A lecture by Dr Alvaro Garcia.

More than 80% of the world’s freight transport is carried out by road and billions are spent every year on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of roads with the sole objective of ensuring that economies are able to grow. Moreover, the poor quality of roads causes high levels of noise, air pollution, traffic delays, accidents and low vehicle energy-efficiency.

This talk will introduce novel technologies that (i) reduce the energy required to build roads; (ii) increase the lifetime of roads and minimise or completely eliminate maintenance; (iii) manage traffic and easily adapt to new transportation technologies (eg autonomous vehicles) and (iv) allow roads to remain operational under catastrophic events such as heavy snow, rain or oil spillages. These technologies will represent a solution suitable for all types of road, whether urban, rural or motorway, and apply to the renewal of existing roads as well as to new road construction.
