Student-led NOOC looks to the digital future

April 20th, 2018

A new Nottingham Open Online Course (NOOC), exploring the way in which emerging technologies are changing work, education and politics has been launched by two members of the University of Nottingham student community.

The NOOC, titled ‘A student’s guide to the future’, is aimed at anyone and everyone at the University who is interested in debating the future of the University, engaging in politics and civil society, and how they will work when they are a graduate.

Delivered online via communication platform Aula, the free course uses digital tools to take a critical look at how technology is rapidly changing the way students learn, participate in civil society, and will work in the future.

It explores how emerging technologies are changing what it is to be a student, focusing on topics such as:

  • Digital mediation and the brain
  • The crowd and the corporation
  • Marketisation and consumerism in HE
  • The ethics of big data
  • Student activism
  • Public participation on social media
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Automation in the labour market
  • Work and the human condition

This NOOC has been developed entirely by current and recently graduated students of the University of Nottingham. In essence, it’s for students by students.

Any current student studying at the University of Nottingham in the UK, China or Malaysia can take part in the course – which launches on Monday 23 April. The NOOC will remain open until the end of term and students there’s no obligation to complete it. However, students who wish to get the most out of the course should sign up as soon as possible.
