Blue Stockings

Nottingham Lakeside Arts are delighted to be collaborating once again with The Nottingham New Theatre to co-produce Blue Stockings — a play by Jessica Swale with a full student cast.

It is 1896 and Tess has begun her education at Girton College, Cambridge – home to the country’s first female students. Despite matching their male peers grade for grade, Tess and her fellow students are unable to graduate. Instead they are stigmatised as ‘bluestockings’ — unnatural, educated women who dare to change the history of education.

Blue Stockings follows the women over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight for the right to graduate.

Nottingham Lakeside Arts’ partnership with The Nottingham New Theatre is now in its fifth year following successful productions of Lysistrata, Dr Faustus, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Oedipus. The collaboration provides the opportunity for students to work with a professional director and creative team to produce high-quality theatre on campus, ensuring our continued commitment to professional development at the university.
