.
If you would like to know more, please contact Katharine Reid.

Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Long will leave the university to become the new Vice-Chancellor of Northumbria University from 1 August 2022.
As Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Long has led operational planning and academic resources across the university, supporting Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West and colleagues across academic and professional services to ensure the delivery of world changing research, excellent teaching and the student experience. He serves on University Council and its Committees, as well as representing the university locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
During his term, Professor Long has also steered the creation of the new University Strategy setting out the institution’s strategic ambitions, goals and values; overseen the university’s response to the challenges of the pandemic and the recovery of its operations; and is currently leading the development of the new Castle Meadow campus.
Announcing Professor Long’s move, Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West said:
“I am delighted that Andy has secured the role of Vice-Chancellor at Northumbria University. During his long and distinguished career at Nottingham and within his academic field, he has demonstrated an unrivalled depth of understanding which I know will stand him in good stead at Northumbria. Of course, this is also a sad moment as we say goodbye to someone who has made numerous contributions to Nottingham from his time as a PhD student. I hugely enjoy working with Andy and appreciate his wisdom, evidence-based approach and extraordinary commitment to the success of the university.”
Looking ahead to taking up his new role, Professor Long said:
“I am extremely pleased to be joining Northumbria University as its next Vice-Chancellor and am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead. Of course, having worked at Nottingham for more than 30 years, I shall miss so many good friends and colleagues, and would like to thank them for supporting me at every stage of my time here.”
Professor Long has studied and worked at the University of Nottingham since 1990. Prior to his appointment as DVC he served as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering from 2015-2018, and before that as Executive Dean (2011-15) and Associate Dean for Research (2008-11). He also served as Associate Dean to the Graduate School representing Engineering (2007-11).
He has a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Warwick, an MSc in Computer Integrated Engineering from Loughborough University, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham. He joined the staff at Nottingham in 1990 as a Research Assistant, and was appointed lecturer in 1994 before gaining promotion to a personal chair in Mechanics of Materials in 2003.
Professor Long is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Throughout his time at Nottingham he has continued to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as conducting research into high performance composite materials.
The university will commence recruitment for Andy’s successor as Deputy Vice-Chancellor shortly, with further details of the process published in Campus News in due course.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.
Together we can forge women’s equality.
Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.” IWD 2022
We invite the entire university to be part of this conversation and show how you are breaking gender stereotypes. Why not share a photo and caption on the 8 March using #BreaktheBias, #WeAreUoN, #IWD_UoN.

We invite the entire university to be part of this conversation and show how you are breaking gender stereotypes. Why not share a photo and caption on the 8 March using #BreaktheBias, #WeAreUoN, #IWD_UoN.
Join us for a panel discussion, chaired by Professor Katherine Linehan (PVC for EDI), where we explore how we can create an inclusive university that supports the health and wellbeing of women on campus.
We invite the entire university to be part of this conversation. Together we can #BreakTheBias.
Our speakers include:
Professor Katherine Linehan
Katherine Linehan joined University of Nottingham as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equality Diversity, Inclusion and People in January 2022. Katherine joined the university from University of Sheffield where she was the deputy EDI lead for the institution as a whole, supporting the work of the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Katherine chaired the institution’s Gender Equality Committee, securing the Silver Athena SWAN award for it in 2018. She also led Sheffield’s response to the UKRI and EPSRC Race Equality Initiative and the diversification of the curriculum across her Faculty.
Katherine is committed to driving EDI at UoN “My ambition is to create a diverse and inclusive staff and student community in which all are given equal opportunity to thrive and showcase their talents. I want to foster an environment in which everyone feels comfortable and valued bringing their authentic self to the university to work or to study.”
Stacy Johnson
I am a Trinidadian immigrant nurse and academic activist. I am an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences and the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of The Reverse Mentoring Practice, a University of Nottingham spin out. I have been thinking deeply about the impact of psychological and moral distress on women’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Daisy Forster
As a third year Liberal Arts student, I’ve struggled with chronic migraines and headaches throughout my degree and understand what it feels like to have a condition be overlooked and misunderstood. I decided to start a Women*s Health Campaign to close the Gender Health Gap at UoN and make women* with health conditions feel that they are taken seriously. Hearing heart-breaking stories from students and staff through this campaign has made me realise how important and serious the issue really is. I’m very excited and honoured to take part in this event!
Claire Thompson
I am the Associate Director (Student Wellbeing) at the university. I am a graduate of the Nottingham School of Psychology and entered the world of social work after I left university, specialising in the area of adult mental health. The social work values of equality and inclusion are very close to my heart and I am delighted to be a part of celebrating International Women’s Day.
30 Minutes for Me – IWD Moves+ Challenge
Why not take part in one (or all!) of our IWD 2022 Moves+ challenges? Through the Moves+ app we are setting a series of challenges that not only get us moving but also celebrate women who are #breakingthebias when it comes to sport.
Physical activity is so important for our health and wellbeing. Not only is it great for our physical health but it also de-stresses and boost mood.
It is important that we take time for ourselves, so this International Women’s Day we are encouraging you all to take ’30 minutes for me’. Go for a walk, run, swim or whatever floats your boat! Just get out there for 30 minutes and feel the benefit. Why not take a walk around the campus? Walking routes can be viewed here.
Our big challenge this year is in celebration of Preet Chandi, the first woman of colour to reach the South Pole. The physio and army captain managed to complete a 700-mile solo expedition to the South Pole in 40 days, seven hours and three minutes – becoming the third fastest female solo skier to ever complete the journey. We are challenging you to walk 8,000 steps a day (total of 56,0000 over the week) and collectively we hope to cover 700miles.
More information on the Moves+ app can be found here.
Remember sport is for everyone!
The university’s Department of Sport offers inclusive initiatives and Empower gives female students the opportunity to keep fit, educate themselves on a healthy lifestyle and become part of a dynamic community.

Gender+ and elections in India’s most populous state
Date: Friday 18 March 2022, 12pm – 1.30pm (UK)/ 5.30-7pm (IST)
Online MS Teams webinar
Registration link to follow
This webinar, organised for International Women’s Day 2022, will explore challenges for women’s political participation in India. India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, home to more than 200 million people, has just concluded its state election in February – March 2022 to elect its state government. It is a politically dynamic state with several major parties. The incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party, also the ruling party of national government, has governed the state from 2017-2022. The 2022 election is particularly noteworthy for the implementation of a 40% gender quota for candidates from one of the parties in the contest, the Indian National Congress party. Results will be declared on 10 March. All three webinar speakers have spent time on the ground during the election campaign and have been closely involved with understanding the challenges faced by diverse women candidates in this election and women’s experiences as voters. We very much look forward to hearing their insights, in terms of the campaign, the results, and broader reflections on the status of women’s political participation in India.
We are grateful to the University of Nottingham’s International Women’s Day programme for co-funding this event, along with UoN’s Asia Research Institute.
Find a list of speaker profiles for this event here.

Members of the university’s research community are encouraged to support Stick to Science, a campaign urging EU leaders and the UK government to agree to the UK’s association with Horizon Europe, the world-leading research and innovation programme.
The UK’s participation in Horizon Europe has stalled due to post-Brexit negotiations, delaying access to the €95.5 billion programme.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West and the University of Nottingham are joining the campaign’s call to put science ahead of politics and remove barriers to innovation across Europe.
Nottingham researchers are invited to sign an online petition calling for the UK’s urgent association to Horizon Europe. Switzerland is also locked out of the programme and the Stick to Science campaign warns that the current political impasse is preventing world-leading scientists from collaborating fully together across Europe.
Professor West is among research leaders and thousands of researchers from the UK and across Europe who have signed the petition, while Nottingham joins institutional signatories including fellow Russell Group universities, the Royal Society, Crick Institute, Academy of Medical Sciences and many of our partners in Europe.
Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “We fully support the Stick to Science campaign and whatever the outcome of negotiations between the UK and EU, we remain committed to developing innovation networks with our partners in Europe.
“Please do consider supporting the Stick to Science campaign– and meanwhile we strongly encourage our researchers to continue to apply to Horizon Europe and maintain our excellent record of engagement.”
The University of Nottingham has already seen more than 100 proposals submitted to Horizon Europe, with two winning collaborative research projects with European partners.
UKRI is guaranteeing funding for the first wave of researchers who have successfully applied to Horizon Europe but are unable to sign grants and access EU funding due to delays to the UK’s association to the programme.
University of Nottingham researchers and our UK partners are encouraged to continue to apply to Horizon Europe, to ensure bids are in progress once agreement on association or its equivalent is reached.
Dame Jessica added: “We will continue to lobby for association with Horizon Europe and stress the importance of fellowships, collaborations and engagement with Europe, while urging our researchers to continue to open up new conversations and be alert to such opportunities.”
Anyone interested in pursuing European funding, wanting more detail on the UKRI guarantee or advice on the various strands of funding available and the support at Nottingham, should contact EU Development Manager Matthew Rackley or their local research development professional.
