The everyday auditory world is a complicated place, sounds from every source around blend with acoustic reflections from every object or surface around.

Location is key to knowing what is out there and reacting accordingly. Its easier to hear a sound in a background if they are in different locations, while reflections are generally suppressed, and you might ignore a sound that was a long way away but concentrate hard on it if it was immediately behind.

This lecture will introduce the science of how we determine the direction and distance of sounds, how these interact with how we move or what we see, and what hearing aids do to them.
