The National Student Survey launched for final year undergraduates on Monday 1 February 2016. As of 1pm on Monday 8 February, completion rate stood at 13.3%. The top five responding departments (in terms of response rate) are as follows:
| Department | Response rate (%) |
| Architecture | 54.2 |
| Contemporary Chinese Studies | 43.2 |
| Veterinary Medicine & Science | 39.6 |
| Chemical & Environmental Engineering | 27.3 |
| Physics | 22.7 |
Promoting the survey
All staff are asked to actively promote the NSS to final year student. As well as active promotion by University staff, lecture shout-outs by fellow students are commonly cited by students as one of the key reasons that they complete the survey.
Arranging lecture shout-outs for your students
The Students’ Union is offering training for student representatives to deliver lecture shout-outs, encouraging their peers to complete the survey.
If you would like your course or school representatives to carry out lecture shout-outs, you should first liaise directly with them. Training will be offered to directly to student reps in mid-February but the Students’ Union will not be coordinating lecture shout-out directly with Schools/student reps.
During the training, student representatives will be encouraged to coordinate with staff to agree a schedule of lecture shout-outs. If you would like to arrange lecture shout-outs, please coordinate with your student representatives.
Visit our NSS page on the Current Students section of the website for more background information about the survey.

Libraries, Research and Learning Resources have launched a new mediated deposit service, making it quicker and easier for researchers to store their publications in our ePrints repository.
Following the implementation of HEFCE requirements on 1 April, researchers will need to have their articles available through Open Access within three months of acceptance to be eligible for the next REF.
The new mediated deposit service will enable researchers to deposit their publications by email. As well as making the process simple for academics, this will improve the efficiency of compliance and reporting procedures.
For more information, visit www.nottingham.ac.uk/openaccess

The University has announced plans to introduce a number of new and improved student service centres, increasing access to key services for students across all UK campuses.
From 1 August 2016, there will be a total of five local service centres; two at University Park, one at QMC, one at Jubilee Campus and one at Sutton Bonington Campus. The Derby Course and Student Centre at Royal Derby Hospital will also remain in place.
The new developments form just part of the University’s core strategy to provide excellence in education and student life and follow the recent introduction of a new model for student service delivery headed up by Breda Walls, Chief Student Management Officer.
A large part of this reorganisation is aimed at providing a consistently high service to all students across the University, no matter where they are.
Breda said, “The new service centres will mean that students have easier access to many services wherever they are, combining a wide range of support that has previously been scattered across our campuses. Any student can use any centre.”
MyNottingham – a new online system
As well as increasing access and consistency of service across all campuses, a new online system is also due for launch – providing access to a range of student services online from any device, at any time. MyNottingham will be a personalised online system tailored to the individual student experience and providing access to module information, fees and finances, academic results, a range of student support and more. More details about MyNottingham will be available soon.
Construction of the new facilities will start in February 2016 and they will be completed in time for opening on 1 August 2016. To minimise any disruption, the current Student Service Centres will remain open and fully operational until that date.
Find out more
The new service centres and MyNottingham are being delivered as part of Project Transform, a wider project to improve the entire student journey at The University of Nottingham. For more information about Project Transform please visit the Project webpage.

Do you get frustrated about the use of evidence in government policy making? Do you want to increase the policy impact of your research?
Take part in the Royal Society pairing scheme – applications for scientists are now open until Wednesday 9 March.
Each year the Royal Society’s pairing scheme pairs 30 research scientists with UK parliamentarians and civil servants. By spending time together in Westminster and the researcher’s labs, participants learn about each other’s work and gain a greater insight into how research findings can help inform policy making. If you take part in the scheme you will have a chance to learn how parliament and government work and how you can feed in to the policy making process.
The scheme begins with a ‘Week in Westminster’ in which you will meet your pair. Over the week you will spend two days shadowing them, and also take part in workshops and hear from invited speakers. After the ‘Week in Westminster’ your pair will visit you in your lab to get an insight into the world of research.
For more information about the scheme and to apply please visit the Royal Society website or contact Rachael Mann at rachael.mann@royalsociety.org or 02074512218.
For an insight into what the scheme entails, you can also read a blog about Nottingham academic Rebecca Dewey’s experiences in 2015.

From February 2016, the University is changing the way staff and students access Wi-Fi.
Instead of using UoN-Secure, you should now connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi. It’s easy to set up:
Eduroam is available on all University of Nottingham campuses, and is also used by many universities across the globe. If you are visiting another university where eduroam is available, you can also connect there using the same details.
If you have any trouble accessing eduroam, contact the IT Service desk by email (itservicedesk@nottingham.ac.uk) or the self service portal or by phone on 0115 95 16677. Alternatively, visit the Smart Bar in Hallward library.
