The third Sutton Bonington science cake competition was held on the Thursday 12 March in aid of Comic Relief, with entries in six different categories (Veterinary Medicine, Animal & Agriculture, From Farm to Fork, Infection, Cakes for Animals, Comic Relief).
Fantastic cakes ranging from ringworm in cats, nesting chickens, sows with piglets to beautiful vegetables and gardens prepared by very creative students and staff, were submitted and expertly evaluated by 9 judges including members from both schools of Bioscience and Veterinary Medicine, Una Lilley from the student union, Emily Eudall from Onswitch Ltd. and James Lydon from Buffalo Brownies. The Old Kingston Alumni Association (OKA) and the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science kindly sponsored rosettes and prizes. We also saw the return of an enthusiastic canine judging panel for the ‘Cakes for animal’ category. The outright winner of its category, but also the overall and public vote winner was the thought-provoking ‘Rhinos Should Be Horny!’ cake by Harry Pink and Meg Coram, both students on the preliminary veterinary degree course. The judges loved the attention to detail, the impact and the great taste.
The Cake Off also made it onto national TV. Comic Relief loved the photos from our last two bake off competitions and asked for one of our bakers to design a cake for the special Comic Relief episode of The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice, which was recorded in London on Sunday 8 February. Rachael Lowton (Year 4) and Jennie Stoddart (Year 3), public vote winners from last year, accepted the challenge and sticking with the Comic Relief theme ‘make your face funny for money’, they prepared ‘Just your Everage cake’ in homage to Dame Edna, who was one of the Comic Relief Bake Off contestants. They featured on the show, screened on BBC2 on Friday 13 March with Rachel highlighting our SB Cake Off for Comic Relief.

Researchers funded by the ESRC are being invited to sign up for free media training taking place on University Park on Thursday 14 May.
The workshop is open to researchers at all stages of their career, providing their work has produced some findings which are suitable for discussion and could form the basis for practical interview mock ups.
Members of the University’s Media Relations team will also be on hand to discuss how they can support researchers in putting their new media skills to good use to promote and publicise their research and expertise.
Places are limited and likely to be booked up quickly, so researchers interested in taking part are advised to sign up online as soon as possible or contact Emma Thorne, Media Relations Manager on 0115 951 5793, for further information.

The new Line Three tram has been tested overnight for the first time, as the line nears completion.
The test saw the tram run over the Ningbo Friendship Bridge for the first time on the night of Wednesday 11 March, and marks significant progress in construction. Initial trials between the NG2 Business Park and University Boulevard have been hailed a success, and daytime runs are expected to follow shortly.
Councillor Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transportation at Nottingham City Council, said: “There have been many milestones in this huge undertaking to extend the city’s tram network, but the first overnight tram to test the route as far as the Queen’s Medical Centre is a truly significant moment.
“This is the first modern tram network in the UK to serve a major hospital, and when passenger services begin they will truly transform how patients, staff and visitors can reach the biggest hospital in the region, with services running every 7.5 minutes, 364 days a year. They will be able to ride the tram to the hospital direct from stops along the entire extended tram network, or from the tram interchange at Nottingham Station, or from seven NET park and ride sites.
“Students at The University of Nottingham will benefit greatly, and these tests also mark the first tram crossing over the Ningbo Friendship Bridge, symbolising the city’s increasing educational, commercial and research links with China. The bridge is also one of the biggest engineering feats and one of the most iconic structures of the entire project.”
The tram is expected to open for the public in summer 2015. For more information about the tests, visit the Nottingham City Council website, and for details of how the tram will affect the University, visit our tram works page.
