Roadworks have commenced on the third junction of the Ring Road Improvement Scheme – Crown Island, the junction of Middleton Boulevard, Wollaton Road and Western Boulevard.
From now until spring 2016, construction works will take place to create additional circulating lanes to improve through-traffic, reduce traffic queues on all approaches and upgrade crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
The junction will be built in phases with carefully planned traffic management measures so that all traffic movements around the junction can be maintained for the duration of the works. However some delays and impact on travel times are expected. Traffic will be managed around the site by lane restrictions, generally timed to be off-peak and at weekends using temporary traffic signals and crossing points.
Works at Crown Island started in September 2014 to build a new retaining wall adjacent to The University of Nottingham Melton Hall site and extend the subway under Crown Island to support the new road layout. The works have affected the Jubilee Campus car park. An estimated 48 spaces have been lost, of which 18 will reopen once the works are complete. The subway is closed while works take place. Pedestrians are advised to use nearby crossings and cyclists should follow the diversion route via the surface crossings on Wollaton Road and Middleton Boulevard.
