University renews membership of primary care research network

April 1st, 2021

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has renewed the University of Nottingham’s membership of the School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), a group of nine leading academic centres carrying out world-leading research in primary care and supporting the development of primary care research.

The fourth phase of the school starts in April, with a £22m award from the NIHR to support primary care research across the network over the next five years.

Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, said: “Our School of Medicine and its collaborators have a reputation for outstanding research in primary care and I am delighted our contribution to strengthening national provision in this critical sector continues to be recognised. We are also committed to developing early career researchers, and an additional £10m award from the NIHR Academy to support capacity building across SPCR is further great news.”

The bid from Nottingham was led by Professor Joe Kai and colleagues in the Divisions of Primary Care, Dermatology and Rehabilitation. The renewal of Nottingham’s membership demonstrates the high quality of research which has been undertaken by the University of Nottingham in the field of Primary Care to date and a commitment to strengthening the primary care research sector more broadly, through collaboration with sectors including dermatology, rehabilitation and public health.

The member institutions share their expertise, with a strong emphasis on engaging, collaborating and partnering with institutions beyond the school membership.

Along with Nottingham, SPCR’s members are the universities of:

  • Queen Mary, London
  • Bristol
  • University College London (UCL)
  • Exeter
  • Keele
  • Manchester
  • Oxford
  • Southampton
