Three people from The University of Nottingham have been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch as it passes through the city on its way to London 2012.

Research fellow Dannie Carpenter from the School of Biology was chosen alongside students Taylor Amerman and Chris Hill as part of Samsung’s nomination programme for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

The trio will join the 8,000 inspirational people who will carry the torch — decorated with 8,000 small holes, weighing 800 grams and measuring 800mm high – on its 70 day journey across Britain.

The torch will reach Nottingham on 28 June as it travels within 10 miles of 95% of the UK population. The precession will be met by a free evening celebration on the Old Market Square, before being paraded through the city and the University’s Jubilee campus on Friday 29 June.

After being chosen to take part, Corporate Social Responsibility masters student Taylor Amerman said: “As an international student, I wanted to be able to engage with the local community and make a difference. I have been fortunate enough to have a lot of blessings in my life and I want to give back by inspiring others.

“I was very surprised, excited, honoured and humbled to be selected. I have received other honours in my life, but this was by far the biggest because it was a reflection of my character and values. It is a true honour to be selected as someone who will inspire Britain.”

Chris Hill, a part-time PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, added: “I have always loved the Olympics, but due to ongoing medical problems I have only ever been able to watch them from afar.

“I am delighted to be involved and will always be grateful to the friends who nominated me. They put me forward after being inspired by the amount I have achieved while managing a number of medical issues, having almost completed a PhD and being actively involved in environmental organisation — Project Nottingham.”

University of Nottingham Economics student and Great Britain swimmer, Sam Van De Schootbrugge, will also be carrying the torch as it travels around the UK.
