Sarah Stephenson-Hunter, Disability Advisor at the University of Nottingham, has been awarded Stonewall’s East Midlands Role Model of the Year.
Stonewall campaigns for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people across Britain.
Sarah has given a number of talks across Nottinghamshire about her experiences of being trans. These include her delivery of a keynote address at the 2016 and 2017 Nottingham Partnership Conference to people working across Nottinghamshire.
As part of LGBT History Month 2017 she visited Vision West Nottinghamshire College and gave a talk to two groups of students on being an intersectional role model.
More recently in April 2018, Sarah spoke at the annual Stonewall European Workplace Conference as part of a keynote panel discussion on trans inclusion in the workplace.
Alongside her speaking, Sarah is a Community Role Model for Nottinghamshire Police, an active member of the University of Nottingham’s Trans Working Party and a member of the steering group and trustee for Notts Trans Hub and Trans Space Notts.
In October 2017 Sarah also raised around £500 for Stonewall by running the Royal Park Half Marathon, an achievement which featured in the summer 2017 Stonewall Friends Magazine.
Sarah said: ‘I’m really honoured to have received this award which recognises the work I’ve done to raise awareness of what it means to be trans and disabled. For me being a role model is an active choice I’ve made to be open and transparent about the challenges faced by LGBT people in the workplace and society as a whole. I’ve been really fortunate to receive excellent support throughout my transition from the University of Nottingham and if winning this award means I can show others that being trans and/or disabled shouldn’t be a barrier to living as full a life as is possible, then that’s fantastic.”
Louise Knott, Vice Principle for Communication, Engagement and Student Experience at Vision West Nottinghamshire College said: “Sarah is one of the most inspirational speakers that the college has had. Students hung off her every word. Not only is Sarah’s personal journey remarkable, the lessons that students took from it have enabled some of them to come to terms with their own identity and disabilities. It is unusual in a group of 16 year olds to be able to hear a pin drop but that is exactly what happened when Sarah visited.”
Sarah concluded: “Things have come a long way in terms of trans awareness but there’s still a lot to be done and I’m fully committed to doing whatever I can to bring about true equality in this area.”

Our next undergraduate open days will take place on Friday 29 June and Saturday 30 June, across all three UK campuses. Are you able to help out?
Thanks to everyone who has been able to volunteer so far to help out at the forthcoming open days. Our staff and student ambassadors are central to the success of the days and from feedback we know that they make a positive difference to our visitors’ experiences.

Are you able to help out? Duties will include:
Please seek your line manager’s permission before signing up and complete the online form by Friday 15 June.
When completing the form, please keep a note of which briefing you sign up to attend, as there are versions for those who have worked an open day before and those who have not.
You will also be asked to attend a staff training session (45 minutes max) and a final briefing the week prior to the Open Day (1 hour max). These are obligatory for all staff, whether you have helped on open days before or not, as arrangements change from year to year. A truly rounded university experience has been credited for the University of Nottingham consolidating its position among the top 100 universities in the world.
According to the 2019 QS World University Rankings the University of Nottingham has climbed two places to be ranked 82nd in the world and is 15th out of just 76 UK universities included in the table.
The University of Nottingham’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West, said: “Nottingham has continued to demonstrate excellence in both teaching and research and we are proud of our reputation for being one of the best universities in the country for graduate employability.
“The talent and commitment of our staff underpins this latest ranking – whether this be academic staff being cited on papers, careers teams inspiring the next generation of researchers or those improving the way in which our students live and learn.
“Our world-leading, globally connected university, continues to attract a high calibre of staff and students from around the world. I have no doubt that we offer a truly rounded university experience and this ranking is further evidence of that.”
The most recent rankings particularly emphasise Nottingham’s employer reputation which is ranked among the top 100 in the world. The University is consistently named as one of the most targeted institutions by leading graduate employers and was also named as University of the Year for Graduate Employment in the 2017 Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide
The University’s academic reputation, citations per faculty and international faculty ratio were metrics which had all improved and also accounted for the strong positioning.
Ben Sowter, Research Director at QS, said: “This year’s ranking cycle has demonstrated the enduring excellence of the United Kingdom higher education sector in the face of relentlessly competitive competition from abroad. Global research output is increasing apace, with the average institution producing 12.1% more publications and yielding 22.2% more citations than in the previous window. Keeping pace is one thing, but staying ahead of the curve is a testament to the innovation, insight, capacity for collaboration, and thought-leadership present at UK universities.”
The QS World University Rankings have been published since 2004, taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student to faculty ratio, international faculty and international student numbers.
