Colleagues can now access Tableau Server without using VPN

March 15th, 2022

During December, PPSC worked with DTS to enable access to Tableau Server beyond the university’s network, while maintaining the security of the data it provides. Staff can now access the university’s Tableau Server without needing to use the VPN or a remote desktop client or needing to be physically on a UoN campus.

The URL is unchanged and is the same wherever you are accessing it from: https://analytics.nottingham.ac.uk

Many thanks to DTS colleagues for enabling this to happen.

Tableau Server access via IOS and Android apps

As well as being able to use a web browser for access, it is also now possible to use either the IOS or Android Tableau app on phones or tablets. By default, the app will display each dashboard in a mobile-friendly view. If you wish to see the original desktop view you can select ‘Desktop Layout’ from the menu within the app. Over time select dashboards may be redesigned to optimise the mobile view.

To download the IOS app go to the App Store on your device or go here.

To download the Android app go to the Play Store on your device or go here.

Tableau Server Microsoft authentication

Signing in to Tableau Server now occurs through Microsoft authentication. This is the same authentication mechanism as you now use to access Office 365. When you go to the URL you may be taken to the UoN sign-in page to add your username and password. This authenticates you with the university.

Tableau Server upgrade

Tableau Server has been upgraded to version 2021.2. While this upgrade does not change the experience of using Tableau Server for most users, it will allow us to take advantage of some new features. Key among these is a feature which will help us to curate the currently available content, helping end users find the information they are interested in more easily.
