The University of Nottingham is creating a new Office of Global Engagement that will build upon the University’s worldwide reputation for excellence in internationalisation, and enable Nottingham to remain at the forefront of global higher education and research. It will draw on skills and expertise from the International Office, the Asia Business Centre, the regional APVCs and global public policy.
Reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, Professor Nick Miles OBE, the new Office will provide strategic direction, support and co-ordination to help the University maximise opportunities across the full spectrum of its global engagement activity. The primary function of the Office will be to lead on, and support the development of strategic international collaborations; multi-dimensional partnerships combining research, teaching, knowledge exchange and student mobility. The Office will identify and promote new opportunities for staff and students to develop their international experience and exposure.
John Quirk, the current Director of the International Office, will oversee the formation of the Office ensuring delivery of the refreshed global engagement strategy.
With the creation of the Office of Global Engagement, overall responsibility for international student recruitment will transfer to the External Relations Department, led by Kerry Law, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. This will bring into one place all student recruitment and admissions activity, creating a one-stop-shop to enhance the support that can be provided to Faculties and Schools in the delivery of ambitious student number targets in the current globally competitive environment.
The launch of the new Office of Global Engagement aligns with changes to the External Relations Department. External Relations will now have four divisions: Communications and Advocacy, Digital and Marketing, Student Recruitment and Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Three new posts will be appointed to strengthen the leadership team, including a Director of Communications and Advocacy who will have a dotted reporting line into the PVC Global Engagement.
Professor Nick Miles said: “The new Office of Global Engagement will transform our ability to project the University of Nottingham on the world stage. Working together with colleagues from across the institution including in Malaysia and China, it will allow us to build the University’s reputation and relationships in ways that will provide real tangible benefits to staff, students and to the institution as a whole.”
The Office of Global Engagement will start work on Saturday 1 April 2017. Transitional arrangements are being put in place to ensure delivery of the full range of international marketing and recruitment activity that is already planned for the remainder of this academic year.
