The University of Nottingham is committed to embedding a culture of research integrity and good research practice across the university.

To support this, our Research Ethics and Integrity pages have been refreshed, with new resources aimed at research ethics committees in schools, departments and faculties.

These now include a dedicated Code of Practice for Research Ethics Committees for projects involving human participants. The university’s Research Integrity and Research Ethics Committee has also produced guidance on ethics for research projects involving animals.

Professor Gowland, chair of the University Research Integrity and Research Ethics Committee, said “I am delighted that we now have an aligned approach for Research Ethics Review processes across the University of Nottingham to strengthen our research integrity and ethics infrastructure.”

“I am grateful to the UK Research Integrity Office, research ethics committee members and all support teams who contributed to the development of this code.”

It is expected that all University of Nottingham Research Ethics Committees will follow these guidelines.

Professor Dame Jessica Corner, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange said: “All staff and students will also find these codes and guidance will benefit them immensely in planning research projects and by providing a clear understanding of the review criteria used to assess research projects.”

The code was written to allow discipline-appropriate procedures to be implemented where appropriate. Research Ethics Committees should continue to be independent in forming their opinions, and these guidelines are designed to ensure alignment of process and governance.

The code applies to all University of Nottingham campuses, with exceptions for China and Malaysia campuses to be managed locally.
