Reverse mentoring Train the Trainer Programme: call for participants

April 23rd, 2024

The university is looking for members of staff from all job families who are interested in being trained to help support the roll out and delivery of our three-year reverse mentoring ‘Train the Trainer’ programme.

What is reverse mentoring?

Typically, reverse mentoring is when a senior member of staff is mentored by a more junior member of staff. Reverse mentoring provides an opportunity, irrespective of seniority, for staff to learn from each other by sharing knowledge and experiences.

This helps to bridge generational and hierarchical gaps, improve communication and understanding. We believe our staff should have an opportunity to challenge our leaders on how they lead and share with them how their experience of university life may be different.

What is reverse mentoring for equality, diversity and inclusion (ReMEDI)?

The ReMEDI approach, developed by Stacy Johnson MBE, Associate Professor, School of Health Sciences in 2017, adapts traditional intergenerational reverse mentoring to enhance cultural humility of leaders and organisational influencers, for the purpose of improving equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

Leaders are mentored by more junior staff who identify as belonging to groups underrepresented at universities and in university leadership.

This short animation provides an overview of the ReMEDI approach.

Who can participate?

We are looking for members of staff across the university, from all job families, who are interested in being trained to help support the roll out and delivery of the university’s three-year reverse mentoring train the trainer programme.

We are looking for members of staff who are interested in:

  • helping us to build internal capability to deliver the reverse mentoring programme and embed it across the university
  • developing their training skills

We also welcome expressions of interest from staff who are members of our staff networks and those who have participated in reverse mentoring previously, as part of the EPSRC-funded STEMM-CHANGE project.

What are the expected outcomes?

By the end of the three-day train the trainer course, our trained staff will have:

  • an understanding of the purpose of reverse mentoring for equality, diversity and inclusion and the ReMEDI Approach
  • gained insight into using the ReMEDI Framework to deliver the reverse mentoring programme collaboratively
  • the ability to train reverse mentors and prepare reverse mentees going forward, as part of the roll out of the university’s three-year reverse mentoring programme

What commitment is required?

  • attendance for all three days of the reverse mentoring train the trainer course
  • training reverse mentors and preparing reverse mentees during the university’s reverse mentoring programme
