Supporting young people with Autism: Research into practice

To mark World Autism Awareness Week, the School of Education is hosting a free seminar to highlight findings from cutting edge research in the field of autism.

People with autism frequently face challenges in education and social situations, which need to be understood and supported.

Speakers

Dr Debra Costley, Associate Professor in the School of Education, will be speaking about research with adolescents, having recently joined the University as an international expert in autism education from Australia.

Debra has over thirty years experience in education, particularly special education, in the UK, Australia and the USA. She has worked in special schools, further and higher education in Australia and the UK and most recently was National Director, Aspect Practice for Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect). This involved managing multiple research and evaluation projects and using outcomes in conjunction with evidence informed practice to develop consultancies and workshops for a range of organizations in the Asia Pacific region.

Other speakers, including Danielle Ropar, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Science, will present findings which impact on the education and relationships of young people.

Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion where the audience is invited to contribute.

This event is free but please register online. Refreshments available from 4pm, presentations commence at 4.30pm.

Please email Dr Anne Emerson if you have any questions.
