Thanks Shearer, your reflections give the hope that under your leadership the University will regain a focus on the long term future rather than follow every fad, such as pretending to be a business. I hope our new Global Strategy will acknowledge that while there are themes that we think we can see developing, the future is inherently unpredictable, and the best strategy is to have a diverse set of approaches. It is key not to support novel ideas because they don’t fit in a pre-conceived mould and to avoid doing the exact same thing as every other University is doing. The greatest winners in any future are the ones who just happened to have the right idea and were in the place where they could make it happen. Let’s hope that place will be our University!
