New electric vehicle charge points on campus

The university is in the process of installing new electric vehicle charge points across our campuses – this includes replacing the existing points at Jubilee campus (opposite Business School South and in the UNIP car park), King’s Meadow campus (short stay staff parking area), University Park (outside the Estate Office) and at Sutton Bonington (in front of Main Building).
During the removal of the existing points and installation of the new points there will be a couple of days when each location will not be available for vehicle charging – we are trying to keep down time to a minimum.
We will also be installing new charge points in the following locations:
- Near the Sports Centre on University Park
- In the main visitor car park at University Park
- In the Medical School car park
- At Sutton Bonington opposite the Brewery Science building
To use the new charge points users will need to download the Mer Connect App and register as a user.

We will be introducing charges to use the EV charge points on campus, but initially you will be able to use them for free providing you have the Mer app.
As with the existing charge points, users will need a valid university parking permit or a Pay and Display ticket, and can charge their vehicle for up to 3 hours between 8am and 4pm.

Can you offer an indication of dates to help us plan our parking?
I live in a different city (!) so it puts me in a tricky situation if I cannot find a point on campus.

Hi Simon. The replacement UNIP EV points were installed last week and are now operational, the new dual point near David Ross on Beeston Lane (opposite the EMCC) is also now in place and operational. The rest of the points have been delayed slightly – we are hoping they will be installed on various days W/C 16th October. Down time will be minimised as much as possible, when possible. Is the Chemistry Stores on UP and the CNL Stores on Jubilee Campus charging points included is this replacement?

Hi Jim. I’m afraid those charging points were installed by the School of Chemistry, not by Estates – so they currently fall outside of the scope of the project. Thanks.

Will the new car chargers be rapid chargers? What is the charging rate? How many miles could you potentially get for the 3 hour charge?

Hi Kirsty. The existing charging points are 3kw, and the new points are a combination of 7kw charges and 7kw loaded balanced (With the load balanced. If two cars are using the dual point at the same time, the 7kw is split between them). The number of miles you could potentially get with a 3 hour charge would vary depending on car make and model. Hello- is there anywhere that details what the new charges for charging EV vehicles will be and also what date this will come into action from?
Once it begins on a payment basis will it still be restricted to 3 hours charging?

Hi Kirsty. The price has not been determined yet but it will be designed to cover the costs of the power and the running costs of the charging point, not to make a profit. The decision of when to introduce chargers has not been made yet – the decision will be made once all new points are installed and we can ensure consistency across campuses and make sure people are familiar with the App. The 3-hour maximum stay policy is being reviewed as part of this.
