Electric superbikes developed by staff and students at the University of Nottingham have achieved strong results at the 2017 Isle of Man TT race – with one of the bikes gaining a podium finish.

The racing team was awarded with third and fifth place in the event, with the fastest of the two bikes achieving an average lap speed of 109 miles per hour during the race.

In addition, the team was awarded with the Best Team and the Best University Awards for the whole TT — plus, one of the University of Nottingham’s riders, Daley Mathison, won the Best Privateer Award.

The two superbikes entered in this year’s race were painstakingly developed and readied by a team that includes PhD and undergraduate students from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering.

The University of Nottingham’s E-racing team was established in 2014 by Professor Pat Wheeler, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. It is now led by Dr Miquel Gimeno-Fabra, assistant Professor in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
