Vice-Chancellor honoured with Festschrift

June 23rd, 2015

Professor Sir David Greenaway, Vice-Chancellor at The University of Nottingham, is to be honoured with a Festschrift celebrating his work in the field of economics.

A special edition of Review of International Economics will celebrate Sir David’s contribution to research in international economics, and will be accompanied by a conference on Thursday 25 June in honour of his work.

A tribute from internationally renowned economists

The Festschrift features contributions from internationally renowned economists with close links to Sir David, from former research students to Internal and External Fellows of the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP), of which Sir David was Founding Director.

Professor Peter Egger, Professor of Applied Economics, ETH Zurich and co-organiser of the Festschrift, said: “Professor Sir David Greenaway has contributed in a major way to economics in general and specifically to the field of international economics through a sizable number of research articles. He is particularly known for his contributions to explaining cross-border trade within sectors, trade within firms, the effects of using trade-policy instruments such as tariffs, the benefits of exporting and foreign direct investment, to mention but a few areas of expertise.”

Sir David said: “As an academic, being the focus of a Festschrift is a very great honour and I would like to express my gratitude to all who have put time and effort into this edition of the journal. I am looking forward to the opportunity to hear my colleagues speak on a range of fascinating topics at the conference, and am proud the GEP and our School of Economics have worked with such a range of esteemed economists on an international scale.”

Contributors include Professor Egger, Professor Giovanni Facchini, Director of GEP, Professor Chris Milner, co-organiser and Professor of International Economics, University of Nottingham, Professor Carl Davidson, Michigan State University Professor Ray Riezman, University of Iowa and Dr Joana Silva, The World Bank. For a full list of contributors and a programme, visit the GEP website.

A prolific career in higher education and public service

Sir David was appointed to the University as a Professor of Economics in 1987 and served a Pro-Vice-Chancellor for both Research and Infrastructure before his appointment as Vice-Chancellor in 2008. He was a member of the government’s Asia Task Force 2004-2014, and a member of its Higher Education Task Force. He is Chair elect of the Russell Group of Universities, Chair of CASE Europe and Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. He has also acted as a consultant to The World Bank, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Commission, the United Nations, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, and HM Treasury. Sir David received a knighthood in recognition of his wide-ranging achievements in higher education and public service in Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2014.

As an academic, Sir David continues to lecture on ‘Current Economic Issues’ to first-year undergraduates in the School of Economics. He is the editor of The World Economy and continues to publish research widely in the fields of exporting and productivity, cross-border investment, international trade and economic development.

Professor Egger added: “Beyond his great success in publishing, Sir David was enormously influential and successful in building The University of Nottingham’s School of Economics, and in mentoring colleagues – in particular, young scholars – within and outside the school. The Festschrift is meant to thank the dignitary for all he has done for us, the participants at the conference and many others, over the years.”

To coincide with the Festschrift, a conference will be held in honour of Sir David from 9am on Thursday 25 June at Highfield House, University Park. Those interested in attending should email hilary.hughes@nottingham.ac.uk. For more information and a programme, visit nott.ac.uk/festschrift2015
